Chevy again commanded over half of total GM full-size SUV sales in the United States at 55 percent during Q1 2024. But buyers often cross-shop unibody crossovers, with some models being close to the size of their body-on-frame cousins, as is the case for the Chevy Traverse midsize crossover and Tahoe full-size SUV.
Looking at combined GM utility vehicle sales, including body-on-frame SUVs and unibody crossovers sold by Chevy, Buick, GMC, and Cadillac, has Chevy still commanding more than half of all sales, at 60 percent, with Chevy crossovers alone accounting for half of the total, at 50 percent.

While GM full-size SUV sales fell 14 percent to 60,156 units during Q1 2024, overall GM utility sales were nearly flat for 313,330 deliveries. Utility sales fared better than SUV sales, though the latter accounted for nearly a fifth of all utility deliveries, at 19 percent.
Consequently, GM earns a substantial portion of its revenue and resulting profit from full-size SUV sales, which are crucial to the automaker’s financial health. In fact, it’s often believed that these full-size models are The General’s most profitable products on a per-unit basis, even more profitable than full-size trucks with which they share the T1 platform.

Comments
If the current buyer sentiment holds for Q2 towards lower-priced vehicles, they will be down that much or more again.
Better ready the Lifeboats….
Life boats were the first thing the GM masterminds cut! Only golden parachutes left!
Bubble is bursting with high interest rates & many buyers now out of this $65 to $110k or so large SUV market. Same issues with over priced large pickup market. Where will gm get profits to throw away on EV & self driving programs?
Well at least they have a portfolio of affordable sedans to fall back on…..
I’m sure we can make up for this dip with some Bright Drops and a few Blazer EV’s and Equitynoxes……
Maybe Cruise will work out?
Have they tied sticking a 1.5 turbo and CVT in the Tahoe to spike up some sales?
Buckle up…it’s only going to get worse. And from my point of view..all manufacturers/dealers deserve this recession going to hit by the way they have been price hiking these vehicles the past 3 years.
With this kind of total market share, over 50%, GM has nothing to worry about, despite what you’ve read. One quarter is not a trend.
Lifter and valve failures on brand new vehicles have finally destroyed the demand for GM 8 cylinder products, too many customers having to use the lemon law after paying outrageous prices. GM should attend a kaizen event or take reliability engineering classes from Toyota.
You haven’t been following the many issues with new Toyota/ Lexus products such as the Tundra?
Driveline issues, motors that are seizing. Dealers are refusing to take these vehicles back on trade.
GM out of Touch,Compared to last two generations of Tahoe Suburban buyers. This current generation is to tall unappealing to women buyers who don’t wanna feel like they are going to the Big foot competition. As a Man I just hang on to my older Tahoe and she will still take it to Super Market.GM was on Top in the year 2000 now at the bottom of hill in 2024 too bad.So many other choices……Back to the drawing board.
