GM Mexico sales decreased 10 percent to 16,528 units in March 2020 compared to March 2019 results. Sales fell at all four GM brands in the market, including Chevrolet, Cadillac, Buick and GMC.
Brand & Model Sales
Chevrolet sales decreased 10 percent 15,847 units:
- Chevrolet Aveo sales decreased 52.33 percent to 2,931 units
- The Mexico-market Aveo is imported from China, where it is sold as the Chevrolet Sail
- Chevrolet Beat sales decreased 24.81 percent to 4,550 units
- The Mexico-market Beat is the first-generation Spark, with the sales figures comprised of the Spark five-door hatch and the Spark four-door sedan
- Chevrolet Blazer sales increased 140.54 percent to 89 units
- Chevrolet Bolt EV sales increased 100 percent to 6 units
- Chevrolet Camaro sales decreased 66.67 percent to 11 units
- Chevrolet Cavalier sales decreased 68.24 percent to 390 units
- The Mexico-market Cavalier is imported from China, where it is sold by the same name
- Chevrolet Colorado sales decreased 13.74 percent to 113 units
- Chevrolet Corvette sales were flat at 4 units
- Chevrolet Equinox sales decreased 23.72 percent to 119 units
- Chevrolet Express sales increased 21.88 percent to 39 units
- Chevrolet Malibu sales decreased 92.86 percent to 1 units
- The model has been discontinued in Mexico
- Chevrolet Onix sales totaled 2,609 units
- Chevrolet Silverado sales increased 536.14 percent to 3,397 units
- Silverado sales include sales of the Silverado (available only in the Work Truck trim in Mexico) and the up-level Chevrolet Cheyenne
- Chevrolet Spark sales decreased 53.21 percent to 489 units
- Chevrolet Suburban sales decreased 57.5 percent to 68 units
- Chevrolet Tahoe sales increased 10.53 percent to 42 units
- Chevrolet Tornado sales decreased 66.94 percent to 163 units
- The Chevrolet Tornado small pickup is imported from Brazil, where it is sold as the Chevrolet Montana
- Chevrolet Traverse sales decreased 22.03 percent to 46 units
- Chevrolet Trax sales decreased 41.57 percent to 780 units
Cadillac sales decreased 26 percent to 68 units:
- Cadillac ATS sales decreased 80 percent to 1 units
- The vehicle has been discontinued and is being replaced by the CT4 on the low end and CT5 on the high end
- Cadillac CTS sales decreased 100 percent to 0 units
- Cadillac Escalade sales decreased 50 percent to 13 units
- Cadillac XT4 sales decreased 16.28 percent to 36 units
- Cadillac XT5 sales increased 12.5 percent to 18 units
- Cadillac XT6 sales have not yet commenced in Mexico
- The Cadillac CT6 is not offered in Mexico
Buick sales decreased 15 percent to 166 units:
- Buick Enclave sales decreased 20 percent to 48 units
- Buick Encore sales decreased 5.17 percent to 110 units
- Buick Envision sales decreased 57.89 percent to 8 units
- Buick Regal has been discontinued in Mexico
GMC sales decreased 4 percent to 447 units:
- GMC Acadia sales decreased 17.57 percent to 61 units
- GMC Sierra sales increased 1.36 percent to 224 units
- GMC Terrain sales increased 2.92 percent to 141 units
- GMC Yukon sales decreased 34.38 percent to 21 units
- The GMC Canyon and Savana are not offered in Mexico
During the first three months of the 2020 calendar year, GM Mexico sales decreased 2 percent to 50,342 units.

The GM Authority Take
After registering a sales volume increase in February – its first in recent months – GM Mexico sales decreased markedly in March. This result was driven by declines in each of the four brands that the company markets in Mexico stemming from government restrictions to contain the spread of COVID-19 in the country. In addition, the year-to-date sales so far this year fell slightly compared to the same period in 2019, with GMC being the only brand that still maintains positive figures for the timeframe.
Although most models posted disappointing sales figures, March was a good month for two Chevrolet models – the Silverado and Onix. Silverado sales increased 536 percent, allowing it to reach no less than 3,397 units sold – the highest figure the model has recorded in Mexico in recent years. Meanwhile, the new Chevrolet Onix delivered 2,609 units in its first full month on sale in Mexico.
Going forward, GM Mexico sales will likely decrease significantly until economic and lifestyle impact associated with the COVID-19 pandemic come to an end.
