Looking Ahead

Sales of the Chevy Express and GMC Savana combined actually put GM in second place overall among competitors during Q2 2024 in the full-size van space, though crosstown rival Ford vastly outsold it with just the Transit alone.

This is in spite of the Express/Savana being an old vehicle that dates back to the 1990s. The duo remains the oldest models in their segment by a wide margin and are even the oldest GM vehicles currently in production. Meanwhile, the field is offering substantially more modern and attractive products.

To make matters worse, GM eliminated the turbo-diesel baby Duramax engine, which was one of the key differentiators of the automaker’s full-size van offering. With the diesel gone, there’s now not much reason for fleets or retail buyers to opt for either of the two GM twins. Class-leading towing is one of this van’s only competitive advantages. However, competitors do not offer a diesel engine either.

Of course, a much-needed overhaul would substantially help GM in this space, but The General may have canceled any such plans, even though the automaker previously entertained plans to redesign the Chevy Express for the 2027 model year, keeping the ICE powertrain.

Additionally, this past December, GM issued a “Stop Build” order for four configurations of the 2024 Chevy Express and 2024 GMC Savana commercial cargo vans, halting production of those variants immediately, which may have impacted sales this quarter. Fortunately, production is back on track for both GM vans.

On a positive note, GM has sold more than 3 million Chevy Express and GMC Savana units to date.

About Chevrolet Express

The 2024 Chevy Express arrives with two new transmissions, which are the only changes for the Passenger Van, Cargo Van, and Cutaway configurations. While the 2024 Chevy Express cargo van initially dropped the naturally aspirated 6.6L V8 L8T gasoline engine, it is now available again. It joins the atmospheric 4.3L V6 LV1 gasoline engine as the only two powerplants offered in the 2024 Express. Check out the 2024 Chevy Express towing capacities.

Additionally, 2024 Chevy Express infotainment system upgrades are no longer available, leaving the 2024 Express with only one infotainment option: the base audio system, which consists of an AM/FM stereo with an MP3 player. That system includes an auxiliary jack and two front-door speakers.

Check out all the 2024 Express paint colors, interior colorways, and updates and changes for the 2024 Express Passenger and Cargo van.

The 2025 Chevy Express drops the audio system upgrade – the AM/FM stereo with MP3 player and USB port – along with several other features and options. In practical terms, this means that the 2025 Express will no longer have a CD player, Bluetooth connectivity, or USB port.

Additionally, the 2025 Express also loses the second 12-volt battery option, which could be used when the vehicle is not running without affecting the ability to start the vehicle.

Production of the 2025 Express is currently scheduled for October 7th.

  1. Considering how much these cost now, and how few of them they are building, combined with how ancient the platform is, it’s not much of a surprise that the sales are down.
Are they planning anything new with these vans anytime soon? Dropping those features sounds like something you’d do before winding down production.

  3. It’s GM’s own fault, they refused to build/sell them for so long, their customers went elsewhere. GM gave away that business.
