The luxury D-sedan segment saw cumulative sales contract 9 percent to 58,125 units during the third quarter of 2020.
The GM Authority Take
The Cadillac CT5 was outsold by most rivals during the third quarter of 2020. We attribute the circumstance to the all-new entry still establishing its presence in the segment. The Q3 2020 sales results were 1,426 units higher than the 2,575 deliveries in Q2 2020 and 1,001 units higher than the 3,000 sales in Q1 2020.
We expect Cadillac CT5 sales to continue growing in the coming quarters as both inventory and consumer awareness of the model improve, enabling the new Caddy to obtain a substantially more favorable position in the segment.

Cadillac has nice cars the biggest problem is naming. I don’t know why or who’s idea it was to start following the Import method but it don’t work for the American market customers. Why GMC name the lower models that all looks the same minus the Camaro that’s totally lost it’s way and use letters and numbers for Cadillac brand shows they don’t know their base. American people relate to names that why the Cadillac Escalade name was never changed
Lol, throw salt on some good news, so a car debut it supposed to be #1 instantly because of a name?, this isn’t 1965 anymore. If that was the case the Continental wouldn’t been canceled, BTW the best sellers in this segment is numbers & letters (3-Series, E-Class) and Caddys last best selling sedan was letters (XTS)..
Agreed. Cadillac needs to stop aping Mercedes and BMW and cater to the American audience. The Cadillac SUV styling is fine. Cadillac sedans styling leaves me cold. Too angular and ungraceful.
Cadillac is aiming for a global luxury audience with China being the biggest market.
I’m tired of people upset about vehicles not looking “American” enough or complaining that GM like BMW is transcending language by using a alpha numerical scheme.
Alfa Romano, Lincoln and Maserati haven’t bvb een aided by real names. The product is what really matters and an easy to say and understand name makes things easier.
Everything is global whether its design or naming. Buick uses being American as a draw so uses names like Envision but the product must be good if it is to sell
but it seems the chinese aren’t that interested in performance. they seem to value comfort more. and that is what american luxury used to mean … bold and luxurious design.
@Mitchell
Isn’t the new CT5 catered to the so called American Buyers (which I disagreed with then and still do) you are talking about?
So what happened then? Why can’t Cadillac sell this vehicle in an y meaningful numbers?
There is a reason why Mercedes, Audi, and BMW use the same Formula and that is because it works.
GM once again chose to go the cheaper route and we see what that is getting them.
The CT5 and the CT4 have have been generally positively reviewed by automobile writers.
They are legitimate competitors to BMW, Mercedes and Audi sedans —- especially the V series and later the Blackwing.
Additionally they have some unique features with Magnetic Ride Control, Camera mirror and soon Super Cruise.
It does not seem that Cadillac markets them often and well.
When will Super Cruise actually be available to order on the CT5?
I continue to hope Cadillac will surprise us with a convertible version of the CT4 and/or the CT5. A convertible CT4 Blackwing would be a great alternative to the Corvette C8 when one wants a four seat convertible.
I think a 4-door convertible is coming via E/V, might be based on Celestiq IMO.
Sidenote I think Lincoln is dropping the ball by not offering a CD6 sedan plus an E/V sedan and utility.
I think most have agree overall brand strategy. We’ve all beat the dead horse about the V and naming nomenclature. That said the underlying positive news is they’ve done this with 0 mass media marketing. I get CT5 ads on YouTube and probably only cause I’ve watched review videos and built out some models on the website. I feel like more market share could have been captured by making this a sport back.
I also have no idea why they gave the press the 2.0 just to get it in their hands. Shoulda waited for the 3.0 IMO to get some nice tailwinds
Lack of consumer awareness? Cadillac can’t market themselves out of a paper bag. I’ve seen a couple of Escalade commercials in the past few months, that’s it! When a Datsun with chrome outsells you you’re in serious trouble.
I would like to know why you can’t get warrentry work done at all G.M. and G.M.C Dealer ships? I just bought a 2018
Cadillac XT5 Luxury Haven’t had it very long but is a couple steps above other cars. Haven’t had anything to drive then G.M
products.
Just another example of the 2.0T, taking the wind out of another great Cadillac.
