The GM Authority Take

In January 2020, Chevrolet registered its first increase in monthly sales figures in nine months in Korea. However, February saw Chevrolet Korea sales fall, representing the first decrease for Chevrolet in Korea for the 2020 calendar year in South Korea.

The Bow Tie brand attributes the decrease to a lower number of business days in the month compared to February 2019, as well as the coronavirus outbreak (COVID-19), which was relatively new during the month of February. In any event, year-to-date sales so far this calendar year show a slight 1.5 percent contraction.

Although most Chevrolet models showed significant drops year-over-year, one positive bit is that combined sales of imported models (Bolt EV, Camaro, Colorado, Equinox, and Traverse) exceeded 1,000 units for the fourth consecutive month. Meanwhile, the Spark continues as Chevy’s most popular model in sales volume, as it was the only locally-made vehicle to register an increase in year-to-date sales.

However, the highlight is that February was the first month that the all-new 2021 Chevrolet Trailblazer was on sale in Korea. The new subcompact crossover became the second-best-selling Chevrolet vehicle during the month, registering 608 registrations, representing a solid start to the business. Sales are expected to increase in the coming months, as the local situation generated by the COVID-19 pandemic improves.
