The GM Authority Take

Chevrolet Brazil sales suffered another noteworthy drop in August, becoming the fifth consecutive month during which the Bow Tie brand saw a contraction in sales volume in the South American country. Not only did the decline cause Chevrolet to once again lose its previously-held first-place sales title to Volkswagen, but it was also overtaken by Fiat during the month, falling to third place for the first time in the last decade. However, Chevy still remains Brazil’s best-selling auto brand during in the first eight months of the year.

Nine of the twelve models offered by Chevrolet in Brazil saw a contraction in sales, with the most significant being the declines in the discontinued Prisma and Onix. Both cars totaled 29,647 sales in August 2019, while the current Onix lineup (which includes both the Onix Plus sedan and Joy) totaled 16,583 units. That represents 13,064 units less year-over-year due to the sudden drop in demand caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Regardless, the Chevrolet Onix firmly remains solidly the best-selling car in Brazil.

By contrast, the all-new 2021 Tracker and Equinox increased their sales significantly, driven by the boom in utility vehicle sales in the Brazilian market. The new-generation Tracker continues to perform in an excellent fashion, and is currently the second best-selling utility in Brazil, with the ambition to establish itself as the segment leader during the second half of the year. Both utility vehicles join the Bolt EV as the only models with positive numbers during the first eight months of the year.
