Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)

Chevy Trax sales led the 21-vehicle segment during Q3 2024 when ranked by sales volume, as the Bow Tie’s still-new entry-level model continues to take the market by storm.

The Trax (see running Chevy Trax sales) led with a healthy 57 percent swell in sales to 59,299 deliveries. The Subaru Crosstrek kept second place with a 36 percent improvement to 52,347 units, while the Honda HR-V, still in third, posted a 16 percent upswing to 38,542 units. The Jeep Compass moved up several spots into fourth with a 71 percent jump to 34,632 units. The Chevy Trailblazer (see running Chevy Trailblazer sales), the Trax’s corporate cousin and Chevy’s second segment entry, got bumped to fifth place with a three percent dip to 29,609 deliveries.

In addition to the two Chevy models, GM’s Buick currently fields two entries. The Buick Envista (see running Buick Envista sales), the Trax’s VSS-F platform mate, took 12th place with 15,004 deliveries as sales leapt 179 percent. The Buick Encore GX (see running Buick Encore GX sales), which shares its platform with the Trailblazer, saw sales slip 27 percent to 14,675 units, placing 13th in the segment. The discontinued Buick Encore (see running Buick Encore sales) did not record any deliveries – the first quarter that this has been the case.

From a segment share standpoint, the Trax led with a 15 percent segment share, up four percentage points year-over-year. The Crosstrek earned a 13 percent share, up two percentage points, while the HR-V maintained a 10 percent share, and the Compass held a nine percent share, up three points. The Trailblazer earned an eight percent share, down one percentage point. Meanwhile, the Envista and Encore GX each posted a four percent share, up two two percentage points and down two percentage points, respectively.

The four GM vehicles in the mainstream subcompact crossover segment – the Chevy Trax and Trailblazer, along with the Buick Envista and Encore GX – accounted for a combined 118,587 deliveries and a cumulative 31 percent segment share. That result puts The General solidly in first place in the segment, accounting for nearly a third of all segment sales.

Removing the Soul from the Hyundai-Kia total nets 46,862 cumulative deliveries for a 13 percent segment share, bumping the conglomerate to fourth place overall behind Subaru.

Out of the 10 manufacturers represented here, three field multiple models in this space of 21 entries, though two of those models have been discontinued and are therefore destined to fall off this list. When combining sales volumes of those compared to automakers with a single entry, each ranks in the following order:

  • GM – 31 percent share (four models)
  • Hyundai Motor Group
    • 16 percent segment share, five models (including Kia Soul)
    • 13 percent share, four models (not including Kia Soul)
  • Subaru – 13 percent share, one model
  • Stellantis – 10 percent share, four models (the Fiat 500X has been discontinued, but remaining inventory continues to be sold)
  • Honda – 10 percent share, one model
  • Toyota – six percent share, one model
  • Mazda – six percent share, one model
  • Nissan – five percent share, one model
  • VW – four percent share, one model
  • Mitsubishi – one percent share, one model

Typically, automakers fielding multiple entries in this segment enjoy higher sales volumes and resulting segment shares. However, those with a single model, including Subaru and Honda, are also able to hold their own, actually outpacing automakers offering several models.

The mainstream subcompact crossover segment expanded 16 percent to 390,206 units during Q3 2024, meaning the Chevy Trax significantly outperformed the segment average.

The GM Authority Take

Chevy Trax sales continued to impress during Q3 2024. In fact, the Bow Tie brand’s all-new entry-level subcompact crossover seems unstoppable in a very crowded space, with sales up 57 percent in Q3 2024 and 130 percent year-to-date.

We attribute the immense success of the second-gen Trax to a competitive product at a low price point, along with ample availability of the vehicle thanks to it being made at a dedicated plant.

It’s also worth noting that the Trax is the best-selling utility vehicle for Chevy and GM. Additionally, GM is now enjoying the most dominant position it has ever had in the subcompact crossover space thanks to the one-two punch of Trax-Trailblazer and Envista-Encore GX.

About Chevrolet Trax

The second-generation Trax debuted for the 2024 model year. The 2025 Chevy Trax represents the second model year for the nameplate’s second generation, ushering in a few critical updates and changes. That includes two new paint colors and an E85-compatible engine, making it a flex fuel-capable vehicle. Here are all the 2025 Trax wheels offered, along with exterior paint colors and interior colorways.

