The GM Authority Take

Chevrolet Argentina sales continued their positive momentum in February with a notable double-digit increase, enabling the Bow Tie brand to outpace the 4.8 percent growth rate recorded by the general Argentine automotive market. As such, last month’s good performance represents Chevrolet’s tenth consecutive increase in the South American country, mostly as a result of its locally-produced vehicles.

For the second consecutive month, Chevrolet Argentina sales were led by the Chevy Tracker, which was once again positioned as the brand’s best-selling model, as well as the most popular utility in that country. The subcompact crossover saw the highest growth rate in the market, and the performance enables it to position itself as the fastest growing nameplates in the Argentine market. For its part, the Chevy Onix also saw a notable increase, moving it up to third place within the Chevy portfolio.

In contrast, the Chevy Cruze suffered a major decline, further deepening its slumping performance in Argentina. The compact car, manufactured exclusively at the GM Alvear plant in Argentina’s province of Santa Fe, experienced a volume contraction of almost 500 units on a year-over-year basis, putting it behind the Tracker in terms of cumulative sales volume. This suggests that the company is prioritizing the production of the crossover to the detriment of the Cruze, which is nearing the end of its lifecycle.
