Competitive Sales Comparison

Chevrolet Trax sales performance during the first quarter of 2020 places the crossover in second place in its competitive set, just behind the Jeep Compass by 1,578 units. That means that the Trax outsold all remaining segment contenders, including the Honda HR-V, Hyundai Kona, the Trax’s platform mate – the Buick Encore (see Buick Encore sales), Jeep Renegade, Nissan Kicks, Ford EcoSport (see Ford EcoSport sales), Mitsubishi Outlander, Toyota C-HR, Kia Seltos and Niro, Hyundai Venue, the Buick Encore GX, Mazda CX-3 and the Fiat 500X.

On a segment share basis, the Trax accounted for 15 percent of the segment, just behind the 16 percent commanded by the Compass but ahead by five percentage points of the next best-selling model – the Honda HR-V, which had 10 percent share. All other rivals held a segment share of less than 10 percent.

Looking at the sales figures from a manufacturer level reveals that

GM’s cross-town rival, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, fields three offerings in this segment – the Jeep Compass, Jeep Renegade and Fiat 500X. The trio accounted for a very impressive 44,267 deliveries during the quarter. Meanwhile, the four GM offerings – the Chevrolet Trax and Buick Encore, as well as their all-new cousins – the Chevrolet Trailblazer and Buick Encore GX – accounted for a cumulative 45,084 deliveries. As such, GM outsold FCA by 817 units, representing the third time that The General sold more units than FCA since the latter launched the second-generation Jeep Compass. GM held a combined 24 percent segment share to FCA’s 24 percent.

The mainstream subcompact crossover segment contracted 8 percent to 189,525 units during Q1 2020, with the Trax significantly outpacing that contraction.

The GM Authority Take

The 15 percent growth in Chevrolet Trax sales bucks the trend of the entire segment and gives GM a leading position in the space. Moreover, the Trax somehow managed to defy the COVID-19 pandemic and post a very healthy volume growth.

For the immediate future, we can expect declining Trax sales as the industry as a whole takes a hit due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, once things return to normal, we expect GM to dominate this segment even more, as the Trax is joined by the all-new Traiblazer in a two-vehicle strategy. The new Chevrolet Trailblazer started to go on sale at the end of Q1, delivering 3 units during the final days of the quarter.

  1. The Chevrolet Trax is a cute CUV as it doesn’t pretend to be something it isn’t, it’s not much different than entry level cars like the discontinued Cruze as the Trax is the first car for a lot of buyers.

  2. Trax is a solid offering. It will remain in the GM Covid-19 line up because it’s inexpensive and not junk.

Encore’s decline confuses me. It, along with GX, are better than some luxury offerings. I’m guessing this is about less discounts.

Btw, why do people hate 500X? I had it as a rental in a snow storm and enjoyed the commute.
