Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)

Cadillac Lyriq sales during the first quarter of 2023 placed the electric crossover in second place in the electric luxury D-crossover segment when ranked by sales volume. The Tesla Model Y far outperformed the rest of this nascent space, posting a 99 percent leap to 105,500 units, while the Cadillac Lyriq (see running Cadillac Lyriq sales) followed in second with 1,348 deliveries. The Lexus RZ placed third with 932 sales, while the Audi Q8 e-tron took fourth with 779 deliveries. The Jaguar I-Pace posted a sales gain of 40 percent to 167 units, bringing up the last place in the space.

From a segment share standpoint, the Lyriq held a one percent share, as did nearly every other entry except the Model Y, which earned a dominant 97 percent segment share, down from a full 100 percent a year ago. The I-Pace earned less than a one percent share.

As a whole, the electric luxury D-crossover segment grew 105 percent to 108,726 units during Q2 2023, mostly due to growth posted by the Tesla Model Y.

The GM Authority Take

Cadillac Lyriq sales are slowly on the rise thanks to a ramp up in production. In fact, the Lyriq now has a cumulative 2,316 deliveries during the first half of the 2023 calendar year. Consequently Q2 2023 sales represent the Lyriq’s highest quarterly results in the U.S. market since launch.

That said, the Lyriq remains exponentially behind the Tesla Model Y in the sales volume race, entirely due to very limited availability as a result of extremely low production volumes.

Based on how many Cadillac Lyriq units were built so far this year, GM is selling its first luxury crossover as fast as it can make it. Production and resulting inventory are indeed the bottlenecks to higher sales. GM is now shipping more 2024 Cadillac Lyriq trim levels, and production of the 2024 Cadillac Lyriq got underway on May 4th.

The bottom line is quite simple: The General will need to ramp up Lyriq production substantially in order to make a serious dent in sales of the Model Y.

About Cadillac Lyriq

Introduced for the 2023 model year (albeit in very limited quantities), the Cadillac Lyriq stands as the luxury marque’s first entry into the budding EV market.

The 2024 Cadillac Lyriq arrives with several important changes and updates over the 2023 Cadillac Lyriq. Among these is the introduction of new trim levels, Tech and Sport, joining the Luxury trim level per Cadillac’s Y-trim level strategy. All three trim levels (Tech, Luxury, Sport) are available in the U.S. with either rear-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive. The all-new Cadillac Lyriq Sport AWD variant made its world debut in China.

The 2024 Cadillac Lyriq will be the first GM vehicle in North America to feature 5G network connectivity, standard on all trim levels. The 2024 Lyriq also gets a new power panoramic dual-panel sunroof along with a newly available Nappa Leather seating package, which is genuine leather made from calfskin or other types of soft cowhide. Smaller revisions can be found throughout, including the addition of the Rear Camera Mirror feature, 22-inch Dynamic Split Spoke Reverse Rim alloy wheels with a Polished Gloss Black finish, new paint colors and new seat colors, and – as GM Authority was first to report – flush mounted door handles.

Also expected for 2024 is the Cadillac Lyriq-V, a performance-focused variant with more power, more aggressive styling and standard all-wheel drive, along with upgraded suspension and brakes and unique badging.

Regardless of the trim level selected, 2024 Cadillac Lyriq maximum range-per-charge is 314 miles for rear-wheel-drive models, with motor output set at 340 horsepower and 325 pound-feet of torque, and 307 miles for all-wheel-drive models, with motor output set at 500 horsepower and 450 pound-feet of torque.

The all-electric luxury compact crossover rides on the GM BEV3 platform, while GM Ultium batteries pair with GM Ultium Drive motors for motivation.

  • This is a terrible article because the Tesla Model Y IS NOT A LUXURY ELECTRIC VEHICLE !

Stop posting this huge mistake! My Chevy Equinox has more luxury than any Tesla!

    • This is a terrible comment, because whether you like it or not, the Tesla Model Y is the vehicle to beat IN THIS SEGMENT.

Whether YOU think it deserves to be called a luxury vehicle is a different matter entirely. People are clearly voting with their wallets in buying the Model Y at prices similar to those carried by the Lyriq. Watch out for that thing called reality, it can sting sometimes.

      • Price Luxury. Tesla employs a lot of cost-cutting. The removal of buttons is one of them. A single driver information center is another. In their place, Tesla gives you better performance (0-60) and good range. Amenities aren't one of the things people normally mention when you talk about Tesla. Amenities are the things people associate with luxury.

  • If someone puts in an order in the 3rd quarter but will receive it in the 4th, is that order counted now or when they receive it in the 4th quarter?

    • GM doesn't count orders. A sale is complete once a vehicle rolls off the production line. Dealerships take "ownership" at that point.

      • YEA IT ROLLS OFF THE PRODUCTION LINE AND THEN DISAPPEARS FOR MONTHS. BEST ADVERTISEMENT IS SEEING THEM ON THE ROAD. NOT CAR SHOWS, NOT YOUTUBE AND NOT TV.

    • Just wait. With the pending UAW strike, GM CEO, Mary Barra, can blame dismal Q3 and some of Q4 numbers on it. The Lyriq will be lucky to hit 3,500 units for all of 2023.

  • If the Cadillac dealers keep putting a $10,000 upcharge on the Lyriq, it will soon be dead in the water... too much competition out there for EV if you want one.
I also agree the more of them you see on the road the more they will get new customers who want one.
What good is advertising if you put them out of the price range by dealer markups...

    • According to my dealer, Cadillac cracked down on dealers that were initially adding “market adjustments”, or unrequested dealer installed equipment packs, for cars that were ordered. Unlike Ford who did the same thing, GM actually enforced it by cutting future dealer allocations.

If someone ordered a car and later backed out, GM let the dealer do what they want to do with the selling price. It has been so long with a total blackout of information about when a car you ordered would actually arrive, that many people bailed out and bought other cars that are available.

The Lyrics sitting on dealer lots with prices over MSRP are those “order released” cars.

  • Customers who ordered 2023 model year Lyriqs but were switched to 2024 models are being given a $5,000 factory incentive. The dealer in my case is going to charge a “market adjustment” of — you guessed it — $5,000, so I’ll end up paying MSRP. Of course, during my long wait competitors are introducing new models, and if one those appeals to me and is available immediately, I could be persuaded to cancel my order.

  • Same happened to me. Placed reserve when it came time for me to order …ADM … I told them to keep vehicle and bought something else. GM lost a vehicle on the street until they get another sucker.. or reserve and Msrp goes up … games.

  • GM is never going to be competitive in the EV market if their “star”, the Cadillac Lyriq, if the production is only 20 cars per day. Tesla’s production exceeds that before lunch on one day!

    • I don't think the Cadillac Lyriq was ever supposed to be an everyone vehicle. That's why GM has Chevy, Honda has Acura, and Toyota has Lexus. One is their volume brand and one is their luxury brand.

One of the side effects of the way Tesla has done their models is they have to keep lowering the price of the S and X because the only thing they offer is increased size and unnecessary performance. Basically, the 3 and Y have become their Corolla and RAV4 for them. Great for volume, but they're racing to the bottom for pricing as others have vehicles to fit in the segment and class.
