Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)

Cadillac XT6 sales during the second quarter of 2022 kept the luxury marque’s three-row crossover in eighth place in its segment when ranked by sales volume. The expanded segment now includes 14 entries, since we’ve added the Audi Q8, Lexus GX, along with the Land Rover Range Rover Sport. The Q8 is to the Q7 that the BMW X6 is to the X5, both being “coupe-like” versions of the more traditional offerings on which they’re based. The Range Rover Sport is pricer than the XT6, but lands in the same size and product category nonetheless.

Speaking of the BMW X5, it remained in first place with a 15 percent increase in sales to 19,049 units, while the Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class followed in second place with a 14 percent decrease to 16,458 units. The Volvo XC90 placed third with a 12 percent slide to 10,283 units, while the Acura MDX followed in fourth with a 49 percent drop to 10,052 units. The Cadillac XT6’s corporate cousin, the Buick Enclave (see running Buick Enclave sales), took fifth with a 48 decrease to 7,885 units, followed by the GX with a 13 percent decline to 6,701 units. The Lincoln Aviator (see running Lincoln Aviator sales) placed sixth with a four percent increase to 5,983 units, while the Cadillac XT6 took eighth with a 22 percent slide to 5,599 units.

The Q7 (see running Audi Q7 sales) followed in ninth with a 48 percent drop to 5,221 units, and the Infiniti QX60 took 10th place with a 227 percent leap to 3,245, after the model underwent a generational changeover. The Q8 placed 11th with a 45 percent decline to 2,782 units, while the Genesis GV80 took 12th with a 31 percent drop to 2,712 units. The X6 followed in 13th place with a two percent increase to 2,631 units, while the Range Rover Sport took up the rear with a 35 percent decline to 2,418 units.

For the sake of presenting a more complete picture of the competitive landscape, we’re provided sales figures for the Lexus RX below. Though the RX is a premium midsize CUV slotting in the luxury utility D-segment, competing with the Cadillac XT5, the vehicle is now also offered as a three-row model called RXL, which competes with three-row luxury models mentioned above.

Since Lexus does not break out sales of the two-row RX from the three-row RXL, not all RX sales can be applied to the premium three-row CUV segment. A more appropriate comparison would be to bundle Cadillac XT5 and XT6 sales. We’ve also included the Lincoln Nautilus and Aviator, which are direct rivals to Cadillac’s two models, respectively, and now the Lexus GX as well, as previously noted.

Combining sales of the Cadillac XT5 and XT6 results in 12,240 units, amounting to less than half of the 26,974 combined RX and RXL deliveries, and just over a third of 33,675 RX/RXL and GX combined deliveries.

The luxury E-Segment utility segment contracted 22 percent to 101,019 units in Q2 2022, meaning XT6 sales matched the segment average.

The GM Authority Take

Cadillac XT6 sales mirrored the segment’s performance this quarter, and combining sales with the Buick Enclave puts GM in third place in a competitive set that now includes three more models, as noted above.

Still, XT6 sales could have fared much better were it not for idled production at the GM Spring Hill plant in Tennessee for the better part of the 2021 calendar year due to ongoing supply constraints, including but not limited to the ongoing global semiconductor microchip shortage. To address this head-on GM recently announced that it will have its own family of microchips locked in by 2025, a move that is expected to offset future chip-related production delays.

Last year, GM elected to allocate its limited supply of semiconductors and other parts toward the assembly of more profitable models like its full-size trucks and SUVs. However, XT6 production finally resumed in full on December 6th, 2021, so maybe another quarter’s worth of sales will see the XT6 move up within its list of 14 entries thanks to increased supply.

The 2020 Cadillac XT6 was the first model year for the all-new, three-row luxury midsize crossover utility vehicle (CUV) from the automaker. Two years later, the 2022 Cadillac XT6 can now be ordered with GM’s Super Cruise semi-autonomous hands-free driving system. The 2022 XT6 also features more standard advanced safety features along with several other changes.

The 2023 Cadillac XT6 represents the fourth model year of the first-generation crossover, bringing only a few small updates and changes over the preceding 2022 model year, including several minor package-related changes.

As a reminder, the Cadillac XT6 crossover is offered with two engine options, starting with the turbocharged 2.0L I4 LSY gasoline engine, rated at 235 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. This engine is standard and only available on the base Luxury trim level. Meanwhile, the naturally aspirated 3.6L V6 LGX gasoline engine, rated at 310 horsepower and 271 pound-feet of torque, is standard on the higher end Premium Luxury and Sport trims. Output is routed through the GM nine-speed automatic transmission with front-wheel drive standard, and all-wheel drive available as an extra-cost option on Luxury and Premium Luxury, while being standard on Sport.

The XT6 rides on the GM C1 platform and the 2023 Cadillac XT6 began rolling off the assembly line on June 10th, 2022. The online configurator tool for the 2023 XT6 is now live as well.
