Competitive Sales Comparison

Buick Enclave sales place the large three-row crossover third out of seven rivals in its competitive set in terms of overall sales volume, behind the Infiniti QX60 and Acura MDX. The Enclave outsold the Audi Q7 by 2,520 units, keeping the German rival in fourth (see Audi Q7 sales), along with Volvo XC90 (see Volvo XC90 sales), the new Lincoln Aviator in sixth, and the all-new Cadillac XT6 in seventh.

From a segment share standpoint, the QX60 tied with the MDX and Enclave with 18 percent each. The rest of the pack was made up by the Audi Q7 with 13 percent, Volvo XC90 with 12 percent, Lincoln Aviator with 11 percent and the Cadillac XT6 with 10 percent.

The premium/luxury three-row crossover segment contracted less than 1 percent to 49,813 units in Q1 2020.

For the sake of reference, we are providing sales figures for the Lexus RX below. The vehicle is now offered in both two- and three-row variants, the latter of which competes in the general space as the aforementioned models. Since Lexus does not break out sales of the two-row RX from the three-row RXL, not all RX sales can be applied to the premium three-row CUV segment. Instead, a more apt comparison would be to bundle Cadillac XT5 and Cadillac XT6 sales.

The GM Authority Take

The decline in Buick Enclave sales in the first quarter of 2020 follows a 30 percent drop in the final quarter of 2019 but healthy growth during the third quarter of 2019, 21 percent growth in Q2 and a 27 percent climb in Q1. But despite the drop in both sales volume and segment share, the Enclave retained a competitive spot in a tough segment.

We attribute the drop in Enclave sales during Q1 2020 to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, which resulted in substantial declines in demand during March. Additionally, the Enclave saw internal competition from a new GM product – the Cadillac XT6. Even so, adding the sales volume of the Enclave and XT6 equates to 13,826, good enough to take 28 percent segment share for a first-place position.

We believe that Buick Enclave sales will begin to pick back up as coronavirus-related impact to production and demand wears off. In addition, interest in the Enclave should improve as GM readies a refresh for the vehicle. Originally, the Enclave refresh/mid-cycle enhancement was to launch for the 2021 model year, but the virus will push its timing back to the 2022 model year.

  1. Winter and COVID-19 is a horrible situation especially if you’re in a state with a mandatory ‘stay in your home’ order by the Governor which means going outside only if necessary and shopping for a new car isn’t high on the list.
