One of the longest-running rivalries in the automotive industry, Chevrolet vs. Ford, is still ongoing with no signs of abating. The American auto brands go head-to-head in many segments, both stateside and abroad, including the ever-growing all-electric vehicle market. One of the easiest ways to determine which of these two legendary marques is ahead in their rivalry is by looking at the raw Chevy vs. Ford sales figures, and that’s what we’ll do here for the second quarter of 2024.
During Q2 2024, total Chevy sales in the U.S. market were flat to 452,111 deliveries. Ford brand sales were also flat, moving 512,127 units, outselling the Bow Tie brand by 60K units.

Comparatively, the most popular Ford model was the Silverado’s primary rival, the F-Series, with 191,561 deliveries during the quarter. Similar to the Silverado, the F-Series accounted for over a third of overall Ford sales. The two full-size truck lines continue to represent the respective marques’ bread-and-butter from sales volume and financial standpoints.

Meanwhile, the Chevy vehicle to experience the largest sales growth was far and away the all-new Trax, growing a whopping 153 percent. The Trax has been a best-seller for GM overall, beating out all utility vehicles across its four automotive brands this quarter. The Colorado was the second-fastest to grow, growing 35 percent. The rest of the Bow Tie brand’s field posted either modest growth or a decline. Notably, all-electric Bolt EV and Bolt EUV sales are combined this quarter under the Bolt EV field.
For Ford, its EVs – the E-Transit, F-150 Lightning, and Mustang Mach-E – led the way in terms of growth. The Maverick slotted in among the growth leaders with an 81 percent jump in sales. Ford had more models in the green than Chevy.
Sales of both marques were impacted by dropping sales of discontinued models. For Chevy that includes the Bolt EV and EUV, though a next-gen Chevy Bolt EV is on the way, along with the Camaro, till a next-generation Chevy Camaro arrives. For Ford, the Edge and Transit Connect were dropped, and are in the red. However, EV sales, including those from new entries, balanced out the sunset models.

Since GMC models are often cross-shopped against Chevy models, with GMC even taking some sales away from Chevy as the two serve overlapping segments, then an argument could be made to include the two GM marques. Doing so puts GM ahead of Ford by nearly 100K units, with Chevy and GMC sales combining for 611,696 deliveries to Ford’s 512,127. Meanwhile, GM’s Cadillac luxury marque competes with FoMoCo’s Lincoln. Those sales are addressed in a separate sales analysis. GM’s Buick premium marque sits somewhere in-between.
Overall winner: Ford
Cars
Chevy vastly outsold Ford by nearly 34K deliveries in the passenger car segment in Q2 2024, primarily because the Bow Tie brand offers more models in this space. Chevy car sales in the U.S. fell 20 percent to 47,430 units, mostly due to the discontinued Camaro. Corvette sales were up, slightly, as GM continues to see challenges in keeping up with demand for “America’s sports car.” The Malibu remains the sales volume leader for Bow Tie brand cars.

Trucks
The biggest battle between Chevy and Ford continues to be the full-size Chevy Silverado versus Ford F-Series arena, with that rivalry most likely representing the biggest and longest standing one in U.S. automotive history beyond Camaro vs. Mustang. This space not only tracks full-size light duty and full-size heavy duty pickups, but midsize pickups, plus medium and heavy duty commercial trucks, too.
During Q2 2024, Chevy lagged behind Ford in terms of cumulative truck sales volume, moving 179,436 units, down two percent, compared to Ford’s 254,356 deliveries, up 15 percent, with 75K more deliveries.

Furthermore, the full-size truck competition alone also puts The General at the top in Q2 2024. Notably, Hummer EV Pickup sales include those of the SUV this quarter, and are not broken out.

Vans
With just one offering, Chevy moved about a sixth as many vans as Ford in Q2 2024. The Chevy Express is an old vehicle tracing its roots to the 1990s and it, along with its GMC Savana corporate twin, remains the oldest model in its segment by a wide margin – both offered as passenger, cargo, and cutaway/chassis cab variants.
In fact, the two vans are the oldest GM vehicles currently in production. Even though The General previously entertained plans to redesign the Chevy Express for the 2027 model year, keeping the ICE powertrain, it may have canceled any such plans.
Nevertheless, GM has sold more than 3 million Chevy Express and GMC Savana units to date.

Looking at electric vehicles, Chevy was vastly outsold by Ford during Q2 2024, as the Chevy Bolt family exits the market and new Bow Tie brand models arrived to take their place over the past year. Sales were consequently down 20 percent for 11,217 deliveries.

The GM Authority Take
Overall, Ford outsold Chevy by 60,016 units during the second quarter of 2024, as has been the case for many years now. However, adding in cross-shopped GMC models pushes GM out front to the tune of 100K more deliveries.
Furthermore, The General (Chevrolet, Cadillac, Buick and GMC) sold far more vehicles altogether than FoMoCo (the Ford brand plus Lincoln) during the same timeframe by 160K units. Specifically, GM posted 696,086 deliveries to FoMoCo’s 536,050 units. Sales of both companies were up less than one percent this quarter, or essentially flat.
Both Chevy and Ford continue to introduce new, refreshed, and next-generation models for their ICE and EV portfolios to confront competitive pressure from all avenues. While growth of the all-electric market has cooled, the automotive landscape will eventually change as it grows, albeit more slowly than originally expected. Meanwhile, hybrids are the latest talk of the town, with Ford having already pursued that angle for some time now, as GM is looking to launch its own in 2027 as a bridge between ICE and EV powertrain options.

