Chevy Corvette Sales Slip 10 Percent During Q1 2023

Chevy Corvette sales decreased in the United States but increased in Canada and Mexico during the first quarter of 2023. In addition, the sports car recorded a handful of deliveries in Brazil.

Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)

Chevy Corvette sales remained at the top of its segment during the first quarter of 2023 when ranked by sales volume, as it has for over a dozen years now since we started tracking Corvette sales. More accurately, the Corvette continued to dominate its space despite the 10 percent slip in sales volume to 7,904 units. Porsche’s two entries placed second and third – the 911 (née Carrera/Targa) with a nine percent bump in sales to 2,324 units, less than a third of the Corvette’s deliveries, and 718 (née Cayman/Boxster) with a 44 percent swell to 1,124 units. The two Mercedes-Benz two models followed in fourth and fifth – the recently-overhauled AMG SL-Class with 918 deliveries and the AMG GT with a 32 percent slide to 639 units. Those five models from the three marques represented the majority of sales in the premium sports car segment, since the remaining half of the field accounted for just over 1K deliveries combined.

As we’ve noted in the past, many of the segment contenders cost significantly more than Chevy’s mid-engine sports car and, as a result, these higher-priced rivals typically see lower sales volumes. But that price difference is shrinking, especially when we consider that pricing for the new track-focused 2023 Chevy Corvette Z06 starts at over $100K.

The Corvette posted a commanding 57 percent segment share, though that figure fell seven percentage points. The 911 held a 17 percent segment share, up two percentage points year-over-year, while the 718 posted an eight percent share, also up two percentage points. As in prior quarters, the 911 was the only model other than the Corvette to post a segment share in the double digits. The AMG SL-Class earned a seven percent share while AMG GT posted a five percent share, down two percentage points. The rest of the field earned an eight percent share combined.

Combining Porsche’s two entries, the 911 and 718 lines, gave the German automaker a 25 percent segment share with 3,448 sales, still not even close to the Corvette.

As has been the case before, the Corvette along with models from Porsche and Mercedes-Benz make up the majority of the segment sales, seeing a combined 92 percent share.

The premium sports car segment grew two percent to 13,980 units in Q1 2023, meaning that Corvette sales underperformed the segment average.

The GM Authority Take

The C8 Corvette continues to command its segment as the mid-engine Vette enters its fourth model year even though sales slipped during the first quarter of 2023. That is a result of GM simply not being able to build the popular performance sports car fast enough to meet demand.

Production of the 2023 Chevy Corvette has been heavily constrained due to unspecified parts shortages, with assembly halted as recently as last October, and again during the week of February 20th as well as March 20th, after resuming just weeks before. Production of the 2024 Chevy Corvette will kick off on September 5th.

GM has continually struggled with being able to build enough of its popular mid-engine performance sports car fast enough even as it keeps offering an increasing amount of demand-driving variants. The automaker already dominates its segment in the U.S., and could do that across the globe with enough inventory. Even after seven decades, “America’s sports car” is really taking off.

About Corvette

The 2023 Chevy Corvette Stingray arrives as the fourth model year of the eighth-generation sports car, introducing only a few small changes and updates as compared to the 2022 Chevy Corvette. Power in the 2023 Corvette Stingray comes from the naturally aspirated 6.2L V8 LT2 gasoline engine.

The biggest news for the 2023 model year is the debut of the track-focused 2023 Chevy Corvette Z06 with a long list of changes and improvements over the Stingray. Chief among them is the new race-bred, naturally aspirated, dual-overhead cam, flat-plane crank 5.5L V8 LT6 gasoline engine. The 2023 Corvette Z06 also arrives with the new 70th Anniversary Edition package, which is also available for the Stingray.

Both the Stingray and Z06 are available as either a hardtop coupe (with a manually-removable roof panel) or as a hardtop convertible.

Looking past North America, Chevy designed the new C8 to be the first ever Vette to be produced from the factory in right-hand layout.

At the beginning of the year, GM debuted the first-ever 2024 Chevy Corvette E-Ray, which mates the naturally aspirated LT2 from the C8 Stingray with an electric motor at the front. The E-Ray is also the first-ever production Corvette equipped with front-wheel drive, enabling its all-wheel-drive setup.

  1. I’d like to see these numbers multiplied by their estimated selling prices in order to get an idea of how much $$ each car is bringing in to their brand.

  2. I wonder what the numbers would look like if Chevy actually built Z06’s to meet actual demand rather than some arbitrary percentage.

  3. Out of the 7904 total production for Q1, how many were the Z06’s? Surely that number is available???

  4. This article is not correct. Out of over 3000 chevy dealers that sell Corvettes have a waiting list on C8 that is long.
The sales of a C8 have not declined! Production Has Declined!
If they would build the amount forecasted in 2019 which I believe it was 30,000 a year, there wouybe a lot more sales.
There is only one plant that builds C8 which is in Bowling Green Kentucky.
So if sales in Canada and Mexico have gone up it’s only because they built more for them and less for the US.
I have over 150 on the C8 list snd over 100 on the Z06 list plus another 100 for the EV and if they ever make the adoro!

  5. Here’s an alternative article title that would work: “Data shows that the C8 Corvette is generally successful despite repeated failures in several areas by GM, an overall poor customer buying experience, and having dealers that are among the worst of all makes”
