The GM Authority Take

Chevrolet sales in the United States experienced a slight decrease in the first quarter of 2020, which caused the brand to sell 16,979 fewer units than during the same period last year. As expected, the entire automotive industry experienced a significant decline in March due to the COVID-19 outbreak, with the virus being the primary reason for the drop in Chevrolet sales as well as the vast majority of brand in the U.S. market.

Despite this unfavorable circumstance and the notable declines in sales of 12 of the brand’s 20 nameplates – several of which have been discontinued – six Chevrolet models experienced very healthy sales performance. The new Chevrolet Silverado range posted a solid 27 percent increase year-over-year, with gains for each of its three sub-models: Light Duty (1500), Heavy Duty (2500HD and 3500HD), and Medium Duty (4500HD, 5500HD, and 6500HD).

Meanwhile, the Chevrolet Blazer posted its second-best quarterly sales performance since its introduction, showing a whopping 633 percent increase over Q1 2019 – which was its first full quarter on sale, albeit with limited availability. The Bolt EV, Low Cab Forward, Malibu, Spark and Trax also managed to see increased sales. In addition, the all-new 2021 Chevrolet Trailblazer registered its first three deliveries during the first quarter. The pandemic is negatively impacting the new crossover’s distribution to dealers.

GM will not kill the Camaro without a suitable replacement.

  3. These sales figures are actually not too bad, see the Asian bloodbath that occurred last quarter, (some of them off up to 50%).
