Competitive Sales Comparison

Buick Enclave sales place the large three-row crossover in third out of seven rivals in its competitive set in terms of overall sales volume, behind the Acura MDX and Volvo XC90 (see Volvo XC90 sales). The Enclave outsold the Audi Q7 by 3,035 units, placing the German rival in fourth place (see Audi Q7 sales), along with the new Cadillac XT6 in fifth and equally-new Lincoln Aviator in sixth, and the Infiniti QX60 in seventh.

From a segment share standpoint, the MDX claimed 23 percent while the XC90 and Enclave followed closely behind with 20 and 19 percent, respectively. The rest of the pack was made up by the Audi Q7 with 11 percent, Cadillac XT6 and Lincoln Aviator with 10 percent each, followed by the Infiniti QX60 with 8 percent.

The premium/luxury three-row crossover segment contracted nearly 28 percent to 39,973 units in Q2 2020.

For the sake of reference, we are providing sales figures for the Lexus RX below. The vehicle is now offered in both two- and three-row variants, the latter of which competes in the general space as the aforementioned models. Since Lexus does not break out sales of the two-row RX from the three-row RXL, not all RX sales can be applied to the premium three-row CUV segment. Instead, a more apt comparison would be to compare RXL sales to those of the Cadillac XT5 and Cadillac XT6.

The GM Authority Take

The substantial decline in Buick Enclave sales in the second quarter of 2020 follows a 30 percent drop in the first quarter of 2020, which preceded a 30 percent decline in the fourth quarter of 2019. The crossover saw healthy growth during the third quarter of 2019, 21 percent growth in Q2 and a 27 percent climb in Q1. Despite the steep drop in both sales volume and segment share, the Enclave retained a respectable position in a very competitive segment.

We attribute the drop in Enclave sales during Q2 2020 to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, which resulted in substantial declines in demand and supply. Additionally, the Enclave saw internal competition from a new GM product – the Cadillac XT6. Even so, adding the sales volume of the Enclave and XT6 equates to 11,584 sales, which is good enough to take 29 percent segment share for a first-place position.

We believe that Buick Enclave sales will begin to pick back up as coronavirus-related impact to production and demand wears off. In addition, interest in the Enclave should improve as GM readies a refresh for the vehicle. Originally, the Enclave refresh/mid-cycle enhancement was to launch for the 2021 model year, but the virus will push its timing back to the 2022 model year.

  1. Wow. That’s a big drop and from the chart it seems nearly all in this segment are way down other than the XT6 Caddy. Seems to me that maybe that could be part of the Buick Enclave’s problem: Caddy taking some sales away from them. Even still, the Buick looks to be in second place yet.

    1. Yeah, you’d almost think we’re in a recession or something.

  2. 1ST NO advertisement 2nd people think ALL Buicks are foreign built

    1. No one under 50 cares where Buick is built. Gen X and younger don’t view America as a manufacturing nation in large part due to the high level of college educated people who only want “white collar” jobs.

GM sells few Buick vehicles in the US so would be insane to open an additional assembly line. If it were not for imports Buick, like Mercury, would be toast. We are no longer GM’s biggest market.

Buick design and quality is GM at it’s best and I realize Cadillac fan boys will be very upset by this comment.

    2. It’s reasonable to think that when only one Buick isn’t foreign.

  3. I can say after buying an Enclave I love it. Originally wasn’t even going to look at a Buick but my husband talked me into it. I took a test drive and was sold.

  5. I bought a 19 in late 18. I thought I’d get a bargain on the 18. Got 15k off list price bot only certain dealers offered it. I was an auto tech all my life and would only buy a GM vehicle. My son has a Traverse and ny daughter has an Acadia. They are built on the same platform with like drivetrain. You get a little more value with the Buick, a lot of the options are standard wrapped up in different packages. I g see t about 25 mpg around town and 28-30 on the highway. 30k on it now and no problems.

  6. I am on my third Enclave. I was a Ford buyer before but was sold on the solidness and quietness of the Enclave. I was disappointed that Enclave doesn’t have some of the safety features as standard equipment that even some of the lower priced foreign models have as standard.

  7. My 2009 enclave best vehicle I’ve owned was looking to replace in 2018 but new version wasn’t as comfortable. Been looking at 2016/ 2017 with more comfortable seating. Still have 2009, going strong with new tires.
Got a 2018 Acadia new version leasing and glad I am now having shift in park problems. Looking forward to GM expanded ev offerings as I enjoyed my 2014 volt. When will any car maker make a true utility vehicle. My only beef with my 09 47.5 inches between wheel well- can’t give me .5 inches so sheet goods could fit, thought about a truck but they don’t even make 8ft bed version anymore, and $50k for any vehicle from GM is too much. First ev maker to make a truck or true SUV with at least 300 mile range under $40k will dominate the market. Bring back my silhouette van in an ev- sign me up.

    1. Were it not for the cramped driver’s footwell, I’d have bought this generation Enclave in the blink of an eye.

    2. I bought a 2011 Enclave after having my heart set on an Acadia. A test drive was all it took & I was in love! At the time my daughter was in a wheelchair & I needed an SUV to be able to transport her. Just over a year later there are so many issues with my Enclave that my purchased extended warranty did not cover. The dealership I bought it from truly took me for a ride & sold me a bogus warranty that barely covered any repairs. Now I’m stuck upside down on my loan, needing a majority of repairs stemming from electrical to transmission. My Enclave has 110k miles on her & I have to say that almost as soon as I hit 100k miles, problem after problem started to arise with my car. Very sad, disappointed & frustrated! I’ve already spent almost $2k on other needed repairs & have barely had it a year.
I’m a single mom with 3 great kids. I lost my job when Covid started shutting things down & can’t cover the additional costs to fix my Enclave. Doing what I can do at minimum to at least make my car payments. I truly love my Enclave & wish I could afford a new one. But at this point I just wish I could afford to pay for the repairs!
