The 2024 Made in America Auto Index from the Kogod School of Business is out, and General Motors was toward the top of the most American manufacturers. The Chevy Corvette, long dubbed “America’s Sports Car,” ranked 12th on the list.
The Kogod School of Business determines just how American a given model is based on the sourcing of its parts. This information comes from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The American Automotive Labeling Act of 1994 (AALA) states that all cars sold in the U.S. market must report and display on the car the sourcing of exclusive U.S./Canadian content, the location of assembly, and where the engine and transmission are sourced.
Tesla has been dominating this list for a while, and that domination continues in 2024. The top three models on the list are all Teslas; Model 3 Performance is number one, Model Y and Model Y Long Range are tied for number two, and the controversial Cybertruck ranks number three. The Model S and Model X are tied with the automatic variants of the Ford Mustang GT for fourth place.
The Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon, the highest-ranked GM models, are in a surprising tie for seventh place with the Volkswagen ID.4 electric crossover. The VW shot up in the rankings because the USDM model is now built in Tennessee rather than Germany.
For the Chevy Corvette, the track-ready Z06 is the most American variant, in 12th place, and the Corvette Stingray is number 14, tied with the Tesla Model 3 RWD. In between them, several Honda and Acura models and the Lexus TX 350 crossover are tied for 13th place. Apparently, the E-Ray is still too new to appear on the list, so we’ll watch for it on the 2025 list.
This was a pretty big drop in the rankings for the Corvette Stingray compared to the last two years. The Mustang GT and Corvette Stingray tied for number seven on the 2023 list, and the Stingray was up at number three in the 2022 rankings. Its percentage of U.S./Canadian content has actually gone up since then, but more cars have gotten more American, bumping the Corvette down in the rankings.
GM models a little further down on the list include Cadillac sedans and crossovers and a handful of recently discontinued models like the Chevy Camaro, Chevy Malibu, and Cadillac XT4. The T1-based full-size SUVs like the Chevy Tahoe, GMC Yukon, and Cadillac Escalade also performed pretty well. Buick is the least American of GM’s four North American retail brands because the Enclave is the only one built in the States.

Why do you guys never provide a link to the actual rankings? Very unprofessional
The Corvette will and has always been the #1 American sports car! There is no competition out there! The mustang is not a sports car it a 4 seater pony car!! Also the corvette has the highest resale of any regular production car foreign or domestic!!! European cars are the worst on depreciation and their owners have to never put miles on their vehicles because they are expensive to repair and with more than 10,000 miles nobody wants them!! They are literally losing $200,000 or more if they drive them!! Lol 😝!!! I have owned Corvettes since high school in the 80’s and never lost a dime on mine!!!
You can praise the Corvette without putting the other sports car down especially the Mustang, another great American sports car. It is a strong competition out there and it generates progress.
And you should not worry about how other people are spending their money on sports cars.
I find it interesting that the Kogod School of Business located in the Washingto DC, a liberal bastion, selected Tesla for the top three.
