For the sake of presenting a more complete picture of the competitive landscape, we’re providing sales figures for the Lexus RX below. Though the RX slots into the luxury utility D-segment, competing with the Cadillac XT5, the last generation of the RX was offered as the two-row RL and three-row RX L. The Lexus RX L was discontinued after the 2022 model year, as it will be replaced by a new model, the 2024 Lexus TX, which is set to rival the XT6 and Enclave while the redesigned 2023 Lexus RX will compete directly with the XT5.

Since Lexus does not break out sales of the RX and the RX L, not all RX sales can be applied to the premium three-row CUV segment. A more appropriate comparison would be to bundle Cadillac XT5 and XT6 sales. We’ve also included the Lincoln Nautilus and Aviator, which are direct rivals to the XT5 and XT6, respectively. We also added the GX to join the RX in this list.

Combining sales of the Cadillac XT5 and XT6 tallies up 12,047 deliveries, while cumulative sales of the Lexus RX and GX results in 32,317 units. As we noted at the beginning of the year, Cadillac continues to lag behind Lexus in terms of sales in this segment for several reasons.

On a related note, many thought the Lincoln Aviator would obliterate Cadillac XT6, but in reality the two are evenly matched, trading sales positions nearly every other quarter. In fact, combined sales of the Lincoln Aviator and Nautilus equated to 10,741 deliveries, outsold by the two Cadillac crossovers in this list.

Not counting the Lexus RX or RX L, the luxury E-utility segment grew 13 percent to 106,831 units in Q1 2023, meaning XT6 sales outperformed the segment average.

The GM Authority Take

Cadillac XT6 sales performance was respectable during Q1 2023 on improved availability of the vehicle at the dealer level. Overall, Cadillac‘s new-vehicle inventory stood at just under 60 days supply in February, slightly down from just above 60 days supply in January following more than 60 days supply in December and a high of about 65 days supply in November. A 60-day supply is considered optimal in the U.S. auto industry by many automotive sales organizations such as the National Automotive Dealers Association (NADA). For reference, a 60-day inventory level means that dealerships have enough inventory on hand to sustain current sales volume for roughly the next 60 days.

XT6 rivals are not standing still. For instance, Lexus recently revealed the all-new TX to compete with the XT6 head-on, while the QX60 recently went through generational changeover, which explains its sales bump this quarter, though not as dramatic as the last two quarters. Additionally, the Lincoln Aviator will receive a midcycle update for the 2024 model year while the Range Rover Sport recently saw a complete overhaul, and its decreased volume during the quarter was the result of sub-par availability of the new model. Meanwhile, longtime segment stalwarts like the Audi Q7 and Volvo XC90 continue to perform well.

If Cadillac intends on competing favorably in this space, it will need to improve the XT6.

About Cadillac XT6

The 2020 Cadillac XT6 was the first model year for the all-new, three-row luxury midsize crossover utility vehicle (CUV) from the automaker. Two years later, the 2022 Cadillac XT6 offered Super Cruise for the first time. The 2022 XT6 also features more standard advanced safety features along with several other changes.

The 2023 Cadillac XT6 ushers in only a few small updates and changes over the preceding 2022 model year, including a limited expansion of driving coverage for the vaunted GM Super Cruise semi-autonomous driver assistance system that is offered as an option on Luxury Premium and Sport trim levels, but not on the base Luxury trim.

As noted above, Lexus recently teased the 2024 Lexus TX as a new three-row utility model set to rival the Cadillac XT6 and Buick Enclave as an indirect replacement for the discontinued Lexus RX L.

However, the 2024 Cadillac XT6 will arrive with no significant changes in spite of initial intel suggesting that it would receive a mid-cycle refresh. We now expect the updated XT6 to come to market for the 2025 model year.

Nevertheless, Cadillac has a lot going for it, with the brand ranking as the third-most considered luxury brand for the second consecutive quarter, edged out by Lexus and BMW in second and first, respectively. Meanwhile, the Cadillac XT6 ranked as the best upper midsize premium utility in the J.D. Power 2022 Initial Quality Study (IQS) last summer. But making no changes to the luxury marque’s largest crossover seems risky while competitors continue to announce new and refreshed models.

The 2024 Cadillac Lyriq lineup features Tech, Sport, and Luxury trims

It’s also worth noting that Cadillac is focusing on the EV front. The luxury marque is already all in with its Cadillac Lyriq all-electric crossover, running an ongoing aggressive ad campaign that includes product placements like that in the Creed III movie while planning to introduce a high performance variant called the Lyriq-V – the first EV model for Cadillac’s 20-year-old V-Series sub-brand.

Furthermore, earlier this year we spied an electric Cadillac crossover undergoing testing that, as we’ve noted before, will slot above the Lyriq with regard to the Cadillac’s EV crossover lineup, with overall dimensions similar to those of the current internal combustion engined XT6.

Prototype of 2024 Cadillac electric three-row crossover similar in size to XT6 that will likely slot above Lyriq

  1. I have never disliked a car more than my 2021 XT6 Premium Luxury!

  2. Another misleading headline. It’s number 9 in its 14 vehicle segment. You do this a lot.

    1. There’s nothing misleading about it. Everything in the headline is true and they even provided the numbers. You guys are on here are just extremely pessimistic for whatever reason. Lighten up.

  3. How do they make money on any of these low volume vehicles?

    Reply
    1. Well let’s do the math. We’re going to use the base starting point of the XT6 which is $48,795. So far they’ve sold 4,762 XT6s. So multiply $48,795 by the number sold and currently they’re at $232,361,790 in gross income from the sales of the XT6. Unlike most products, cars don’t have to set the world on fire with sales to make a proift. If they continue to sell at this rate throughout the next 3 qtrs then that would be almost a billion dollar in revenue from the XT6 alone
