GM China Sales Down 36 Percent During Second Quarter 2022

GM China sales fell 36 percent to 484,200 units during the second quarter of 2022. Sales decrease at all five GM brands offered in the country, including Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, Baojun and Wuling.

SAIC-GM Sales – Q2 2022

Second-quarter 2022 sales at SAIC-GM – GM’s primary joint venture in China responsible for Buick, Chevrolet and Cadillac operations – decreased 41.8 percent to 205,200 units:

Buick sales decreased 43.1 percent to 128,300 units

  • The Velite EV family sustained strong market demand as deliveries grew 53 percent year-over-year to more than 8,000 units
  • The brand recently introduced its new identity and badge, signifying its accelerated transformation toward an all-electric future

Chevrolet sales decreased 36.7 percent to 40,000 units

  • Sales of the Chevy Menlo EV grew nearly four-fold year-over-year

Cadillac sales decreased 42.2 percent to 36,900 units

  • The Cadillac CT5 remained the brand’s best-selling model, with sales of more than 14,000 units.
  • The all-electric Cadillac Lyriq began rolling off the production line in May and is now available for order

SAIC-GM-Wuling Sales – Q2 2022

Second-quarter 2022 sales at SAIC-GM-Wuling – GM’s other Chinese joint venture responsible for Wuling and Baojun brands – decreased 29.9 percent to 279,000 units:

Baojun sales decreased 78.5 percent to 11,200 units

  • The youngest GM brand in China continues to see losses in sales volume, accumulating several consecutive quarters in the red falls

Wuling sales decreased 22.7 percent to 267,800 units

  • The Wuling Hong Guang MINI EV strengthened its leadership position in the EV segment, with sales rising 10 percent from a year earlier

During the first six months of the 2022 calendar year, GM China sales decreased 28.3 percent to 1,097,600 units.

  1. Is this due to more Covid shutdowns or the fact that China has a cap on the number of licenses they issue? The original reason China sold more cars than NA was because there was a run on car ownership as the licenses filled out.

    1. It’s mostly availability related. Factories were down for a few weeks due to COVID, inventory suffered as a result.
