Competitive Sales Comparison

Cadillac XT6 sales saw 5,074 deliveries during the first quarter, marking its third quarter of availability in the United States market, though one could make a solid argument that the prior quarter of Q4 2019 wasn’t exactly “full” due to the 40 day-long UAW strike, which depleted inventories of many GM models, including the XT6, at dealers across the country. Meanwhile, first quarter 2020 deliveries were stifled due to complications brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Nevertheless, the numbers put the three-row, midsize-plus crossover in last place out of ten in its competitive set in terms of overall sales volume. The segment was led by the BMW X5 and X6 duo delivering a combined 11,889 sales and the Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class (comprised of the GLE-Class and GLE-Class Coupe) with 11,802 deliveries, only slightly fewer than BMW. Third place went to the Infiniti QX60, followed by the Acura MDX in fourth, the XT6’s corporate cousin – the Buick Enclave – in fifth (see Buick Enclave sales), Audi Q7 in sixth (see Audi Q7 sales), Volvo XC90 in seventh (see Volvo XC90 sales), Lincoln Aviator in eighth (see Lincoln Aviator sales) and the archaic Lexus GX in ninth.

From a segment share standpoint, BMW and Mercedes-Benz had 16 and 15 percent, respectively. Infiniti had 12 percent and Acura and Buick each took 11. The XT6 held a six percent share. It’s worth noting that combining sales of the Buick Enclave and Cadillac XT6 results in 13,826 deliveries or a 17 percent share – enough to lead the segment in cumulative sales volume.

The premium/luxury three-row crossover segment expanded 3.5 percent to 78,626 units in Q1 2020.

For the sake of presenting a clearer picture of what’s taking place, we are providing sales figures for the Lexus RX below. Though the RX is a premium midsize CUV slotting into the luxury utility D segment (along with the Cadillac XT5), the Japanese vehicle is now offered in a three-row variant called RXL, which competes with luxury three-row models mentioned above. Since Lexus does not break out sales of the two-row RX from the three-row RXL, not all RX sales can be applied to the premium three-row CUV segment. Instead, a more apt comparison would be to bundle Cadillac XT5 and Cadillac XT6 sales. We’re also throwing in Lincoln’s XT5 and XT6 rivals, for good measure.

The GM Authority Take

First-quarter 2020 Cadillac XT6 sales, which represent the third quarter of the crossover’s availability in the U.S. market, were roughly 2,000 units less compared to the preceding quarter. During its short availability from a time standpoint, as well as relatively limited availability from a units standpoint, the XT6 has been able to make up quite a bit of lost ground in its segment, a solid result compared to significantly more established, deeply-rooted rivals from Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Volvo, Infiniti and Acura.

Additionally, XT6 sales during Q1 2020 were impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. As such, we remain interested in seeing how this three-row luxury CUV performs once shelter-in-place orders are lifted for plant workers to produce, dealer employees to sell, and customers to purchase the model.

About The Numbers

  1. Spin it however you want, blame covid-19, blame UAW strike . The fact still remains the XT6 is a dud and just a participation trophy from Cadillac.

    1. It’s you who has the agenda and wants your narrative to come true… so therefore it’s you who is looking to “spin it” – not GM Authority.

5,500 units at an ATP of $60,000 is $330 million dollars.

      Drops mic, exits stage.

      1. Why would I Alex, I own a Cadillac and I actually wanted an XT6 for my next purchase. The local dealer contacted me because we have a great relationship however, I was extremely disappointed when I drove one and I had it for 48hrs not parked up but actually drove it. It has nothing that makes it worth 60K…..other than a brand.

