Of the 15 nameplates that make up GM crossover sales, nine experienced an increase and six saw a decrease in overall sales volume. The nine models to experience growth were the Buick Enclave, Encore GX, Envision, Cadillac XT4 and XT6, Chevy Bolt EV, Trailblazer and Traverse, along with the GMC Acadia. Meanwhile, the Buick Encore, Cadillac XT5, Chevy Trax, Equinox, and Blazer, plus the GMC Terrain were the six models that were in the red.
The substantial percentage gains posted by the Encore GX and Trailblazer were caused by low sales volume during the year-ago quarter as a result of limited inventory of both models due to their launch cadence. Comparatively, the older Encore and Trax models experienced substantial declines as part of GM’s strategy to curtain their production in favor of the newer Trailblazer and Encore GX.
Nearly every Buick crossover experienced sales growth with exception of the aging Encore. The 51 percent jump in Envision sales is commendable, and are likely the result of two factors: healthy incentives on the outgoing, 2020 Envision along with the arrival of the sharp second-generation model, which is all-new. See more on the 2021 Envision.
Meanwhile, the Cadillac XT4 and XT6 luxury crossovers continue to gain traction in their respective segments, though their success appears to hinder the growth of the middle child, the XT5. That said, more XT5 units were sold than either the XT4 or XT6, despite an overall drop in XT5 sales.
The Chevy Traverse continued to hold its own, increasing its segment share by three percentage points compared to the year-ago quarter. Meanwhile, both the Equinox and Blazer struggled, losing market share by six and two percent, respectively. Notably, the Equinox will be refreshed for the 2022 model year (see more about 2022 Chevy Equinox). The updates were initially planned for the 2021 Equinox, but were delayed due to business complications associated with COVID-19. The updates should help boost sales in the coming quarters.
While the GMC Terrain gave up four percent of its market share, the Acadia was able to grow its share one percent. It’s worth highlighting the fact that the Acadia underwent a mid-cycle refreshed for the 2020 model year, while the Terrain’s refresh – like that of the Equinox – was delayed until the 2022 model year (see more about 2022 GMC Terrain). As such, we expect Terrain sales to gain momentum with the arrival of the renewed model.
It’s also worth noting that GM’s crossover portfolio is set to expand by one model in the immediate future with the arrival of the Chevrolet Bolt EUV, which will arrive as the 2022 Bolt EUV. The Bolt EV, with which the EUV shares its GM BEV2 platform, saw a commendable climb in sales of nearly 54 percent. The Bolt EV will undergo a mid-cycle refresh for the 2022 model year, which will give it many of the updates in store for the EUV (see more about 2022 Bolt EV).
