Competitive Sales Comparison

The Cadillac XT6 saw 7,169 U.S. deliveries during the fourth quarter, which was its second full quarter of sales in the U.S. market, though one could argue how just “full” the quarter was due to the 40 day-long UAW strike that depleted inventories of XT6 at many dealers around the U.S.

Nevertheless, the numbers put the three-row, “midsize-plus” crossover in sixth place out of seven in its competitive set in terms of overall sales volume, ahead of its crosstown rival, the new Lincoln Aviator.

The Acura MDX led the segment in first place, Infiniti QX60 was in second, Volvo XC90 came in third (see Volvo XC90 sales), followed by the XT6’s corporate cousin – the Buick Enclave (see Buick Enclave sales) – in fourth place and the Audi Q7 in fifth (see Audi Q7 sales). All five models outsold the XT6, with the difference between the XT6 and Q7 being just shy of 3,000 units.

From a segment share standpoint, the MDX led the way with a 21 percent share, followed by the QX60 with 16 percent and Volvo XC90 with 15 percent. The Buick Enclave and Audi Q7 took 14 percent each, while the Cadillac XT6 and Lincoln Aviator accounted for 10 and 9 percent, respectively.

The premium/luxury three-row crossover segment expanded 14 percent to 71,016 units in Q4 2019.

For the sake of presenting a clearer picture of what’s taking place, we are providing sales figures for the Lexus RX below. Though the RX is a premium midsize CUV slotting into the luxury utility D segment (along with the Cadillac XT5), the Japanese vehicle is now offered in a three-row variant called RXL, which competes with luxury three-row models mentioned above. Since Lexus does not break out sales of the two-row RX from the three-row RXL, not all RX sales can be applied to the premium three-row CUV segment. Instead, a more apt comparison would be to bundle Cadillac XT5 and Cadillac XT6 sales.

The GM Authority Take

Fourth-quarter Cadillac XT6 sales, the second full quarter of the crossover on the market, nearly doubled compared to the preceding quarter. Additionally, the XT6 has already made up quite a bit of ground with its 10 percent segment share, a solid result compared to more established, deeply-rooted rivals from Audi, Volvo, and Infiniti, which hold 14-15 percent market share.

We believe that the promising Cadillac XT6 sales performance is the result of various crucial factors coming together at just the right time, and GM delivering on many levels, including a desirable product, marketing, sales operations, and supply. The product is, arguably, the most important of these elements, and similar to the Enclave, the XT6 hits the mark as a result of a very good, practical, and highly attractive offering that has the right mix of style, comfort, technology and other desirable factors. Though some have derided the XT6 as being less attractive than the competition, particularly when compared to the Lincoln Aviator, the sales figures seem to show otherwise.

In addition, we have been told by sources familiar with the matter that the XT6 was impacted “significantly” by the 40 day-long UAW walkout, and that sales would have been even higher had the strike not impacted production and, by association, availability at the retail level.

About Cadillac XT6

The Cadillac XT6 is a three-row premium luxury crossover. The model represents a new addition to the Cadillac model range as part of the brand's crossover expansion strategy. It slots above the the compact Cadillac XT4 and midsize Cadillac XT5 in the Cadillac crossover SUV lineup. Its size classification can be best described as "midsize plus", as it is bigger than midsize but not big enough to be classified as full-size.

The XT6 was announced at the 2019 North American International Auto Show in January 2019 and goes on sale in the spring of the 2019 calendar year as a 2020 model. It is based on the regular-length variant of the GM C1 platform shared with the XT5, but with more rear overhang than the XT5. That extended rear overhang enables it to accommodate a third row. The rest of the vehicle is very similar to the XT5, including its engine, transmission, and cockpit.

  1. Those are very good numbers considering the supply constraints in Q4 due to the strike.

Q1 2020 should be much better. Dealers are finally able to get their hands on more than one at a time.
