Competitive Sales Comparison (U.S.)

Buick Enclave sales place the large three-row crossover in second place out of seven rivals in its competitive set in terms of overall sales volume, only behind the Acura MDX. The Enclave outsold the Volvo XC90 by 1,301 units (see running Volvo XC90 sales), its corporate cousin, the Cadillac XT6, in fourth, along with the Audi Q7 (see running Audi Q7 sales) in fifth, Lincoln Aviator in sixth, and the Infiniti QX60 in seventh.

From a segment share standpoint, the MDX claimed 26 percent while the Enclave and XC90 followed with 17 and 15 percent, respectively. The rest of the pack was made up of the Cadillac XT6, Audi Q7, and Lincoln Aviator with 11 percent each. The Infiniti QX60 lagged with 9 percent.

The premium/luxury three-row crossover segment contracted over 5 percent to 56,986 units in Q3 2020, meaning that Buick Enclave sales fell much faster than the segment average.

For the sake of reference, we are providing sales figures for the Lexus RX below. The vehicle is now offered in both two- and three-row variants, the latter of which competes in the general space as the aforementioned three-row models. Since Lexus does not break out sales of the two-row RX from the three-row RXL, not all RX sales can be applied to the premium three-row CUV segment. Instead, a more apt comparison would be to compare RXL sales to those of the Cadillac XT5 and Cadillac XT6.

The GM Authority Take

The decline in Buick Enclave sales in the third quarter of 2020 follows a 51 percent drop in the second quarter of 2020, a 30 percent drop in the first quarter of 2020, and a 30 percent decline in the fourth quarter of 2019. The crossover saw healthy growth during the third quarter of 2019, a 21 percent jump in Q2 and a 27 percent climb in Q1. Despite the steep drops in both sales volume and segment share, the Enclave has managed to retain a respectable position in a very competitive segment.

We attribute the drop in Enclave sales during Q3 2020 to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, which sapped supply. Additionally, the Enclave saw internal competition from a new GM product – the Cadillac XT6. Even so, adding the sales volume of the Enclave and XT6 equates to 16,186 sales, which is good enough to take 28 percent segment share for a first-place position.

We believe that Buick Enclave sales will rebound given that supply improves, which should take place as soon as Q4. In addition, the product should gain greater competitiveness as GM readies a refresh for the vehicle. Originally, the Enclave refresh/mid-cycle enhancement was supposed to have launched for the 2021 model year, but the virus has pushed the model back by one model year. The updated version will now launch as the 2022 Buick Enclave.

  1. No doubt the Cadillac XT6 and Lincoln Aviator may be stealing some sales from the Buick.

  4. I am waiting to read an article that doesn’t say it’s a competitive segment. If GM made three wheel cars they would figure out that they’re still competitive segments out there!

  5. After 50 plus years of letting foreign made cars into the USA market, maybe GM will figure out that their name no longer matters brand wise . Cadillac Buick both no longer have cachet. It’s a combination of lousy dealerships with lousy sales and aftermarket service as well as always being the last brand to offer features and services that other cars have first. USA manufacturers have definitely fallen behind in their engineering design and marketing hopefully one of the big three will get a fireball president who can inspire both of the bean counters and engineers to create wonderful product again. Quite honestly, I’m not one to go out to spend $50,000 on a mid-level SUV that does not inspire me like a work of art. This is something GM and Ford really have to work on. I hope management is actually reading this letter and saying to themselves now I know what the consumer really wants

    1. Article about the Enclave taking second place in its segment and you’re bashing GM…. your comments may seem relevant if the article was about the vehicle being last in its segment.
