Full-Size GM Truck Sales Beat Ford By More Than 35K Units During Q2 2024

Solid performance of GM’s full-size pickup truck sales showed the payoff of updated lineups, new variants, and the addition of first-ever EV models. The ICE-powered Silverado (see running Chevy Silverado sales) and Sierra (see running  GMC Sierra sales), along with the all-electric Chevy Silverado EV (see running Silverado EV sales) and GMC Hummer EV Pickup (see running GMC Hummer EV Pickup sales) enabled The General to vastly outsell the Ford F-Series (see running Ford F-Series sales) by over 35K units.

The Blue Oval remains unable to dethrone GM as the best-selling manufacturer of full-size pickups in America. Additionally, GM handily outsold the Ram Pickup by over two to one.

Regarding EVs, GM’s models combined outpaced the Rivian R1T. The newest model here, the Tesla Cybertruck, jumped ahead of its all-electric competition, beating out the oldest all-electric model here, the Ford F-150 Lightning (see running Ford F-150 Lightning sales).

Looking Ahead

GM full-size truck sales, including those of the Chevy Silverado and Silverado EV along with the GMC Sierra and Hummer EV Pickup, saw strong demand yet again, outpacing cross-town rivals halfway through the year. More Silverado EV variants will launch this year, and the all-electric truck’s corporate cousin, the GMC Sierra EV, is now on sale with deliveries on the way, ready to compete in the truck space next quarter.

This will likely further expand General’s share of the full-size pickup truck segment, which has also been boosted by updated lineups and new variants of its traditional ICE-based offerings—which bodes well as full-size trucks are the automaker’s biggest money-makers.

About Chevrolet Silverado

The 2024 Chevy Silverado 1500 turbocharged 2.7L gasoline engine is called TurboMax. That engine now gets the Hydra-Matic 8L80 M5U revised eight-speed automatic transmission.

Also, the 2024 Silverado ZR2 offers the LZ0 Duramax diesel engine to provide more low-end torque while off-roading, joining the naturally aspirated 6.2L V8 L87 gasoline engine for available powerplants. That 6.2-liter will sound meaner thanks to a new Active Exhaust system. The 2024 Silverado ZR2 is also available with new beadlock-capable wheels and new black and red beadlock wheel decorative rings.

Meanwhile, the 2024 Silverado High Country will be available with the Midnight Edition Package. All trims of the 2024 Silverado 1500 offer a new drop-in bedliner and a new bed Utility Wall Package.

About Chevrolet Silverado HD

In the fall of 2022, GM unveiled the refreshed 2024 Chevy Silverado HD, which features new exterior styling, overhauled interior space, new tech like standard wireless CarPlay and Android Auto, safety features like Adaptive Cruise Control, and upgrades to the powertrain lineup.

The 2024 Chevy Silverado HD offers a new High Country Premium package that replaces the previous High Country Deluxe package, two new 22-inch wheel options, some of which are now available on more trim levels, and a new Midnight Edition package.

In April 2023, GM officially debuted the first-ever 2024 Chevy Silverado HD ZR2 and the new 2024 Chevy Silverado HD ZR2 Bison as the Bow Tie brand’s most capable heavy-duty off-roaders.

In January, GM unveiled the 2025 Chevy Silverado HD, which featured several updates and changes, the most notable of which is the highly anticipated new Trail Boss package.

The 2025 Chevy Silverado HD arrives with several important updates and changes, most notably the new 2025 Chevy Silverado HD Trail Boss, a package available on LT and LTZ trims. The 2025 Silverado HD Custom trim level will also offer a new Blackout Package.

Other changes for 2025 include reduced Midnight Edition availability, expanded park assist availability, standard adaptive cruise control on High Country trim levels, and a reshuffling of wheel options and paint colors.

About Chevrolet Silverado EV

The first-ever 2024 Chevy Silverado EV officially debuted at CES 2022, arriving in the well-equipped RST First Edition and fleet-focused WT trim levels. The 2024 Silverado EV 3WT gets a new fleet package with an even higher tow capacity.

The all-electric Silverado was engineered from the ground up to be exclusively an electric vehicle.

