A long-standing automotive rivalry involves Chevrolet vs. Mopar, which today includes the Dodge, Ram, Chrysler, and Jeep brands. While it’s not quite the drag out fight of Chevy vs Ford, Dodge/Mopar still represent a healthy rivalry within the Detroit Big Three, and so it is a sales battle worth shedding light one, which is what we’ll do here today for the second quarter of 2024.
During Q2 2024, total Chevy sales in the U.S. market were flat at 452,111 deliveries. Meanwhile, the four Mopar brands posted a total of 342,185 deliveries, outsold by the Bow Tie brand by 110K units.

As has been the case for a long while now, the Chevy Silverado was again the Bow Tie brand’s best-selling model by a wide margin, netting 148,916 units to account for a third of overall sales. Comparatively, the most popular Mopar model was the Silverado’s direct rival, the Ram Pickup, which posted 90,109 deliveries during the quarter. The Ram Pickup accounted for just over a quarter of overall Mopar sales. The two full-size truck lines continue to represent the brands’ bread-and-butter from sales volume and financial standpoints.

Meanwhile, the Chevy vehicle experiencing the largest sales growth was far and away the all-new Trax, up a whopping 153 percent, which has become a best-seller for GM overall, beating out all utilities across its four automotive brands this quarter. Next up was the Colorado, with a 35 percent bump in sales. The rest of the Bow Tie brand’s field posted either modest growth or saw sales drop. Notably, all-electric Bolt EV and Bolt EUV sales are combined this quarter under the Bolt EV line item.
For Mopar, the Jeep Wagoneer posted the biggest growth at 107 percent, followed by the Dodge Hornet at 66 percent, and the Jeep Grand Wagoneer at 24 percent. These were actually the only Mopar models in the green.
All four Mopar marques saw sales fall, with Dodge down 17 percent, Ram down 26 percent, Chrysler down 19 percent, and Jeep down 19 percent.
Sales of both brands are impacted by dropping sales of discontinued models. For Chevy, that includes the Bolt EV and EUV, though a next-gen Chevy Bolt EV is on the way, along with the Camaro, till a next-generation Chevy Camaro arrives. For Mopar, that means the Dodge Caravan, Challenger, Charger, and Viper; the Chrysler 200 and 300; the Jeep Cherokee and Renegade, which is set to return for the 2025 model year; and the ProMaster City compact van. The Challenger will be indirectly replaced by the first-ever 2024 Dodge Charger Daytona, for which GM has no rival and can’t really build one, either. However, EV sales for Chevy, and new models from Mopar, can balance out the exits.

Since GMC models are often cross-shopped against Chevy models, with GMC even taking some sales away from Chevy as the two serve overlapping segments, then including those two GM marques here makes sense (though Chevy and Mopar fans may take issue with that). Doing so puts GM far ahead of Mopar by nearly 270K units, with Chevy and GMC sales combining for 611,696 deliveries to Mopar’s 342,185.
Overall winner: Chevy
Cars
Chevy vastly outsold Dodge and Chrysler, the only Mopar brands in the U.S. selling cars, by nearly 18K deliveries in the passenger car segment during Q2 2023. Chevy car sales in the U.S. fell 20 percent to 47,430 units, mostly due to the discontinued Camaro. Corvette sales were up, slightly, as GM continues to be challenged keeping up with demand for “America’s sports car.” The Malibu remains the sales volume leader for Bow Tie brand cars.

Car sales winner: Chevy
Crossovers
In the lucrative crossover market – one mostly displaced by traditional cars – Chevy again outsold Mopar during Q2 2024, this time over by over 46 deliveries. Chevy crossover sales grew by just one percent to 178,937 units, while Mopar crossovers fell 23 percent to 136,882 units. In this space we’re also including the two minivans sold by Mopar in the U.S., namely the discontinued Dodge Caravan and Chrysler Pacifica, which additionally offers a plug-in hybrid variant.
We include those two models because only a handful of minivan models are sold in the U.S. at this point and specifically the Caravan and Pacifica are the only two by domestic brands. Like the crossovers, minivans similarly are upright unibody vehicles designed to move people and their stuff. They differ by having sliding rear doors instead of regular opening ones, and are usually taller inside than crossovers, but similar enough in most other aspects.

Notably, the first and second generation of the Dodge Durango was a body-on-frame SUV and will once again revisit that form for its upcoming and likely last fourth generation, reportedly based on the Jeep Wagoneer platform. SUVs
Mopar again beat out Chevy in body-on-frame SUV sales due to the ongoing success of its Jeep Wagoneer and Wrangler, with the latter model actually outselling the Tahoe alone to put Mopar ahead of the Bow Tie brand in Q2 2024 by 23K units.
While Jeep is the only Mopar brand in the U.S. selling SUVs, the Dodge Durango will return to this space in the future as noted above.

However, throwing in Chevy’s corporate cousins into the mix that are cross-shopped by most of the same buyers, GMC SUV sales combined with those of the Bow Tie brand gave GM the edge with 58,347 deliveries, but still a little behind Mopar. Adding GMC models is perhaps most fitting in this space because the GMC Yukon Denali Ultimate trim more accurately competes with Jeep Grand Wagoneer including the extended-length Yukon XL and the Grand Wagoneer L, respectively. While the Wagoneer competes more directly with the Tahoe and Yukon including the extended-length Wagoneer L with the Suburban and Yukon XL, respectively, in regard to GMC Yukon trims below the Denali Ultimate.

