2024 Chevy Express, GMC Savana Production Back On Track

As GM Authority covered back in December 2023, General Motors issued a stop-build order on the 2024 Chevy Express and 2024 GMC Savana. Now, it appears as though production of the two vans is back under way.

GM’s Stop Build order applied to the following configurations of the Express and Savana:

According to available information, there seemed to be an issue with the second-row seating area of the named variants. The 5-passenger Crew Van Package (ZP6) for the Cargo version of both models is normally priced at an additional $1,965.

Per The General’s Q1 2024 U.S. sales press release, the production issues plaguing the Express and Savana have been resolved. Meanwhile, GM Envolve sales are down 23 percent on a year-over-year basis, largely due to the Express and Savana stop-build order.

For reference, GM Envolve is the automaker’s commercial business arm designed for management of ICE-powered and all-electric vehicles.

As a reminder, both the Chevy Express and GMC Savana are offered in multiple configurations designed to fill specific roles, including Cargo, Passenger, and Cutaway. This lineup is likely to remain the case moving forward, as the Detroit-based automaker may have canceled its plans to replace the ICE-powered Express and Savana with gasoline-powered and all-electric variants.

Under the hood, engine choices for the two vans include the naturally aspirated 4.3L V6 LV1 gasoline engine, rated at 276 horsepower and 298 pound-feet of torque, and the naturally aspirated 6.6L V8 L8T gasoline engine, rated at 401 horsepower and 464 pound-feet of torque. Notably, the previously optional 2.8L I4 LWN turbodiesel Duramax engine was dropped for the 2023 model year.

In regard to structure, the Express and Savana ride on the GMT 610 platform, while production takes place at the GM Wentzville plant in Missouri. Notably, the Express Cutaway and Savana Cutaway are also produced by Navistar at a separate facility in Ohio.

  3. Been trying to order two of these vans for months. Just told that out dealer cannot get the allocations. Its sad, we have been buying these for our service van fleet since 2003. They are great vans and very reliable. Even our fleet account is meaning nothing to get the allocations. Its no wonder the sales are down when so many people want these but cannot order them.

    1. I work for a Chevy dealer on the fleet/commercial sales side. I’ve been struggling to get these for the last 2 years. We’re a fairly large dealer with 13 stores under our belt and still having to get them through 3rd party upfitters and looks like that pipeline has dried up for right now.

  4. They no longer offer a contractor package with storage boxes and ladder package a 3rd party vendor I think needs to do the installation

  5. U-haul and other large fleet buyers will probably get their quotas for the rest of the 2024 run. Hopefully the retail side will get back to normal for the 2025 models. I can wait. Best darn most reliable, versatile vehicle being made today.

  6. I got a 24 GMC Savana on Memorial Day after waiting 10 months for it on order. This was a LT passenger van with every available option. I really like it but have to say, the build quality is pretty abysmal at Wentzville. Tons of improperly installed interior parts, body panel alignment is terrible even by GM standards. The slider door wouldn’t even close. The dealer tried, but still couldn’t get it to work. Luckily I have a friend with a body shop who cut the catch and rewelded it so it closes now. The assembly tooling must be so worn out that body panels get welded out of position. Even the rear bumper was crooked. Panel gaps vary by 1/2” side to side and the quarter panels are rippled. The other thing I found amazing is that there is almost no sound deadening material and no undercoating anywhere. This is a $55k passenger vehicle built to low end commercial truck standards.