The Trax’s turbocharged 1.2L I3 LIH engine develops 137 horsepower at 5,000 rpm and 162 pound-feet of torque at 2,500 to 4,000 rpm.

The 2025 Trax is set to become the third most affordable new vehicle in the U.S. as competing models are retired or get significant pricing changes.

  1. I have almost 21k miles on my 2024 Trax Activ so far, and it has been almost problem-free. I had to take it in for a software update, which is a very minor situation. The radio screen has glitched/frozen a few times now, and I haven’t taken it back for that because I’m pretty sure I will get the “concern not duplicated” rubber stamp answer from the dealership.

    1. Our just-purchased ’24 Encore GX had a full-fledged recall for the blank screen thing, which I made sure was addressed prior to delivery. That recall also covered the Trax, Envista and Trailblazer.

      1. That recall came out last November (2023) and the changes were implemented on the line.

  2. Now that we have an Encore GX with the punchy 1.3L, I don’t think I’d be happy with the smaller engine (in a larger vehicle), so the Trax and Envista are off the list for next year (replacing the other vehicle). I’m tall, she’s short, so I need something in a size class above anyway.

    1. I’m sure you’re really feeling a massive difference between the 1.2L and 1.3L. So sure.

    2. The Trax weighs less than the Encore GX, about 230 lbs less. You aren’t going to feel the difference between them with that 18hp & 12 ftlbs.

  3. My 2024 Trax Activ is slow and built to a price-point, but tell me where else I can get a reasonably high-tech, compact station wagon (slightly lifted) for 31K out the door?

      1. With terrible interior space, no thanks. It’s tighter inside than a Camaro.

    2. $31K for a Trax is beyond laughable. Base Trax’ – the ones that make the most sense – go for $20K. For $31K (out the door) you can get a new Equinox, totally loaded out. Trax stickers top out at $27K.

      Reply
      1. As usual, you are delusional at best. The Equinox starts at $29,995 – with zero options. You’re not getting a ‘totally loaded out” Equinox for #31k out the door.

        Reply
      2. No, you can’t get a “totally loaded out” Equinox for $31K. I did a “Build & Buy” and stopped adding when I hit $40K, still had several options to go.

    3. It’s not slow, not really. For all those that say it’s slow without ever having driven one (obviously not us), they’re just parroting what they’ve heard. At freeway speeds a downshift won’t shoot you down the road like an EV, but it’s pretty good below that, especially around town. $31K? Canadian dollars? My ’24 is loaded with absolutely every option and it barely stepped over $28K ($28,560).

  4. 1.3L TURBO 3 cylinder…ugh,

This thing is terribly slow, look at all the reviews. Great exterior and interior design, but handicapped by the engine. Come on GM, offer a punchy/sporty engine like Mazda does

    Reply
    1. I have looked at all the reviews and I own one. It’s not terribly slow. The Mazda also cost more. Mazda CX30 starts at $25K, which is the RS2/Activ price before you add options. The Mazda will only get more expensive as certain options (including that punchy/sporty engine) are only available on higher trims.

      Reply
    2. Base Mazda CX30 does the same 0-60 as the Trax. The turbo, which starts at $32K, will do a 5.8 0-60 time IF you use premium fuel.

    1. Why is it “too bad”? They’re still made by GM.

      Reply
      1. Because It’s foreign built vehicle anyway. If GM make those SUVs in America, It would be much great than don’t.

Despite what you may have read online in individual opinions, it’s clear the GM knows what it’s doing in this segment, just like it does with full-size SUVs. Sales are an absolute defense against all the boo-birds.

  9. We see Trax everywhere and all ages driving them. Those that I have asked love their cars. We’ve only seen the Buick version once. Wonder why it is doing so much poorer.

  10. Chevrolet (and Buick) dominate the segment. It is unfortunate that lower cost Trax canibilizes Trailblazer sales. Trax, and Envision, should have AWD options.

I hope Trailblazer and Encore GX aren’t cut and replaced with EVs. They ride on flawless VFF modular platform and producing four models is a bargin that also increases factory utilization.
Trax and Envista are beautiful and only Mazda CX 30 is an equal on beautiful design.

    Reply
    1. That would raise the base price if they offered AWD as they have to account for the cost whether or not they sell it, which would price the Trax/Envista right out of it’s market.
