Competitive Sales Comparison
Chevy Trax sales were very healthy during the first quarter, enabling the small crossover SUV to land in third place in its competitive set in terms of overall sales volume, behind the Jeep Compass (see Jeep Compass sales) in first and the Trax’s corporate cousin, the Buick Encore (see Buick Encore sales). It’s worth noting that both of those models saw sales decrease during the first quarter.
The Trax outsold all other rivals, including the Honda HR-V, Hyundai Kona, Jeep Renegade (see Jeep Renegade sales),Toyota CH-R, Ford EcoSport (see Ford EcoSport sales), the new Nissan Kicks, Mitsubishi Outlander Sport, the new Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross, Kia Niro, Mazda CX-3 (see Mazda CX-3 sales), Fiat 500X (see Fiat 500X sales), and the discontinued Nissan Juke.

GM’s cross-town rival, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, fields three offerings in this segment – the Jeep Compass, Jeep Renegade and Fiat 500X. The trio accounted for a very impressive 56,279 deliveries during the quarter. Meanwhile, the two GM offerings – the Chevy Trax and Buick Encore – accounted for a cumulative 49,186 deliveries. As such, FCA outsold GM by 7,493 units during the period. GM held a 22.8 percent market share while FCA held an even higher 26.1 percent. Individually, the Trax and Encore each commanded an 11 percent segment share.
It’s also worth noting that the Trax significantly outperformed the average segment growth rate during the quarter, growing 20 percent while the segment grew an average 17 percent.
To reiterate, the subcompact mainstream crossover segment expanded 17 percent during Q1 2019 to 215,492 units.
The GM Authority Take
Going forward, we expect Trax sales volume to remain healthy, but will continue to be threatened by newer segment rivals, including the Ford EcoSport, Nissan Kicks, Jeep Compass, Honda HR-V, Toyota CH-R, Kia Niro and Hyundai Kona.
The Trax is now the oldest vehicle in the segment, and Chevy recently revealed the completely overhauled (redesigned and reengineered) replacement. That model will be called the Chevrolet Trailblazer in China, and the name is expected to carry over to North America.
Once the all-new, second-generation Trax Trailblazer completes its rollout, we expect GM to sell even more units of the new vehicle, realizing an even higher market share in the mainstream subcompact crossover space.

About Chevrolet Trax
The Chevrolet Trax is a subcompact crossover utility vehicle. It slots below the Equinox as Chevrolet's smallest CUV and rides on the GM Gamma 2 platform shared with the Chevrolet Sonic/Aveo and Buick Encore. The model was Chevrolet's first offering in the subcompact (B segment) crossover space and the second (after the Nissan Juke) to launch in its segment in the U.S. market.
Having launched for the 2015 model year in the U.S., the Trax received a refresh for the 2017 model year that consisted of all-new front and rear fascias, the replacement of the LTZ trim by the new range-topping Premier model, revised interior, a new infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, and more.
The 2018 Chevy Trax represents the fourth model year of the first-generation Trax and receives several changes including three new exterior colors, a new Trax Redline Edition model, and several equipment-level changes. The 2019 Trax got three new exterior colors and a new Premier badge on the tailgate. The 2020 model is expected to be the last model year of the current, first-generation Trax before an all-new, second-generation model arrives.
The Trax, which is called the Chevrolet Tracker in some markets like South America, Russia and the CIS, is built at the following GM plants:
- GM Bupyeong factory in Bupyeong-Gu, South Korea operated by GM Korea - supplies Eurasia, North America and Holden Trax to Australia/New Zealand
- GM San Luis Potosi factory in San Luis, Mexico operated by GM Mexico - supplies North America
- GM Dongyue South in Yantai, Shandong, China operated by GM China and SAIC - supplies China

The name change is dumb and hopefully not true. Maybe a sub model and that would be ok, but the Trax name has a following so changing it would be a bad call.
a bad call would be watching A Bee Movie without honey glazed popcorn
