Originally introduced for the 1996 model year, the Chevy Express has soldiered on for nearly 30 years with minimal updates throughout its lifecycle. That being said, the 2024 model year is much of the same, and today, we’ll be seeing if there are any changes to Chevy Express towing capacities in the following GM Authority breakdown.
Before we begin, here’s a review of the available powertrain configurations for the 2024 Express. The naturally aspirated 4.3L V6 LV1 gasoline engine is offered as standard and is rated at 276 horsepower and 298 pound-feet of torque, while the naturally aspirated 6.6L V8 L8T gasoline engine, rated at 401 horsepower and 464 pound-feet of torque, is optional. Notably, the 2.8L I4 LWN turbodiesel Duramax engine was dropped for the 2023 model year, as GM Authority previously covered.
The 2024 Express gets a pair of revised gearboxes, including the GM eight-speed automatic transmission that pairs with the V6 engine, and the new GM eight-speed heavy-duty transmission that’s mated to the V8 engine. In addition, a 3.42 axle ratio and RWD is standard fare.
Another piece worth noting is that the Chevy Express is offered in a number of different body configurations, including Cargo Van and Passenger Van, as well as in regular wheelbase and extended wheelbase configurations. Furthermore, the Express is also offered in the Cutaway body variant.
With that covered, here’s the breakdown on 2024 Chevy Express towing capacities.

Express Cargo 3500 Extended Wheelbase | 3.42 | 7,200 / 3,266 | 3.42 | 10,000 / 4,536 |
As seen above, the maximum the 2024 Express is rated to pull is 10,000 pounds (or 4,536 kilograms) in all variants of the Express Cargo when optioned with the 6.6L V8 L8T engine. Meanwhile, the lowest towing capacity sits at 6,300 pounds (or 2,858 kilograms) in the Express Passenger 2500 Extended Wheelbase configuration.
Notably, these figures are unchanged from the 2023 model year.
As a reminder, the Chevy Express rides on the GMT 610 platform, while production takes place at the GM Wentzville plant in Missouri. Notably, the Chevy Express Cutaway is also produced by Navistar at a separate facility in Ohio.

I owned a 2015 Savanah 12 passenger I bought for towing a RV trailer (6,200#). It had the towing package and 6.0 V8. Hauling just my dogs, wife and field gear I could regularly get 21 mpg on the highway. If I towed the trailer it would get 11-13 mpg depending on the highway. It was rated 9,800 lbs max. It had the 6L90 Trans and 3.42 gear. Surprisingly they’ve derated the 6.6 to 9,600#?
WOW ! How interesting ……………….. Now give us some hard hitting reporting on when ANY of the cargo vans will be available to those of us ‘ single van buyers’ ! And while your doing your secret undercover clandestine reporting, find out about the van I ordered April 29 2021 ! WTF !!!!!!!
