The GM Authority Take

Chevrolet Argentina sales posted yet another substantial decrease in March, with a double-digit rate of contraction higher than the decrease in Argentina’s automotive market during the same timeframe. In fact, this new negative result represents the 11th consecutive drop for the Bow Tie brand in the South American country, where it faces a particularly adverse situation that combines production difficulties with severe import restrictions imposed by local authorities.

Much like in February, the only Chevrolet models that managed to post an uptick in sales volume year-over-year were the Chevy Cruze and Equinox. The locally-manufactured compact car continues to increase its sales volume thanks to greater availability of units compared to other models within the range, thereby strengthening its position as the brand’s best-selling vehicle in Argentina. Meanwhile, the Equinox saw an uptick in sales for the second month in a row, though overall volume stayed relatively low.

For its part, the Chevy Onix returned to post a record low in March, with only 252 deliveries. That’s even lower than the 261 deliveries recorded in February. Despite extremely high levels of unsatisfied demand, the Onix lost its title as one of Argentina’s best-selling new cars due to two reasons. First is the global semiconductor shortage, which impacts production. Second are import limitations and restrictions from Brazil, where the model is made. Both factors have combined to deliver a crippling blow to the typically popular subcompact car range.