The RST trim level arrives with a long feature list, debuting as the RST First Edition. A Trail Boss trim will launch as a 2025 model. Other trims, such as a new Custom trim level that GM Authority was first to report about, as well as a High Country trim, are expected to join the lineup in the near future.

The RST First Edition features GM’s Adaptive Air Ride suspension as standard and four-wheel steering for improved maneuverability, like that of the Hummer EV Pickup.

The 2024 Chevy Silverado EV 3WT and 4WT deliver an estimated 393 miles and 450 miles of range from a full charge, respectively. The 2024 Silverado EV 4WT delivers true pickup truck capabilities with a maximum tow rating of 10,000 pounds and a maximum payload rating of 1,400 pounds.

Since then, the Silverado EV RST has achieved a 460-mile range in real-world testing.

About GMC Sierra 1500

The 2024 GMC Sierra 1500 turbocharged 2.7L gasoline engine is called TurboMax. That engine now gets the Hydra-Matic 8L80 M5U revised eight-speed automatic transmission.

Also, the 2024 Sierra AT4X offers the LZ0 Duramax diesel engine to provide more low-end torque while off-roading, joining the naturally aspirated 6.2L V8 L87 gasoline engine for available powerplants. That 6.2 liter gets a throatier exhaust note thanks to a new Active Exhaust system. The 2024 Sierra AT4X is also available with new beadlock-capable wheels and new black and red beadlock wheel decorative rings.

Also, the 2024 Sierra 1500 offers a new drop-in bedliner and a new bed Utility Wall Package.

About GMC Sierra HD

In October 2022, GM unveiled the refreshed 2024 GMC Sierra HD, debuting fresh exterior styling, a new interior, a revised trim level lineup, new tech like standard wireless CarPlay and Android Auto, safety features like Adaptive Cruise Control, and powertrain updates.

The updated 2024 GMC Sierra HD is highlighted by the arrival of the premium 2024 GMC Sierra HD Denali Ultimate, the pinnacle of heavy-duty trucks. For the first time, the Sierra HD offers massaging seats. Consequently, a new Denali Reserve Package replaces the Denali Ultimate Package offered on the 2023 model. Also, the 2024 Sierra HD offers two new 22-inch wheel options.

Last May, GM officially debuted the first-ever 2024 GMC Sierra AT4X and the new 2024 GMC Sierra HD AT4X AEV Edition as Big Red’s most capable heavy-duty off-roaders.

The 2025 GMC Sierra HD offers Front Park Assist as an option on the Pro and SLE trims, while Adaptive Cruise Control will be available on more trim levels, but the 2025 model won’t offer certain wheel choices.

About GMC Hummer EV Pickup

Production of the 2024 GMC Hummer EV Pickup began this past June, with the nameplate introducing a handful of significant changes and updates over the preceding 2023 model. That includes the launch of two entry-level trim levels, the 2X and 2, though GM Authority has learned that the “base” 2 trim has been dropped. Range-topping Edition 1 and 3X trims round out the all-electric Hummer off-road pickup truck lineup for the 2024 model year.

Another critical update for the 2024 Hummer EV Pickup is the introduction of the new Omega Edition, which won’t return for the 2025 model year. This limited-run variant includes a unique matte paint finish, unique wheels, and a few other unique accents.

Additionally, for 2024, the Pickup offers a new LPO-level or dealer-installed optional Lifestyle Adventure Package that provides camping capabilities for off-roaders and other outdoor enthusiasts. A step up from that is the new EarthCruiser, a variant of the Pickup designed to tackle overlanding adventures in zero-emission style.

The GMC Hummer EV has made the top 10 list of most popular luxury EVs.

About GMC Sierra EV

Over a year ago, GM also debuted the first-ever 2024 GMC Sierra EV Denali. The only variant built for the 2024 model year will be the Sierra EV Denali Edition 1. All other models, including the “regular” Denali, off-road AT4, and entry-level Elevation, will be offered for the 2025 model year.

Interestingly, the 2024 Acadia and Sierra EV are GMC’s first models to get GM’s new electronic shift lever.

In April, the Sierra EV Denali Edition 1 received a lower price and higher range estimate.

GM destroyed any goodwill they may have had years and years ago by building cheap, poorly built vehicles. I know this is anecdotal but it’s also not the first time I’ve heard it. People looking to buy new vehicles often leave out anything GM.
