U.S. GM Sales Decrease 7 Percent To 618,335 Units In First Quarter 2020

GM sales decreased by 7 percent to 618,335 units during the first quarter of 2020 in the United States market. Sales decreased at all four GM brands in the market – including Chevrolet, Cadillac, Buick and GMC.

As expected, the industry experienced significant declines in March due to the outbreak of COVID-19, the automaker noted in a press release.

“In this uncertain and challenging time, GM and our strong network of dealers are here to help, offering concierge service, providing courtesy transportation to customers in need and offering home delivery where permissible,” said Kurt McNeil, U.S. vice president, Sales Operations.

GM added that in many areas with stay-at-home orders, dealer service operations are considered essential and can remain open to address crucial vehicle needs for essential service providers like first responders, healthcare workers and food supply and delivery workers. In addition, safety remains the company’s top priority.

“Customers who need to purchase a new vehicle can use GM’s Shop. Click. Drive. program, which allows them to browse inventory, choose a vehicle, customize their payment and schedule delivery at home where available,” added McNeil.

To further assist, GM has enabled OnStar Crisis Assist services for owners of connected vehicles. The Detroit-based automaker has also enabled complimentary in-vehicle data for all Wi-Fi-equipped vehicles.

End-of-quarter inventory was 668,443 units, down about 18 percent from the same time frame a year ago. All vehicle production has been temporarily suspended in the U.S., Canada, Mexico and Brazil.

  1. Significant bright spot was Pick Ups… if they could maintain that rate, which is probably in question, they’d sell nearly 800k units. Not bad for a vehicle that needs the refresh…

  2. Surprisedly H/K and Subaru have major declines in the 30-40% range, that tells me that they were sucking air before the virus got a grip here for the quarter.

  3. If there’s no COVID, probably sales were up.
FCA is -10% and Toyota is -8,8%. Honda is -19,2%, Nissan -30% and VW -42% !
I’m guessing Ford. No word till now, I suspect nothing s good.

  4. Seems like the Bolt, Malibu, and Silverado sold well. It’s the SUV’s which sucked.
Also, the C8 will be limited to Exotic quantities for some time, maybe helping with the brand catchet a bit.

    1. Hmm, no MKC sales reported for 2019 and as a result, they’re showing an increase in sales year over year. Or are they hiding them somewhere.

Overall it seems Ford didn’t go into a lot of details on their sales numbers.

      1. Well it did settle the XT6 vs Aviator 1st quarter sales debate..pretty close but still a Aviator win.

  6. This is newsworthy?
Sales will truly suck 1st and 2nd FQ, especially YOY stats. I’d like to expect sales would pick up some, in the last 2 quarters.

  7. Malibu holds steady bucking industry sedan downward trend. Imagine if Malibu had been replaced by a lightly reskinned Lacrosse starting at $21.500? Such an offering might just push Chevrolet into the top three with while retaining decent margins given the car is already paid for.
Why has Honda crashed and burned? Accord, Civic and HR-V are very popular.

    1. The mid-size sedan is dead. More than likely either we’ll get a EV or an available EV option for Malibu and even Camaro for the 23′ MY.

OTOH the disasters of March may cause those plans to change indefinitely, I hope we’ll get an VSS-R replacement for Malibu.
