Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)

GMC Terrain sales during the third quarter of 2023 place the Professional Grade brand’s compact crossover in 11th place among 16 entries in the mainstream compact crossover segment when ranked by sales volume. The Honda CR-V unseated the Toyota RAV4 for the first time in two years to take the top spot as sales jumped 59 percent to 98,654 units. Curiously, the same scenario took place this quarter in the midsize mainstream sedan segment, where the Chevy Malibu competes against the Accord and Camry. In that space, however, Honda took the mantle away from Toyota for the first time in more than a decade. Back to the Terrain’s pecking order: the Toyota RAV4 placed second with an eight percent uptick to 75,919 units, while the Nissan Rogue followed in third with a 49 percent bump to 63,346 units, and the Hyundai Tucson placed fourth with a 27 percent increase to 52,589 units. The Chevy Equinox (see running Chevy Equinox sales), the Terrain’s corporate cousin and D2 platform mate, took fifth with a four percent spurt to 48,291 units. The GMC Terrain (see running GMC Terrain sales), placed 11th with a five percent dip to 17,003 units.

The GM Authority Take

We continue to attribute the poor performance of GMC Terrain sales to ongoing supply issues. Big Red’s compact crossover remains in demand but its sales volume is being stifled by supply issues stemming from producing the model and also getting enough units shipped from Mexico.

About GMC Terrain

The 2024 GMC Terrain arrives as the seventh model year of the second-generation compact crossover. It receives minimal changes, specifically losing two exterior paint colors.

The 2025 GMC Terrain is on the way as a new, next-generation model, arriving next year. Here’s what we know and expect regarding the 2025 Terrain.

A new Terrain on the horizon is good news since just a couple of weeks ago a redesigned 2025 Subaru Forester debuted as and Chevy Equinox and GMC Terrain rival.

Also of note is that GMC continues mulling a subcompact crossover below Terrain.

While future sales will certainly depend on the next-gen Terrain, GM’s biggest challenge is whether the automaker can build enough units of its current entry-level crossover to meet demand.

  1. Lately, I’m seeing more of these on the roads than Equinoxes. Living in a retiree-infused area, I’m thinking that folks go to the Buick dealer and get this instead of the Envision. But I shake my head every time. How do they see out of the rear? I’d NEVER. Incentives could be higher than the tiny ones at local Chevy dealers (you have to drive 150 miles to find big ones on Chevys).

  2. was commented that if terrain and equinox sales combined ,they hold 3rd spot but that doesn’t count fords escape and bronco sport combined 71+ sales, also gm entries are showing age, ready for redo, interiors need it

  3. It’s outpacing the Cherokee? That’s great news. Good to know it’s selling better than a vehicle that hasn’t been produced since February.

  4. One of the Terrains main issues is the lack of a performance engine. While the Equinox offers the 2.0T the Terrain is stuck with the 1.5T engine only. I am sure there is some strategic purpose (EPA/CARB Ratings…) for pulling the 2.0 a few years ago out of the Terrain, along with the diesel engine, but a lot of shoppers prefer the power of the 2.0 especially in the “Premium Brand” space. The Terrain is literally the least “Premium” of all the GMC lineup right now and has been for years. The new Acadia seems very promising but the Terrain has felt mediocre for a while.

  5. It’s 11th of 16 in its segment, but nice optimistic title for the article.

  6. 3d, the 2.0L has been discontinued since 2021 in both vehicles. So it does not matter what trim level you get, and what price you pay, you get the same engine. Equinox 1LS same powertrain than Terrain Denali.