And like ” I want a Lyriq ” said, why would GM let ANYONE in ANY marketing roll drive a 2.0T first ?
The 3.0TT should be sitting on the dealer lots, with the 2.0T as an ordered option, out of the gate.
Didn’t GM learn ANYTHING with the demise of the awesome CT6 ?
The 2.0T, out of the gate, killed the CT6, does GM want to kill this ICE ?
What is going on there, my local dealer has had the same 2.0T s on the lot from the get go, but if you want to test drive or outright buy the 3.0TT, you have to wait and order it.
GM is going to kill this Cadillac, just like the other ICE Cadillacs, because GM doesn’t want to ship what the Cadillac customer wants.
Look at the data above, AGAIN, There are 137,569 Cadillac customers, AGAIN, 137,569 Cadillac customers, people like ME, who WANT TO BUY A Cadillac, who bought the other brands.
It does make me feel kind of good that its just not me, and that 137,569 Cadillac buyers thought that Cadillac can not get it right just in 2020 !
IMO, A cheap dash !
IMO Literally a piece of cheap plastic where a window should be.
IMO You can only test drive the 2.0T dud version.
I am just curious, I wonder if when the Cadillac EVs get to the dealerships, If GM will limit the acceleration of them to match the 2.0T dud, or step it up to the 3.0TT, or just let her run free as an EV !
I bet they limit it to the 2.0T dud !
Then it would be in line with the feel of the XT4, CT6, CT5, and CT4, when released, DUDS !
Well, 90% of them have the anemic 2.0. I sat in some the other day at the dealer. Trying hard to like them. If I out live my XTS Plat., I’ll be looking for a new sedan and I can live with the puny trunk as there is plenty of room in the back seat. Put the regular gas n/a lgx 3.6 in it and I will but one. No buzzy 237 hp 4 banger. 0-60 in forever. I know it’s decontented for price, but hard plastic lower doors on a Platinum? Gripes, tiny trunk means why isn’t there a pass through rear arm rest hatch for long stuff. Front seat cushion about 1 1/2″ shorter than my XTS. Also, all that ersatz grille looking solid plastic mesh trend leaves me scratching my head. I finally see a couple around town. Hopefully it grows on me.
Before I got the KT5 I got to test he KT4 This is like sitting my Corvette but smaller. If I would have got the smaller Cadillac
I sure I know I would not have been Happy. Pleased with the size of the 2018 Luxury KT5 and the ride and more.
Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
Happy G.M. owner
Al. Schultz
Bring the 1980s classic “Cadillac Style” commercial back with the catchy jingle. Showing off all their designs, technologies, and sportiness.
I would do a high viewership special (Superbowl, Sports Championship game, Emmies, etc.) where it would show MBs how they are used around the world from C to S-Classes, doing plebian work in Taxi/Fleet use show their Sprinter/Metris doing construction/ plumbers duties. Or show BMWs in police/taxi/Fleet use and at the end of the commercial a sophisticated person saying with a grin… “Still think these nameplates are real luxury?” (Laughs off into the sunset)
Great point! Cadillac could start marketing themselves much much better.
As I said when the new Cadillacs were first shown, those interiors are not good enough to convert NON GM Fanboys to the Brand. The Escala interior is what I said years ago that every Cadillac should have. They only gave it to the Escalade. It is embarrassing when Hyundai and Kia have more modern looking interiors that your so called Luxury (Sporty) Division.
Not sure why people have still not realized that interiors is what has been selling cars the last however many years. GM needs to understand this and do something about it ASAP.
Everyone who uses a vehicle sits in the interior, is that hard to figure out ?
If this CT5 had the Escalade type interior and a window in the side rear and the 2.7T and 3.0TT they would be flying out of the dealerships.
Its just the pennies people, the pennies. The dollars are fine, its the last pennies.
Like building anything, the money is in the details.
We attribute the circumstance to the all-new entry still establishing its presence in the segment. – if they’d kept the ATS/CTS names folks would already know what they were but no, GM continues to make mistakes and trip over themselves. This is simply an excuse (establishing their presence) as if these vehicles were class leading and better than their competition EVERYONE would be looking at them, but they’re not. The Genesis is hot on the heels of this vehicle and combined with the niche Alfa they beat it… Genesis is “still establishing its presence” and its offering great vehicles that offer great value, which was the Lexus formula 35 yrs ago… a better product at a better price. GM offers ‘ehh” for premium money, then they incentivize the crap out of them, then recall them until the resale is in the toilet…. Cadillac and GM are a mess….
