The GM Authority Take

Thanks to the continued increase in sales volume, Chevy Suburban and Tahoe sales in the third quarter allowed the Bow Tie brand to maintain its long-standing position as the undisputed sales leader in mainstream, full-size SUV sales.

We attribute the healthy growth in Chevrolet Suburban and Tahoe deliveries during Q3 to the following factors:

Going forward, we expect Chevy Suburban and Tahoe sales to continue to increase and gain segment share, given that production/supply remains uninterrupted. However, the fight won’t be entirely easy, as a result of the following factors:

  1. Updated rival products: Ford has refreshed the Expedition for the 2022 model year, delivering updated an exterior and interior, along with a new off-road-oriented Expedition Timberline model plus a hot-to-trot Expedition Stealth High Performance Package
  2. All-new segment entrants: FCA Stellantis has entered the segment with the Jeep Wagoneer, an all-new model that presents a threat to Chevy’s dominance in this space

About The Numbers

  • In the United States, there were 77 selling days in Q3 2021 and 77 selling days in Q3 2020
  • Ford Expedition sales figures include sales for regular-length Expedition and extended-length Expedition Max

  1. What can make a transmission shudder very bad? I have a 2021 Yukon that startd doing that at 8000 prox miles. The fluid was changed and it still shuddered, The torque converter next and then the transmission. It still shudders but not as bad. I will make you jump in the seat. GM is doing this under warranty and have given me no problem. Just asking for my info.

  2. I have a feeling the numbers would be 2X if they had product. I checked my car’s selling dealers website. They had 3 tahoe’s and 5 Yukons. No suburbans. When I bought my car from them in dec ’19, I recall walking by rows of tahoe’s/Yukons. They probably had 60 or 70 in total. Maybe more. I recently got my oil changed at the caddy dealership in town. They had 5 new vehicles to sell. 3 XT5’s, a ct4 and a XT4. 0 Slades. I was chatting the the sales guy. He had 160 slade’s on order. 8-12 month delay from order to receipt. They had even moved a couple dozen used cars to the new car area just so people would know they were open. During normal times, I’d see 30+ new Escalades on their lot.

  3. This is well deserved for General Motors. They’ve put a lot of development into these new SUVs, and they’ve knocked it out of the park with these new models. The updates that they’ve received for 2022 will only elevate them even higher in the full-size SUV segment.

While they may have stiff competition from Ford and now Jeep, they’ll continue to lead the segment for years to come.

While the Jeep Wagoneer is a fine addition to the body-on-frame SUV class, it’s exterior is not that impressive to look at, with the exception of its lavish interior.

The updated Ford Expedition’s cabin redesign, however, is not impressive at all. The giant portrait screen breaks up the flow of the interior lines and the aspect ratio for CarPlay/Android Auto and the backup camera is incorrect, not to mention it’s still basically a carbon copy F-150 interior (F-150 Lightning interior, that is). But the shockingly inadequate cargo space in even the Expedition Max is a deal breaker for me.

  4. Americans love to virtue signal, spouting off endlessly over climate change and the urgency to “save the planet” but at the end of the day, most are as shamelessly full of sh!t and confused as Dementia Joe. What y’all are buying sure as Hell doesn’t align with what you’re selling…

    1. I agree. America has a bad problem with trying to look virtuous and morally upright about things they don’t really care about. At least I can proudly say I don’t pretend to give a rat’s ass. You bet if I want a Suburban, I’m getting a Suburban. It is what it is. It’s my money and my car. I don’t care.

  5. Suburban, Tahoe, Yukon and Escalade keep the lights on at GM Ren Center. The brand loyalty is amazing, Ford can’t come up with a game changing rival, but Wagoneer will be interesting.

Chevy may be a little weaker in midsized (Nox) and large (Traverse) than Toyota and Ford but no one makes better body on frame SUVs and trucks.
