Toyota’s newest model, the Corolla Cross, joined the mainstream B-crossover segment this year to most likely replace the C-HR, which has performed poorly from a sales volume standpoint. During the second quarter, Toyota saw a combined 16,983 sales of the C-HR and Corolla Cross, for a seven percent segment share.

However, a strong argument can be made that the Kia Soul is not part of the segment in question, but rather competes one segment below based on its size and price point. Removing the Soul from the Hyundai-Kia total nets 38,452 deliveries for a combined 18 percent segment share, placing the Hyundai-Kia conglomerate to second place just behind GM.

The mainstream subcompact crossover segment contracted 27 percent to 224,029 units during Q2 2022, meaning Trailblazer sales underperformed the segment average.

The GM Authority Take

Though a fourth place finish for the Chevy Trailblazer among 20 entries during the second quarter of 2022 is a decent showing in such a crowded space, sales were still down 31 percent year-over-year.

The model’s somewhat lackluster performance was caused by limited supply as a result of production disruptions. Like most models in The General’s portfolio, limited retail supply is the result of ongoing global supply shortages, including but not limited to the well-publicized semiconductor microchip shortage. In fact, the Trailblazer was at a scant three days supply in early July (which is outside Q2 window). To address the microchip issue head-on GM, recently announced that it will have its own family of microchips locked in by 2025, a move that is expected to offset future chip-related production delays. Furthermore, GM will expand production of the Trailblazer for the U.S. and Canada. Meanwhile, 2023 Chevy Trailblazer production started on April 24th for both of the aforementioned markets.

For its part, Chevy’s subcompact crossover has proven to be popular among buyers, and offers unique models – from the sporty RS to the off-roady Activ trim. Just this past September the Trailblazer earned its highest-ever share in the segment, and the model continues to receive top ratings. In November 2021 the Trailblazer received a perfect reliability rating by Consumer Reports. This was followed by the 2022 Chevy Trailblazer earning a  2022 Top Safety Pick+ award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety the following February, itself following the same award from IIHS back in September 2021 for the 2021 Chevy Trailblazer.

Consistent production as well as additional production capacity will be key to increasing sales of the Bow Tie brand’s top-rated small crossover. Luckily, Chevrolet along with its parent, General Motors, are working at doing just that.

  1. The sales are a direct result of no inventory. Here in Canada, the 5-6 larger retailers in my area have had no inventory since the start of the year. Its amazing that sales are as good as they are.
GM is sending all of their chips to Full size trucks and SUV. Unless you want a pickup or FS SUV, there is virtually nothing new available on GM lots . Hopefully they can secure more ships going forward

  2. We all fully understand that the micro-chip issue along with a few other things are causing really bad inventory problems. Thus sales numbers like this mean little. With that said, I found something that struck me when looking down the list of vehicles and the sales numbers. People really gravitate more towards the latest and greatest thing to come out. I can’t say for the HR-V if or how many of those sales came from the newly re-designed one, but that has to do with some of it. But look at the Jeep Compass sales. They were in the tank just a month or two ago. Now it’s way up and that must be due to the re-designed model. Now take the Trailblazer and Encore GX. Both are about two years old and maybe sales are slowing already?

But yes, it’s more about the lack of inventory.

    1. The Trailblazer and it’s GM-SAIC 3 cylinder were DOA. Lowercase gm has abandoned it’s entry level and economy vehicles… It’s a bold strategy, that will inevitably come back to bite them. Toyota and Kia are just slowly clawing away market share with these vehicles.

  3. Shortages will erode consumer loyalty which GM needs as market share drops due to added competition.
FIAT 500X being in last place isn’t fair. Drove it on rental, it was actually an enjoyable, engaging drive compared to Ford’s offerings. On ice hff angled better th as n many makes
