The GM Authority Take

The decline in Chevrolet Argentina sales surpassed the 4.8 percent decline of the local auto market during the first month of 2022. The performance represents Chevrolet‘s ninth consecutive monthly decline in the South American country, where the brand has not only faced declining inventory due to the global semiconductor shortage, but also drastic limitations on importing most other GM models that are manufactured in Brazil.

Once again, most Chevy models offered in Argentina saw a decline in sales volume in January, including the Chevy Onix and Tracker, despite a high amount of pent-up demand. Both vehicles have a significant amount of unsatisfied demand in the Argentine market as a result of difficulty import units from Brazilian plants due to factors related to the COVID-19 pandemic. It’s worth noting that the Onix has traditionally been Chevrolet’s best-selling nameplate in the country, while the Tracker has become the fastest-growing subcompact crossover in that market.

The Chevy Cruze compact car family and the S10 midsize pickup were the only Chevy models that managed to post an uptick in sales volume year-over-year, with significant double-digit gains. The Cruze continues to reinforce its position as the best-selling Chevrolet model in Argentina thanks to its advantage of being the only vehicle that GM manufactures locally in the country, a position that it hopes to take full advantage of with the recent launch of the 2022 model year, headlined by new RS and Midnight versions.

  1. Maybe this is really about semiconductors, maybe not? Every OEM is having sourcing difficulties. GM Argentina follows a wider global trend of Chevrolet vehicles not being the most desirable offerings on the market.
Only in N America does GM thrive chiefly due to trucks and truck-based SUV models. Chevrolet fails to lead in any other segments with middle of the road offerings like Nox, Traverse, Blazer.
GM will end up like FCA only focused on what it does best in select markets.
