Competitive Sales Comparison (U.S.)

Despite the decline in the volume of units sold, Chevy Suburban and Tahoe sales continued to dominate the segment during the third quarter of 2020 in the United States, with a combined 30,669 units sold, comprised of 23,121 units of the Tahoe and 7,548 units of the Suburban. The Ford Expedition took second place in the segment with 19,402 deliveries (see running Ford Expedition sales), ahead of the Tahoe/Suburban’s corporate cousin – the GMC Yukon – in third place (see running GMC Yukon sales). It’s worth noting that Expedition sales figures include those of the regular-length Expedition (a Tahoe competitor) and the extended-length Expedition MAX (a Suburban competitor), while Chevrolet Suburban and Tahoe sales are reported separately.

Taking into account the Tahoe, Suburban and Yukon, GM accounted for a dominant 64 percent segment share during the quarter.

The full-size mainstream SUV segment contracted nearly 17 percent to 70,646 units in Q3 2020, meaning combined Suburban and Tahoe sales were in line with the segment average.

The GM Authority Take

Despite the decrease in volume, Chevy Suburban and Tahoe sales in the third quarter enabled the Bow Tie brand to maintain its long-standing status as the undisputed sales leader in the mainstream, full-size SUV segment. That feat is impressive, as Q3 was the quarter where Tahoe and Suburban inventory was at its lowest.

We attribute the drop in Chevrolet Suburban and Tahoe deliveries during Q3 primarily to the launch of the all-new 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe and 2021 Chevrolet Suburban. Though the all-new models are arriving on the ground, inventory of both models was extremely tight during the third quarter. Going forward, we expect Chevy Suburban and Tahoe sales to increase substantially once supply levels improve.

About The Numbers

  • All percent change figures compared to Chevy Suburban and Tahoe sales in Q3 2019, unless noted otherwise
  • In the United States, there were 77 selling days in Q3 2020 and 76 selling days in Q3 2019
  • Ford Expedition sales figures include sales for regular-length Expedition and extended-length Expedition MAX

  1. Be Interesting to see if these popular guys survive the EV assault?

    1. Be interesting to see if the EV assault even takes off. I’m sure it’ll have its fans, but nearly everyone I’ve ever talked to has said they aren’t interested. And I have to agree. As soon as they figure out how to make EVs operate identically to gas vehicles… as in, driving for averages of four- to six-hundred miles, and being recharged in a matter of minutes as opposed to hours… I’ll be fine with it. Until then, no go.

      1. The average ICE car has a 300 mile range. EVs are there now. It may only take 30 minutes to charge your car and that can perfectly be accomplished while you eat at a rest stop.

        1. Problem is it fine on paper until you have to road trip in one, ask the people waiting in a line of Teslas for a charge at a rest stop in ’19.

A recent summer trip I was doing 80-90+mph with the a/c on for a few hundred miles, still didn’t have much time to stop once I got to my destination, 2 gas stops were about 20 min in total.

I’m for E/Vs but it will be a while before they can meet ICE availability standards.

        2. Yeeeaaahhh… That all sounds a lot easier in text than it really is, but given how road trips usually turn out to be in practice, I’m just not sold. What I have right now is a 15 Traverse, and it usually gets closer to 400 on the long cruises before the “gas, please, moron” message comes on. I don’t always stop to eat, either. That’s usually every other stop, at about 400, and it doesn’t take a half hour. Like I said, until EVs are identical, or much closer to gas, I’m fine without it.

  2. The new Suburban and Tahoe are great as always, and should hold on to their full-size SUV market share and sales leadership for years to come. However, expanded availability of the 6.2 Liter V8 for the lower trim levels would be a nice addition.

  3. Plus the ugly front bumper clip which appears to be impacted from a crash make the 2020 vehicle look ugly and unattractive to buys. The front bumpers appears to have been in a motor vehicle accident. Not a great choice on design.