        1. TR you are right and Alex writes the copy. Excuse one, the UAW strike, Excuse two the Chinese Virus. The car stinks and is failing, its a pathetically weak effort and its shows in market acceptance and critical reviews. “I” wanted to buy one but its not a Cadillac its a GM platform used for 90% of their line up w/a slightly nicer interior and a Mercedes price tag. Buy the Mercedes its a the real deal. GM is cheap joke…

          1. Hahaha… I have said on several different occasions that Alex Luft makes excuses for GM and Cadillac! Now it seems others are calling his bluff… Cadillac, and the XT6 specifically, just shares too much with the GM parts bin, especially for the price…

@Alex, you dropped the mic, and please just leave it there. It would be more useful in someone else’s hands…

        2. I drove a Sport for a week in garnet metallic and black platinum interior. You are not comparing this car to the Acura MDX (Honda), Infiniti QX60 (Nissan), or Lexus RX (Toyota). My subjective opinion (like yours) is that the exterior design of this car was stunning and much better looking than those cars. The platinum interior was very nice but I hate the design of the center dash because the screen is too small (8 in) and the HVAC controls are cheap. That’s my only criticism for this car. Other than that, the engine had plenty of power and the transmission was buttery smooth. That is my subjective opinion. If Cadillac’s strategy is to sell a smaller number at high ATPs (and higher profit margins), then they are succeeding thus far.

  2. The XT6 is already a profit monster for GM. Once sales ramp back up, which they will, I can see the XT6 being near the top of the segment.

I say this because I’ve seen firsthand accounts of families reacting to the vehicle- do you think wealthy soccer moms care that it’s on a FWD platform? Shocker- they don’t. I personally wish it was on a RWD platform as it was intended to be. But the majority of the general population neither know nor care.

    1. wealthy soccer moms – are buying the BMW or the Mercedes. I seriously doubt they’re looking at any GM vehicle and sales show it. GM needed to submit a break-thru 3 row like the Aviator, but GM is cheap so it massaged the XT5 wheelbase by .02″ and spawned the 6. GM is ruining Cadillac by its pathetic “cheap cheap cheap” execution. The XT6 is nothing more than a platform for 8 other vehicles w/a slightly nicer interior… its NOT a Cadillac and neither are anything else they sell… the CT4/5 are going to be failures as well… while the Escalade is slick what is it… a fancy Suburban….

  3. A purchase is a vote.

No better way to judge the buying public’s acceptance / rejection of a product or service.

  4. This is frumpy Mary Bara’s design dream for all Cadillac’s. Make them boring, uninspiring, cheap interiors – its a winner people!

  5. The business case for this vehicle as rammed up deNysschen’s ass by Mary, Mark, and Dan was to be #1 in the segment.

Not #10, it was to be #1.

Cadillac is a dumpster fire. All new XT4 and XT6 in new segments and a new cheaper CT4 and CT5. Result is NO INCREASE in retail sales to speak of.

    Call the fire department.

  6. Alex-

With all due respect, the business case was for the XT6 to be #1 in it’s segment, not last. You can throw around revenue numbers and the like, but the fact remains, the vehicle is last in it’s segment. Of even greater comparison, Lincoln outsells it by more than 10%. I am not sure if this is what winning looks like.

  7. Six years ago, when it was really needed, this XT6 would have been something. We should be looking at a more refined 2nd gen XT6 by now. This is, unfortunately, too little and way way too late.

  8. Why no one seems to complain about the worthless 3rd row in the Lexus RXL?? If Cadillac produced an XT5L with a 3rd row you can even use I could only imagine what you all would be saying.

    1. Because Lexus has launched numerous hits and has a great track record.
Everyone knows what Lexus is and stands for, like them or not, and I’m not a big fan, but Cadillac has been misfiring for 25 years and the last 10 have been an expensive disaster. Sr GM Mgt is the reason and they should be fired…

I’ve owned a Lexus before they are great reliable vehicles. However building a 3 row crossover with a useless 3rd row in inexcusable I’m sorry. In fact my wife owns an XT6 and she can care less about rear wheel drive and some of the things us car guys complain about. It’s actually a very smooth riding vehicle, we can load our kids in it and ride.. Has Cadillac disappointed me with their lack of direction yes.. I just think some people are over critical.. just my humble opinion.