Comments
These things happen when you have vehicles where none of your designs stand out, and you do not offer powertrain options that people want.
Tone deaf, with several doses of wrong.
First, Ford has been outselling Chevy for years, this is nothing new. GM almost always wins the raw sales volume race when you add Chevy and GMC together. This is just the way it is based on how GM’s business model is configured.
Beyond that, are you honestly suggesting that the Escape is a “stand out” design? How about that new for 2024 Mustang? In almost every segment, Chevy offers a better-looking product:
– Midsize trucks? Colorado wins hands down
– Electric vehicles? Blazer EV, Equinox EV, Silverado EV take it to the “Mustang” Mach-E and the reconfigured ICE truck called the F-150 Lightning
– Sedans? At least Chevy still offers one
– Compact crossovers? The new Equinox is way more attractive than the Escape.
– Midsize two-row crossovers: Blazer is here, while Ford discontinued the Edge
– Midsize three-row crossovers: the refreshed Explorer is good, but the new Travers is great
– Full-size trucks: both Chevy and Ford go head to head across the board, in similar yet different ways
– Sports cars? Corvette takes the cake
Notice how in all of these, Chevy has very good designs.
The only thing missing for Chevy is an affordable sports car (to rival Mustang), a compact pickup (to rival Maverick) and a midsize off-road SUV (to rival Bronco). Keep in mind Ford has no more sedans, no midsize two-row crossover, and no subcompact crossover(s). Ford continues to rest on its laurels, which is trucks, Explorer and vans… though Chevy is actually closing the gap in trucks and Explorer, and will probably eat up a good chunk of the vans market now that the BrightDrop van will now be under the Bow Tie channel. In all other spaces, Chevy outsells Ford. That’s reality.
Great points, but the glaring voids by GM can’t be dismissed: Vans – Brightdrop EV only won’t compete with Transit options, so gap will increase. Maverick – GM still MIA, while maverick sales continue to climb surpassing Colorado+Canyon by about 20k units already by 2Q and even outselling the Taco – I understand compact vs midsize, but scale matters and Ford is making more $/unit on the slightly lower priced Maverick. Most people don’t need a real truck. Then there’s the Bronco – another missed opportunity by GM. They should sell a Colorado/Canyon SUV (as they do in other markets) to at least try to compete with the Bronco and the new platform sharing 4Runner/Landcruiser that have reduced off road capability. To keep costs down, just keep the same frontend/dash, reduce wheelbase and cover the bed like Rivian R1S / R1T – how hard can it be, demand is there, especially with Toyota whiffing on the next gen 4Runner. As far as the Camaro, not worth the money/effort considering the low sales ceiling – maybe GM should have retained the C7 platform for the Camaro.
Ford has been struggling with sliding sales of their F-series trucks for years now. When will the bleeding end? Gm truck sales have been up consistently in 2023 and now 2024.
“Since GMC models are often cross-shopped against Chevy models, with GMC even taking some sales away from Chevy as the two serve overlapping segments, then an argument could be made to include the two GM marques. Doing so puts GM ahead of Ford by nearly 100K units, with Chevy and GMC sales combining for 611,696 deliveries to Ford’s 512,127. ”
Clearly vehicle buyers collectively prefer GM to Ford.
That was an awful lot of red for Chevy/GM to be winning. Especially in the SUV, CUV markets.
Tahoe and Suburban down, Yukon ‘up by gaining Yukon XL’ vs. Expedition being up. GM is obviously losing those sales to Ford – a segment GM typically dominates and a major portion of $$$. BIG RED FLAG.
Traverse, Acadia, Blazer, Trailblazer all down, and those are the heart of GMs CUV market. BIG RED FLAG.
Bright spot Terrain and Trax, good luck with those margins.
If I was GM I’d be worried. The only bright spot is picking up some truck sales from Stellantis misfortunes, they aren’t going to pick up anything else. Jeep buyers are going to more likely be drawn to the Bronco line if left to choose between a Ford or GM.
I think it is because Ford probably has more features for the Expedition and can sell it at discounts..but refreshed models of GMC/Chevrolet/Cadillac are right around the corner…so there is that.
But come to Qatar…the Expedition has NEVER sold well here for some reason, unlike the triplets, which were the only ones competitive with Nissan and Toyota.
Jeep buyers wouldn’t waste time with the Bronco. Ford failed when they went with IFS for what they wanted to position as a Jeep fighter.
Why no mention that Ford survives on F-series truck sales yet they’re losing sales while GM continues to post truck sales growth? Ford closing in on GM fullsive SUV sales is nothing compared to the proble. With F-series sales floundering year after year.
Chevrolet’s 2nd and 3rd best sellers (Trax and Equinox) have no units built in the USA! GM used to be an American Company, but now there largest assembly plant with the most workers is in Mexico. It is time for Americans to wake up and stop allowing GM to send more jobs to other countries when the products are all sold here. The answer is in your VIN number-If it begins with 3 you are buying a vehicle made in Mexico. If it starts with 2 you are buying a Canadian built vehicle. If it begins with 1 you are purchasing a USA built Vehicle with American workers. I have never purchased a vehicle from GM over the decades which were not built in the USA. By the way no discount for discounted labor costs on your sticker price!