The 2.0 turbo is now an embarrassment… May be GM can update it again and get its output below 200!
If these cars are here to stay, I hope they evolve to capture greater market share. Make a convertible with the CT4 and a sport back with the 5.
I get SUVs are here to stay but help me justify a fun 2nd car with AWD for weather and enough space to make the weekly grocery run or small Costco run.
Day after day on here I read massive complaining about the 2.0L Turbo. For everyone here constantly moaning about it, have you taken a look around? Here is a quick list of just the other luxury brand also using a 2.0L turbo:
Volvo
BMW
MB
Alpha
Audi
VW
Acura
Infiniti
Land Rover
Lexus……………………………
I could certainly go on and the list is very long (too long to put on here). So once again I ask, why keep ranting about the 2.0L turbo when it’s so universal? And if you are actually buying one and don’t like that engine, buy one with the V6 or buy another brand.
BTW, if you do go out to other brands looking for something more than a 2.0L turbo, don’t come to Volvo. They offer only the 2.0 in several configurations: T4 (lowest HP), T5, T6 (Turbo and supercharged) and T8 (Turbo, supercharged and plug in electric combined). But if you want a v6 or v8, too bad.
My point is that people on here like to tell me (and some other like-minded old-school Cadillac types) to “move on” when we complain about not having names, etc. So I feel it’s time for us to say move on. Smaller engines, 4 cyl, EV’s are here and won’t be going away.
And yet 137,596 Cadillac customers have said that the Cadillac 2.0T is NOT better then the ones they currently drive !
One or two or three or four people here say the 2.0T dud is the same thing the others have, and yet 137,569 customers have said ” nope, no they are not !
I know some people here believe that the 137,000+ people do not know what they are talking about, yet the numbers do not lie !
And when GM gets just 100,000 of those people back to Cadillac, if that could happen, it will NOT be in the 2.0T vehicle, not in the USA anyway, China, yes, USA never !
Thank you !
Carry on !
I hear you lifelong. But what are those people going to then? What vehicles? Which engine? My point is that the list of cars offering a 2.0L turbo as standard or the only engine is quite long. What’s more, GM/Cadillac’s 2.0 is right there with all the rest (not tops, but not bottom either) in terms of refinement and power.
So if these 137,000+ people are going into a Cadillac dealership, driving, not liking the 2.0, then walking out and buying/leasing another brand, what is it? Because chances are, they are going to yet another vehicle with a 2.0.
Dan Berning,
I have told you so, so, so d4m many times, your answer. YET you STILL just can NOT get it. I know you and the Cadillac people in charge don’t want to believe it. Yet here it goes AGAIN.
Just like you responded to Walt in the NA vs Turbo post, You just don’t get it.
Here it goes again, every time I compare, by the time you get all the standard options EQUAL, and the vehicle in front of you, the Cadillac is MORE. Base Stripped down price, Cadillac IS cheaper.
OK so now to the 2.0T, the others are MORE, even the base is 10 ftlbs more and then most tune it higher for the top option to 20+ more ftlbs. AND every one of the competition, I HAVE DRIVEN, drive better. NOT the alpha, platform handling better, performance better, shift points, and for instance, the quattro in the Audi vs our AWD ATS, it is NOT the same. The quattro is smooth in the tight cornering on dry pavement, and the ATS jumps as the AWD tightens up. Now I prefer the Alpha, RWD/AWD so next.
History of ME, Myself, A Cadillac driver, OWNER, BUYER. I mean I buy them and drive them, not lease them. I am not a 30,000 mile owner, I am a 140,000 to 200,000 mile owner.
So here we go again:
First Cadillac 1996 DeVille NorthStar, That vehicle was just GREAT, just a GREAT Cadillac. I sold that car with 196,000 miles on it, and it purred like a kitten, and great mileage, 24 +.
My Uncle in Tennessee had one also, and for longer than me, over 200,000 miles and still drove it to SD to visit.
So great just like my grand pappy said !
