GM midsize pickup truck sales increased in the United States, Canada, and Mexico during the third quarter of 2022.
GM midsize truck sales are comprised of the Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon in the U.S. and Canada. In Mexico, GM sells the Colorado alongside the new 2023 Chevy S10 Max, and GM will introduce the next-generation 2023 GMC Canyon in Mexico for the first time ever. GM also officially confirmed the all-new 2024 Chevy Montana for Mexico, but the model is not yet on sale.

The good news is that two all-new models from Chevy and GMC, respectively, debuted to take square aim at Toyota and to shore up GM midsize pickup truck sales as production kicks off in January 2023.
In July GM debuted the 2023 Chevy Colorado, bringing to the forefront an all-new, third-generation model. It features a new powertrain and plenty of on-board technology in a revised exterior and an all-new interior. It is packaged in a redesigned body riding on an updated platform, resulting in a more refined truck that is also more capable off-road. The new truck is available in five trim levels – WT, LT, Z71, ZR2, ZR2 with the Desert Boss package, and the first-ever Trail Boss, which was formerly offered as a package on some model years of the second-gen Colorado.
While a few components of the all-new model carry over from the current model, including some of the frame and cab structure, just about everything else was overhauled, including the sheetmetal, propulsion, and interior. Under the hood of the 2023 Chevy Colorado resides one engine – the turbocharged 2.7L I-4 gasoline engine, in three states of tune. The tunes range from 237 to 310 horsepower and from 259 pound-feet of torque to 390 and 430. As first reported by GM Authority, the base turbocharged 2.7L I4 engine will receive the L2R RPO Code while the two up-level tunes will carry the familiar L3B designation.
Gone for the 2023 model year are the three engines offered on the 2015-2022 model years, including the atmospheric 2.5L I4 LCV gasoline engine, atmospheric 3.6L V6 LGZ gasoline engine, and 2.8L I4 LWN turbodiesel Duramax. A second-generation eight-speed automatic transmission will handle cog swaps.
The new truck will offer a vast range of available accessories, with Chevy set to offer over 200 individual parts and components from the Chevrolet Accessories catalog.
In August GM unveiled the all-new 2023 GMC Canyon as the third generation of the midsize pickup. Highlights of the all-new model include the first-ever 2023 GMC Canyon AT4X as the range-topping go-anywhere off-roader, along with revised exterior styling, an overhauled cabin, a new powertrain, and a range of tech goodies. The new truck is available in four trim levels: the mass-market Elevation, AT4 off-roader, Denali luxury cruiser, and the aforementioned AT4X, which offers an exclusive Edition 1 package. All trims feature a factory two-inch suspension lift, enabling ground clearance of up to 9.6 inches, as well as a dedicated off-road performance display page in the infotainment system.
Under the hood, all 2023 GMC Canyon trims come standard with the High Output tune of the L3B, rated at 310 horsepower and 430 pound-feet of torque. It is also mated to the updated version of the GM eight-speed automatic that addresses many of the transmission’s shortcomings.
The 2023 Chevy Colorado and 2023 Canyon are scheduled to enter production on January 25th, 2023, while production of the 2023 Chevy Colorado ZR2 and 2023 GMC Canyon AT4X will kick off in April of the 2023 calendar year.
Production of the 2022 model year was originally slated to end in October of this year, with orders halted in July. However, production of the 2022 Canyon was extended by two months, with a final production date of December 23rd and the last order window during the week of October 20th.

Isn’t it lowercase gm these days? Gotta fix that lineup!
Sounds like customers didn’t want to wait for new versions from gm and the big price increases?
It does?
I own a 2018 Canyon with the 2.8 diesel. I love this truck. Do I understand correctly that beginning with the 2023 model year the baby dura max engine will not be an available option? Thanks
Would have sold a lot more in 2022 if they actually made them. But they didn’t because they needed help paying the way for Evs. Made everyone wanting a truck to buy full size and pay sticker price. With the full size pricing, mid size truck sales are going to go way up. The only thing holding back the new truck sales will be the 5 foot bed.
At this point that really wouldnt bother me – as much as I would love a 6ft bed – the prices on full-sizes are just too insane. Do I want the large interior and bed- for sure- but I can get a pretty loaded Colorado (’23) for about 10k less than a 1500 LT/RST.
probally getting alot of people priced out of full-size these days – or fed up with the run-around on them as well.
I am sure the “you dont need a full-size to go to Home Depot” crowd will be happy with this news!
The Colorado/Canyons look great. I would buy one if I didn’t need a full-size truck.
I just purchased a 2022 Chevrolet Colorado LT loaded with Leather, Tow Package and etc. with all the incentives and rebates I got it for$36,090 out the door. I considered several full and mid size trucks including a Honda Ridgeline and couldn’t close to that price. The best price out the door on a Ridgeline was $45,500. I would like to have a 2023 Colorado but I didn’t want to pay MSRP and not get the rebates and incentives. I also wanted the V-6 instead of the 2.7L turbo although I’ve heard good things about it. Supply is catching up with demand. I think dealers are going to have to start offering some good deals otherwise dealer lots are going to start filling up with high price trucks.
Agree, I will probably wait and order a 24 Silverado.
What difference does it make? Basically we’re talking about the same vehicle, just different name plates built on the same assembly line. Personally I just happen to prefer the GMC.
If it doesn’t get better fuel economy, it’s GM’s fault for not using the correct transmission and saving $0.27 by using the (updated!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) old one.
Sales say otherwise, they are buying them up. Turbos are not a wear point for 100’s of thousands of miles, this isn’t 1980. Let me guess, you are a big fan of Diesels in a truck that have, wait for it, turbos running reliably…
MPG in the silverado with the 2.7 is the same as the V6 Colorado give or take depending on trim, so in the Colorado it will exceed the mpg which horribly exceeding the torque and down low power the V6 severely lacks.
100’s of thousand of miles…on a turbo…..haha. Wake up buddy. All turbo’s have to TTL ( a time to live). , the 2.7L GM turbo is a dual-volute design for low and high end power. Cool. So, It is over-worked most of the time… Let’s see how long the direct fuel injection runs with out carbon build up under such high fuel pressure and also how long the 3-phase camshaft lasts under the different engine loads. Engineering is cool on paper, which is why dealerships have service departments.
