The segment forerunners were the Honda HR-V in first, Hyundai Kona in second, and the Trailblazer’s platform mate – the Buick Encore GX – in third.

Meanwhile, Hyundai (Kona and Venue) and Kia (Seltos, Niro, Soul) saw 82,146 deliveries. The figures give GM 26 percent of the segment, equal to 26 percent for Hyundai-Kia and more than the 10 percent for Stellantis (previously Fiat Chrysler Automobiles).

However, a strong argument can be made that the Kia Soul is not part of the segment in question, but is rather in a segment below based on its size and price point. Removing the Soul from the Hyundai-Kia results nets 60,557 deliveries for a 19 percent share.

The mainstream subcompact crossover segment expanded just under 55 percent to 308,490 units during Q2 2021.

The GM Authority Take

After placing toward the bottom of the pack in Q3 2020, Chevy Trailblazer sales took a leap in Q4 to become the fifth-best-selling model in the segment despite also being the newest, while also facing internal competition from the more affordable Chevy Trax. Trailblazer slaes then continued to climb in Q1 2021, taking second place in the segment. The model placed fourth in its segment during Q2 2021.

We attribute the continued growth in Q2 to better availability of the vehicle at the dealer level, though inventory has not yet reached optimal levels.

Going forward, we expect Trailblazer sales and market share to continue growing, especially in the near-term future as inventory begins to improve during 2021 and beyond. Assuming that supply can keep up with demand, we expect the Trailblazer to continue to hold one of the top-selling spots in the subcompact crossover segment, and for GM to continue being the best-selling purveyor of vehicles in the space.

About The Numbers

  • All percent change figures compared to Chevrolet Trailblazer sales in Q2 2020, unless noted otherwise

  • South Korea sales figures reflect actual vehicle registrations rather than wholesales
  • China sales figures represent retail deliveries and not wholesales

  1. Amazing Buick thrives in this segment with Chevrolet just behind making GM dominate the segment with only 4 entries (two already paid for) vs Hyundai-Kia greater efforts.

    1. Ummm ok, but when you add the Civic, Corolla, Elantra, and Forte sales to the totals of the Koreans and Japanese makes it becomes apparent that gm is woefully behind in the segment. If you think that crossovers aren’t cross shopped with sedans you are delusional and gm has nothing to offer there.

      1. Se Kia is better…….😉

      2. Agreed, plus … when it’s all you offer, no 2-door coupes or sedans either … naturally it will show a sales increase. Both Ford an GM need to be watching Hyundai an Kia, they are coming up thru the ranks with great vehicles. I drive Fords, but people in my age bracket (55 to 65) are buying Kia Souls and Hyundai Venues, and the comparable SUV’s to the Trail Blazer are doing well too. I am waiting for the Maverick to start showing up, then two Ford Hybrids will be at my home.

  2. GM actually has 24.6% vs Hyundai/Kia 26.6% of the segment.

    1. fudging the numbers is a new thing lowercase gm does to hype their stocks. While other manufacturers post monthly sales directly to their media site, lowercase gm only posts quarterly numbers to their secret sources.

      1. How are they “fudging the numbers”?. H/K is killing the Stinger and non-N Veloster, that wouldn’t happen if they were selling. No one but you cares about superficial choices that’s non making money.

  3. Funny how the Buick Encore GX gets trashed as being overpriced and still outsells Trailblazer.

  4. Let’s face it, 2020 numbers are just an anomaly due to ongoing production and delivery issues. You can’t say it is a valid increase – anything produced in 2021 is catch up for waiting orders and previous stalled production from prior quarters. No parts = low production, parts in = increased completed sales as production increases when the parts arrive and production restarts. I ordered a trailblazer in June. Was told a four month wait to produce. But hey that’s an improvement on my 16 month wait for the C8 that I just went through

  5. LOL 23k? Is this the GM’s Bet? Toyota sells this amount of Corolla in 2 weeks.

  6. This is doing well because it takes the place of a small car that disappeared and filling that void.

  7. Guys keep forgetting GM makes tons of sedans just not here, the same with Ford. Whine if you want if some compact car isn’t available anymore but why not make more money selling more CUVs than cars in certain markets?.

  8. Saw a display model at the base of the Winter Park, CO resort. 31k with a 3 cylinder engine, 26 mpg city. No thanks. Bought a 2020 Ford Escape Hybrid, 31k sticker 24.9k after dealer discount. 2.5 liter Hybrid power train, 200hp, and 43 mpg in the city. GM doesn’t even come close. Surprised they sell as many of these as they do. Couldn’t image driving one in the mountains. At least Ford is trying to compete. The new Maverick truck is great idea. Crickets from GM.

  10. Stelios is beautiful. Looks high end and the sort of design I’d expect from VW or Opel. Was surprised to find it cheaper than Trailblazer. CX-30 is another beautiful vehicle.
Trailblazer is nice, so is Encore GX, but it is a crowded market. Barra has managed to make Chevrolet a top 3 brand in the main segments but an opportunity is wasted with GMC to take on and best Renegade or Compass.

  11. Trailblazer is a hit but Blazer is a dud that will be eaten alive by Bronco. Blazer is Pontiac reborn: all style but little substance! Ironic how these connected vehicles have been viewed so differently.
Selling approximately 20,000 a quarter, even af a premium, is disappointing especially when the segment ideally should have been filled by GMC with Terrain. GMC, as of late, lacks any sense of direction sans Hummer.