Next we went to 2005 STS and SRX, both NorthStars the SRX, GREAT vehicle. The STS was to big so the 2004 CTS we went, This 2004 CTS, we still own, is the BEST GM vehicle I have EVER owned. SO OK there. Love those Cadillacs !
So here is where we go off the rails, and GM also, right into bankruptcy.
So our SRX, transfer case chain at 77,000 miles ish, NOT close to 100,000 miles. Not one word said, first AWD Cadillac so a learning curve. replaced that chain, and drove the car for 140,000+ miles, GREAT !
So after having such luck with my DeVille, I bought my mom one 1999 ( new body ) Deville she loves that vehicle also still has it today, her last vehicle. Great 90,000 mile Cadillac ! You do know why, right ? working at the Cadillac dealer all of those years, you know why ! like over 90% of those years , lets say 1998 late ish to 2000 late ish, GM changed the NorthStar Block, and those head bolts pull out ( not some of them, MOST of them ) left her stranded on the road, 70 year old woman, my dad died at 54, so I get a call.
So now we got 2 TWO, Cadillacs under 100,000 miles, head bolts and transfer case chain. Both fixed, GM NOWHERE to be found , and NOT ONE WORD SAID !
So now we will move on.
Our 2004 CTS was setting the timing chain code, 3.6-V6 , you know again, MOST in those years need one, our 2004 CTS, 2009 Enclave, brothers Buick sedan 3.0-V6, every one !
BUT, BUT ours with the Mobile 1 made it 140,000+ miles, best GM vehicle we have owned, I mean that 1996 was a great car, but this 04 CTS looks great, RWD drives great, just great !
So now we move on.
We go to dealer, want to replace our 04 CTS, just love the looks of the 2014 CTS, and the ATS, we were thinking WOW look at these beautiful Cadillacs. So we test drive the CTS first, with a 2.0T dud,my wife saye too big and the get up and go got up and gone, compared to our CTS. Dealer says, you can get it in the 3.6 just like you have, wife says to big.
We move on to the ATS, again, beautiful vehicle, as we are test driving it I ask the sales man, is this the same transfer case as the SRX blah, blah, blah, we had to replace our blah, blah, blah, he says we never saw that trouble, I say well both me and my neighbor had them done. Long story short, we own a 2.0T AWD ATS Its called a Perform Collection, looking at the sticker as I type, $48,415.00 sticker.
AND THIS CAR IS JUNK, JUNK, and if you review them, the 2013 – 14 – 15 ish, JUNK
Transmission does not know what to do CUE screen replaced still has a mind of its own, junk and I could go on !
So we have OWNED, 5 FIVE Cadillacs and my moms 6 SIX, out of them 2 TWO have ran 100,000 miles relatively zero troubles. TWO out of SIX, with HORRIBLE customer support !
You say you don’t get it, I just told you !
My other uncle, after my moms deal, bought a Mercedes, His son A8 Audi, my sister, a Navigator, all get GREAT customer support, not GM, same cousin got a Toyota truck, same uncle a RAM truck, NO troubles, run and run and run and customer support.
So EVER IF the 2.0T dud, blah WAS the SAME ( and it is NOT as it is UNDER POWERED ) in the Cadillac line.
Cadillac has to convince those 137,000 + customers to come back, give us a chance, when the vehicles at Cadillac were 2 out of 6 made it 100,000 miles and every vehicle they have owned from the others have lasted 100,000 with GREAT customer support !
If you were a Cadillac owner, supporter, driver, buyer, instead of a Chevy Spark owner, you would not have to ask a Cadillac owner why people bought others. They just shake there head at me at the get togethers still driving this junk ATS.
Thank You !
Carry On !
lifelong: I’m trying to have the Christmas spirit with you. Trying to be nice and attempting to have a civilized conversation with you. But that doesn’t seem to be working and really doesn’t surprise me considering. Anyhow, you went on for a very long time talking about a lot………but almost nothing about other brands 2.0L or where these 137,000+ customers are going.
