The Chevrolet Equinox is a compact crossover utility vehicle (CUV) that served as the successor to the Chevrolet Tracker and Chevrolet S-10 Blazer.
First Generation
2009 Chevrolet Equinox Sport
The first-generation Chevrolet Equinox was introduced at the 2003 North American International Auto Show, and later launched for the 2005 model year. Riding on the GM Theta platform – which was shared with the Opel Antara, Vauxhall Antara, Saturn Vue, Suzuki XL7 and Pontiac Torrent – the first-gen Equinox was originally positioned as more of a midsize crossover. Production took place at the GM CAMI plant in Ontario, Canada.
For the 2006 model year, General Motors gave the Equinox slight updates, which included extra badging and a recolored dashboard. The following model year, the first-gen Equinox received a redesigned instrument cluster.
As for powertrain, the 2005 Chevrolet Equinox was equipped as standard with the naturally aspirated 3.4L V6 LNJ gasoline engine, rated at 185 horsepower and 210 pound-feet of torque. Then, the 2008 and 2009 Equinox became available with the optional naturally aspirated 3.6L V6 LY7 gasoline engine, rated at 264 horsepower and 250 pound-feet of torque.
A five-speed automatic transmission was standard, while a six-speed automatic transmission was available with the LY7 V6 engine. FWD was standard, while AWD was optional.
Production of the first-gen Chevrolet Equinox spanned from the 2005 to 2009 model years, while the trim lineup of the 2009 Equinox ranged from LS, 1LT, 2LT, LTZ, and Sport.
Second Generation
2010 Chevrolet Equinox
The second-generation Chevrolet Equinox debuted at the 2009 North American International Auto Show, and later launched for the 2010 model year. Riding on a revised version of the same GM Theta platform used for the preceding generation – which it shared with the GMC Terrain, Cadillac SRX, Saab 9-4X, Opel Antara, Saturn Vue, Suzuki XL7 and Pontiac Torrent – the second-gen Equinox was once again positioned as a midsize crossover.
Production took place at the GM CAMI plant in Canada, the GM Oshawa plant in Canada, and the GM Spring Hill plant in Tennessee.
2013 Chevrolet Equinox
For the 2016 model year, General Motors gave the Equinox a mid-cycle refresh, which included an updated front fascia that featured a new grille design and headlights, along with new taillights. The interior was also given slight ergonomic enchainments.
As for powertrain, the 2010 Chevrolet Equinox was available with one of two engine choices, which included the naturally aspirated 2.4L I4 LAF gasoline engine, rated at 182 horsepower and 172 pound-feet of torque, and the naturally aspirated 3.0L V6 LF1 gasoline engine, rated at 264 horsepower and 222 pound-fete of torque. Then, for the 2012 model year, the LAF I4 engine was replaced with the naturally aspirated 2.4L I4 LEA gasoline engine, rated at a similar 182 horsepower and 172 pound-feet of torque. Finally, the LF1 V6 engine was supplanted by the naturally aspirated 3.6L V6 LFX gasoline engine for the 2013 model year, which was rated at 301 horsepower and 272 pound-feet of torque.
A six-speed automatic transmission was the sole transmission offering, while FWD was standard and AWD was optional.
2016 Chevrolet Equinox LT
Production of the second-gen Chevrolet Equinox spanned from the 2010 to 2017 model years, while the trim lineup of the 2017 Equinox ranged from L, LS, LT, and Premier.
Third Generation
2018 Chevrolet Equinox LT
The third-generation Chevrolet Equinox debuted in September 2016, and later launched for the 2018 model year. Now positioned as a compact crossover, the third-gen Equinox rides on the GM D2 platform – which it shares with the GMC Terrain and Buick Envision.
Production currently takes place at the GM Ramos Arizpe plant and the GM San Luis Potosi plant, both of which are located in Mexico.
2021 Chevrolet Equinox LT
For the 2022 model year, General Motors gave the Equinox a mid-cycle refresh, which included an updated front fascia that featured a new grille design and headlights, along with a slightly revised rear bumper and taillight layout. The trim lineup was also updated.
As for powertrain, the 2018 Chevrolet Equinox was available with one of three engine choices, which included the turbocharged 1.5L I4 LYX gasoline engine, rated at 170 horsepower and 203 pound-feet of torque, the turbocharged 2.0L I4 LTG gasoline engine, rated at 252 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque, and the turbocharged 1.6L I4 LH7 diesel engine, rated at 137 horsepower and 240 pound-feet of torque.
2022 Chevrolet Equinox RS
After the 2019 model year, the LH7 I4 engine was dropped, while the LTG I4 engine followed after the 2020 model year. Then, the turbocharged 1.5L I4 LSD gasoline engine replaced the LYX I4 engine for the 2023 model year to become the sole engine offering, and is rated at 175 horsepower and 203 pound-feet of torque.
A six-speed automatic transmission currently serves as the sole transmission option, while a nine-speed automatic transmission was previously offered as optional. FWD is standard and AWD is optional.
2022 Chevrolet Equinox Premier
Production of the third-gen Chevrolet Equinox is ongoing, and currently spans the 2018 to 2024 model years, while the trim lineup of the 2024 Equinox ranges from LS, LT, RS, and Premier.
