The GM Authority Take

September was the seventh consecutive month during which GM Mexico sales fell considerably, deepening the negative behavior experienced by the company in the Latin country, which has suffered a dramatic drop in demand for vehicles due to the economic difficulties associated by the COVID-19 pandemic. In fact, the September performance represents an even further setback for GM in Mexico after three months of sales volume improvements, reaching the best level in August since the coronavirus outbreak with 12,114 deliveries.

The all-new 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban went on sale in Mexico in early September

The vast majority of the vehicles offered by GM in the Mexican market suffered large declines in sales volume on a year-over-year basis, including noteworthy contractions in the deliveries of the Chevrolet Aveo and Beat – the company’s two best-sellers in the country. In fact, only six GM models managed to increase their sales in September, including the Chevrolet Corvette, Express, Suburban, Tahoe and Tornado. In addition, the GMC Sierra almost doubled its year-over-year volume and drove a healthy increase in sales for Big Red.

Meanwhile, the Chevrolet Onix once again positioned itself as the GM’s best-selling sedan in Mexico with 1,666 deliveries, while the all-new Chevrolet Tracker was the brand’s most popular utility vehicle with 743 units delivered during the first month of officially being on sale in the Mexican market. The results show that the first two members of Chevy’s family of vehicles based on the GEM platform are enjoying good levels of acceptance, despite the adverse market circumstances.