Just like someone who goes into a Cadillac dealership and doesn’t want/like the 2.0L can order or find one with a different engine, the same can be said about Audi and others. However, most of the cars on the Audi/MB/BMW lots will have the 2.0L as well and the customer would need to find or order one with a different engine. The process is the same for nearly all brands. Volvo, however, is not like that. You want a Volvo? You can have one with the 2.0L or you can walk. So instead of going into a rant about you, your wife, your mother and the massive sample base you have of around 10 +/- people, can you give an example of where these 137,000+ people are going? What are they buying? Are they getting something else without a 2.0L?
Dan Berning,
I to TRUELY mean no ill will to ANY other human. I would NEVER degrade ANYONE !
Just had to have some fun with a couple of you old boomers here !
But I answered your question. The 137,000 + customers are staying right where they are happy with the product they own, where they can get taken care of with some customer support ! They WILL NOT move BACK to Cadillac , for a CHEAPER ( no window ) less powered ( most others 2.0T has more power ), and ZERO customer support !
And IT IS just that SIMPLE, you are thinking way to hard, its that simple !
And when I say, you just don’t get it, that is what I mean. I do not mean anything bad or degrading toward you, you just will never get it, you simply can not !
The people at GM in Cadillac are in the same place !
That is why I thought the South African could fix it, and I still think he could have. yet GM is just to d4m CHEAP !
OK, OK, OK its like me, or even a poor black kid. I grew up in a town of 100 or less people. we ate wild game we killed to survive. heated our house with wood. at times did not even have electricity. No big deal right ? It was in the 80s, I am 52.
You could never get what its like, just like a poor black child in the inner city ! You will never get what is is like to have a billion dollars, you will never get it, you SIMPLY can’t ! It is NOT POSSIBLE !
And the SAME thing goes for Mark Ruess, He is a raw power guy ! He is not a luxury person, and the GM board should know this, Mary should know this, but nope just GM CHEAP !
Thank You !
Carry On !
And that’s just it, Dan Berning,
Why would ANY of the 137,000+ Cadillac customers walk into a Cadillac dealer ?
They are driving a 2.0T already, in another brand, what would lure them in ?
They just got screwed 4 times out of 6 with the last 6 Cadillacs and all Cadillac has to offer is the same thing they are driving, but with NO CUSTOMER SUPPORT !!!!
Sore the CT5 is a sharp car, with a piece of plastic where a window goes, A3-window, A4-window, Every Mercedes, man I could go on but why don’t you look, your the car salesman, how many luxury vehicles have a piece of plastic where a window belongs ?
So that’s 3 THREE things, Customer support, A more powerful 2.0T, and a f0cking window and not a piece of cheap plastic. And every one my uncles family have owned after Cadillac have made it 100,000 miles !
Like ChevyGuyLevi said, his parents Mercedes transmission did fail, yet it was 150,000 not 77,000 !
The Customer has spoken AGAIN, and GM just can’t get it !
Lure the customer back, with a f0cking window !
Lure the customer back, with a f0cking 2.7T – 10 speed or a 3.0TT – 10 speed, NOT a lower output 2.0T !
Come on back to Cadillac, where the customer support sucked, and the same 2.0T you have now has less power, but believe us, it will feel better with the 10 speed, yet not in the CT4 thats a * speed GM junk transmission where anyone can read anywhere its junk, its not a secret !
Why the h3ll would anyone come back to Cadillac ?
Thank You !
Carry On !
Lifelong,
You do know the difference between a kilometer and a mile don’t you? The bottom line is you bought the turd 2.0 so who’s to blame, Cadillac or you?
You see jofa, its the details that matter to some.
Why did you care if the 150,000 kilometers is not correct ?
Its still more than the 77,000 miles, correct ?
93,205.67 miles
My google assistant told me !
Details, Pennies, it matters to some, this detail mattered to you !
I have a 2015 2.0 T ATS. I LOVE THE ENGINE!!! Lots of power! Put your foot in it and WOW…. What kills me is GM has de tuned it twice whil calming to upgrade it??????????????? From 270 to 252 to 237! How pathetic.. I have driven the NEW WEAK 237 version and its a huge disappointment, Like much of GM a huge step backwards. OH I dont care that the lower torque comes in at lower RPM. Its a WEAK engine now!!!!!!!!!!!!
Merry Christmas all you Auto lovers out there !
Cadillac and GM !!!!!!
How about attributing the dismal sales to the fact that the profile looks like a 1980 Chevy Citation? Ouch, but the truth hurts…