Trucks
The biggest battle between Chevy and Mopar remains the full-size Chevy Silverado versus the Ram Pickup, which was previously marketed under the Dodge brand. In Q2 2024, Chevy outperformed Ram plus Jeep Gladiator truck sales combined, moving 179,436 units, up 10 percent, compared to the 100,598 Mopar deliveries, down 23 percent, selling over 79K more units. This space not only tracks full-size light duty and full-size heavy duty pickups, but midsize ones, too, along with medium duty commercial trucks.

Furthermore, the full-size truck competition alone also puts The General at the top in Q2 2024. Notably, Hummer EV Pickup sales include SUV sales this quarter, and are not broken out.

Vans
With just one offering, Chevy moved about half as many vans as Mopar, or just Ram in this segment, did in Q2 2024. The Chevy Express is an old vehicle tracing its roots to the 1990s and it, along with its GMC Savana corporate twin, remains the oldest model in its segment by a wide margin. Both of the GM models are offered as passenger, cargo, and cutaway/chassis cab variants.
In fact, the two vans are the oldest GM vehicles currently in production. Even though The General previously entertained plans to redesign the Chevy Express for the 2027 model year, keeping the ICE powertrain, it may have canceled any such plans.
Nevertheless, GM has sold more than 3 million Chevy Express and GMC Savana units to date.

EVs
Focusing solely on electric vehicles, only Chevy currently offers all-electric models, though Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge, and Ram parent Stellantis plans to launch several EV models in the near future, having already announced some of those.
During Q2 2024, Chevy EV sales were down 20 percent for 11,217 deliveries.

The GM Authority Take
Overall, Chevy outsold Mopar by 109,926 units during the second quarter of 2024. Adding in cross-shopped GMC models expands the spread in GM’s favor even further. All GM marques (Chevrolet, Cadillac, Buick and GMC) combined for 696,086 deliveries, meaning Mopar’s four brands (Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge and Ram) were outsold by The General two-to-one.
Both automakers have offered, debuted, or teased new, refreshed, and next-generation models for their ICE and EV portfolios, keeping the competitive pressure on one another. While the all-electric market has cooled a bit, the automotive landscape will eventually change, albeit more slowly than originally forecasted. Meanwhile, hybrids are the latest talk of the town, with Mopar already in the game and with more models on the way, while GM looks at providing its own answer in the form of plug-in hybrids as a way to bridge ICE and EV powertrain options.

I won’t drive another Stellantis product, even if it was given to me for free!
What’s sad is that at one time Jeeps and Dodges are all I wanted.
A year or two Charger is top on my list. GM doesn’t make cars anymore.
Those are some interesting statistics, but as a long-time retiree, I can not afford any of these new vehicles.
Agreed, us retirees are not going to be regular customers for all these expensive vehicles. Secondary problem would being able to afford repairs since most of us older people tend to keep our vehicles longer.
I think that is why values of GMT900s an K2XXs depending on the model year will go up……yes they have their known issues…but in 20-50 years time when everything is electric or hybrid, they will be regarded as classics.
There are 2 reasons why CDJR products are being outsold by Chevrolet. PRICE and QUALITY. Stellantis makes a poor quality product and requires more repairs than most auto brands. Also their resale value tends to be less.
Always has been that way since at least the 90’s. Back in the day Chrysler built pretty good products but not for a long time. Never had and never will. I drove Fords up until about 1980 then switched to GM. Ford screwed their vehicles up in 1980 with plastic trucks and ugly cars except for the Mustang. And of course Chrysler ruined the Jeep. The AMC CJ-5 with the 304 V-8 and manual shift was the last good Jeep.
The last good Jeeps were the 4.0 I6s even with their known issues…you could get 500k miles out of them. I used to like Jeep Wranglers, but stopped liking them, as Jeep catered to “female” stereotypes and to immature and childish young women……
I don’t think Stellantis physically ruined the jeep. They ruined it by pricing out all their potential customers. They tried to become a luxury automaker, which they are not and their quality is subpar.
I do agree. I hear many complaints about RAMS and other FCA cars here in Qatar…compared to GMC/Chevrolet.
Bought my first GM product in 21 years. A Corvette Z06. It’s everything I could have expected. Nice build quality and performance is stunning.
We also just bought a new SUV, a Honda Pilot Elite model. Looked at other brands but we were replacing a Honda Pilot which had been a really good vehicle. None of the competitors matched up. Stellantis products were really not competitive. Build quality was below average, interiors looked dated, it’s no wonder they have stacked up inventory.
Red ink? Please expand on that…
Winning against Dodge, Ram, Chrysler and Jeep is pretty easy these days. Both gm and Ford are holding their own sales-wise thanks in part to Stellantis sending their shoppers to both of them. Chevy a bit more than Ford when it comes to attracting their PU buyers.
Both Mary and Jim Farley owe Carlos Tavares a huge debt of gratitude for being so fundamentally clueless when it comes to the NA market. He appears to be on some sort of mission to single handedly destroy the Dodge, Ram, Chrysler and Jeep brands pronto.
It’s sad watching the rich history of those brands being destroyed so quickly. My sympathies to their employees.
