Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)

Buick Enclave sales during the first quarter of 2022 kept the premium three-row crossover in second place in its segment, but barely. The Acura MDX remained at the top with a 20 percent decrease in sales to 13,558 units while the Enclave held the second spot with a 34 percent drop to 7,025 units, which is about half of MDX deliveries. Third spot was held by the Volvo XC90 (see running Volvo XC90 sales) which saw a 17 percent drop to 6,949 units, only 69 units short of the Enclave. The Lincoln Aviator (see running Lincoln Aviator sales) followed in fourth place with an 18 percent slide to 4,967 units while the Audi Q7 (see running Audi Q7 sales) took fifth place with a 49 percent drop to 3,962 units. The Enclave’s corporate cousin, the Cadillac XT6 (see running Cadillac XT6 sales), took sixth place with a 37 percent drop to 3,780 units. Finally, the Infiniti QX60 placed last with a 24 percent drop to 2,536 units as the model undergoes a generational changeover.

BUICK ENCLAVE -33.83% 7,025 10,617 16% 18%
VOLVO XC90 -16.62% 6,949 8,334 16% 14%

INFINITI QX60 -23.50% 2,536 3,315 6% 6%
TOTAL -27.55% 42,777 59,044

In terms of segment share, the Enclave held a 16 percent share, down two percentage points. The MDX held a 32 percent share, up three percentage points. Like the Enclave, the XC90 held a 16 percent segment share, but whereas the Buick saw a two percentage point drop, the Volvo gained two percentage points, likely at the direct expense of the Enclave. The Aviator held a 12 percent segment share, up two percentage points, while the Q7 held a nine percent share, down four percentage points. The XT6 also held a nine percent segment share, down one percentage point, while the QX60 maintained its six percent segment share.

Sales Numbers - GM Segment Sales - Q1 2022 - United States

MODEL Q1 22 / Q1 21 Q1 22 Q1 21
ENCLAVE -33.83% 7,025 10,617
XT6 -36.89% 3,780 5,990
TOTAL -34.94% 10,805 16,607

Combining the two GM crossovers in the segment, the Buick Enclave and Cadillac XT6, gives The General a 25 percent segment share with 10,805 sales, still well behind the MDX on both counts.

Sales Numbers - Lexus RX Family - Q1 2022 - United States

MODEL Q1 22 / Q1 21 Q1 22 Q1 21
RX -4.10% 26,795 27,941
TOTAL -4.10% 26,795 27,941

For the sake of reference, we’re providing sales figures for the Lexus RX below. The vehicle is now offered in both two- and three-row versions, the latter of which competes in the same general space as the aforementioned three-row models. Since Lexus does not break out sales of the two-row RX from the three-row RXL, not all RX sales can be applied to the premium three-row CUV segment. Instead, a more apt comparison would be to compare RX family sales to combined sales of the Cadillac XT5, Cadillac XT6, and Buick Enclave.

Doing so shows that the Lexus RX family accounted for 26,795 deliveries during the quarter while GM’s three entries saw a cumulative 15,798 sales.

Sales Numbers - GM Premium Crossovers - Q1 2022 - United States

MODEL Q1 22 / Q1 21 Q1 22 Q1 21
XT5 -43.09% 4,993 8,773
XT6 -36.89% 3,780 5,990
ENCLAVE -33.83% 7,025 10,617
TOTAL -37.75% 15,798 25,380

The premium three-row crossover segment contracted 28 percent to 42,777 units in Q1 2022, meaning Enclave sales underperformed the segment average.

The GM Authority Take

Buick Enclave sales performance during the first quarter of 2022 kept the model in second place in its segment, maintaining the spot it held during Q4 2021 and during Q1 2021. The Enclave’s result during Q1 2022 made it almost squander the second place position to Volvo, while also selling roughly half of the segment leader.

This relatively unsatisfactory of the Tri-Shield brand’s premium full-size crossover continues be the direct result of a lack of inventory stemming from idled production at the GM Lansing Delta Township plant in Michigan where the Enclave is assembled. This, in turn, is due to various supply related factors, including but not limited to the ongoing global semiconductor microchip shortage. Specifically, the plant was idled for several weeks in 2021 because GM was diverting chips to more lucrative vehicle lines, such as full-size trucks and SUVs. Luckily, Enclave production finally restarted the week of October 4th, 2021. However, that wasn’t fast enough to fill dealer inventories to optimal levels for a more successful Q1 2022 sales result.

In addition, a few new production issues stemming from the microchip shortage have recently cropped up to impact several Buick models. Narrowing those issues down to the 2022 Buick Enclave, GM finally resolved the unavailability of heated rear seat at the end of February, only to then face constraints leading to models being built without ventilated seat blower motors in April.

As a reminder, the Buick Enclave received a refresh for the 2022 model year that brought about changes to the exterior and interior, plus additional safety tech and exclusive equipment for the range-topping Avenir trim level. On the outside, the refreshed 2022 Buick Enclave features updated front and rear fascias for a more modern appearance. However, Consumer Reports dropped the 2022 Buick Enclave from its list of recommended vehicles due to reported reliability issues. This was less than two months after the publication recognized the 2021 Buick Enclave as one of the best luxury SUVs to buy right now.

Resolving the pesky production issues stemming from supply chain constraints will be key to strengthening Enclave sales, as the vehicle continues to enjoy high levels of interest and demand. That would mean a stronger second place showing, potentially even challenging the first place position of the Acura MDX.

    1. BR the Buick Enclave is built in America in Michigan I think your thinking of the Envision which is made in China! Also we own a 2019 Buick Enclave Essence and the interior is a great place to be, the engine are transmission are like butter half the time you don’t even know it’s shifting and you can barley hear the engine running, I have seen Acura, Infinity, Lexus Buick Enclave is right up there with them in my opinion! If your going buy consumer reports they are idiots they would give any foreign brand a recommendation even if the model was a lemon from the factory! As for me and my family we love our GM vehicles the Enclave is safe, reliable, and with 51,000 thousand miles on it it still feels new… It’s also how people maintain any vehicle from any brand… I guarantee you any of the consumer reports problems are from people who don’t know the difference between oil and antifreeze which I my cars I check at least once a month weither it’s a Toyota or Buick!

  2. On March 7, 2022, I ordered a 2022 Buick Enclave. Because of the options I ordered, and production delays, I was told by my dealer I would likely receive a 2023 model year. Do you have any clarity on this issue? Thank you.

  4. Thanks but I know that. I am saying the Encave to me so just too big, build a super high car quality this much smaller, something I can wash in 20 minutes, not an hour. I use to have a Caddy CTS coupe it was great it was to compete with foreign but people did not like the high price!

  5. I’m not surprised at this information. I ordered an Enclave Premium during November and was subsequently told is would not have heated seats, seat blowers, nor heated steering wheel. Unit was not produced until April without these features. As a result, not interested. Why would they not produce the Premium model with all installed features rather than the Avenir which is wanted by a lesser select market. Why can Chrysler produce a large inventory and G. M. can’t?

  6. These articles are really a waste of time when the biggest issue related to their sales results is the total lack of vehicles on the dealers lots. I can’t remember the last time we had one on the lot.
