Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)
Chevy Corvette sales during the first quarter of 2022 kept “America’s sports car” decisively atop the podium with a 33 percent increase in sales to 8,811 units. In fact, the Corvette sold over 4,000 units more than all the other segment contenders combined. The Porsche 911 (née Carrera/Targa) took second place with a 24 percent decline in sales to 2,123 units, while the Mercedes-Benz AMG GT moved up to third place with a 22 percent decline in sales to 942 units. The Porsche 718 (née Cayman/Boxster) fell to fourth place with a 48 percent decline in sales to 782 units. The Audi R8 (see running Audi R8 sales) followed in fifth place with a 54 percent decline in sales to just 68 units while the Nissan GT-R moved 50 units. The rest of the field moved less than 50 units.
However, as we often note, most other segment contenders in this segment cost significantly more than Chevy’s mid-engine sports car and, as a result, these higher-priced rivals typically see lower sales volumes.

Mercedes-Benz’s two entries, the AMG GT and SL-Class, saw combined sales drop 38 percent to 944 units. The SL-Class did not help the performance, moving just two units as the automaker is in the process of changing over to the next-generation SL-Class roadster, set to go sale next quarter.
The premium sports car segment grew nearly two percent to 12,864 units in Q1 2022, meaning that Corvette sales substantially outperformed the segment average.
The GM Authority Take
The Corvette C8 continues to decimate its segment as the mid-engine Vette enters its fourth model year. Yet, it would probably obliterate rivals further if The General could start building the sports car fast enough to meet demand. Incidentally, this has been the case since the 2020 model year introduction of the C8. In spite of that, the Corvette has remained at the top of its segment, with the 2022 Chevy Corvette being ranked among the top ten fastest-selling vehicles in January 2022.
To make things even better, the 2023 Chevy Corvette is on its way. Order books for the 2023 Corvette Stingray opened up on March 24th and And the 2023 Corvette Z06 is still coming later this year, with order books for the track-focused variant set to open this spring.
Both the 2023 Chevy Corvette Stingray and the new 2023 Chevy Corvette Z06 will be available as either a hardtop coupe (with a manually-removable roof panel) or as a hardtop convertible.
The heart of the exciting new Z06 is the naturally aspirated 5.5L V8 LT6 gasoline engine, which is the highest-horsepower atmospheric V8 ever fitted to a production vehicle. It produces 670 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque, with redline set for the flat-plane crankshaft V8 at a screaming 8,600 rpm. Output is routed to the rear wheels through Tremec’s eight-speed dual-clutch transmission.
Later this year, Chevy will also introduce the Corvette 70th anniversary edition to celebrate seven decades of Corvette, available on both the Stingray and Z06 models. Other C8 models still on the way include the Corvette C8 E-Ray (indirectly replacing the initially planned Corvette C8 Grand Sport), Corvette C8 ZR1, and Corvette C8 Zora.
Looking past North America, Chevy designed the new C8 to be the first ever Vette to be produced from the factory in right-hand layout, with models specced for Europe, Japan, Australia and New Zealand. The C8 will also be sold in China, as GM establishes a new imported vehicle business there to sell Corvettes, among other performance cars and trucks.
The future burns brighter and brighter for the Corvette as Chevy releases more exciting models that launch in more global markets. Now, The General needs to continue overcoming parts shortages to keep production steady to build enough of its mid-engine success story to meet record demand.

Yeah, yeah, meanwhile Chevy gets obliterated in other segments that makes more money. Is it that hard to make a profitable sedan?, A practical performance vehicle? or keep CUV production up?.
LOL? GM dominates the large SUV sector, the most profitable one, and it’s not even close. They also continue to hold strong market share of the 2nd most profitable segment, pickup trucks, between Chevy and GMC, and that is only set to grow with the refreshed model hitting the streets.
My lifelong Chevy truck driving friends all switched to Ford . The explanation was that the dealers were too difficult and the products were not appealing. This was all pre-pandemic. When I go to buy a truck, it will be a Raptor. But for now my Z71 Suburban from 2002 runs fine.
Why are y’all on a GM site reading an article about a C8 just to complain about GM not building in the lower margin Sedan market? And please, dealers are dealers, your friend’s personal experiences are anecdotal, there’s no significant difference in how Ford or GM instructs their dealers to behave. There’s a whole other group of friends switching from Ford to Chevy for the same reasons right now. Why? People always think the grass is greener on the other side, neither group is right.
John I too am amazed at how many folks are reading a GM site who complain about all thing GM. I don’t think it’s been stated clear enough for some people that this is a site with GM information.
Read again, note what I didn’t mention. Why be a one trick pony with primarily selling trucks?.
He says while commenting on an article about a company that builds America’s premier sports car (and truthfully it’s only mass-market sports car) while simultaneously holding significant market share in everything from large to small SUV’s and pickups, and investing billions to beat out Ford and particularly RAM in the inevitable government-spurred switch to EV’s. Take the blinders off friend.
I’m not your friend, also I care less about some 2 seat D’rocket that I have no use for, it didn’t stop GM from the BK, so much for profit. As said where’s something that I can use outside of a truck from GM?.
SUVs are the biggest money makers and GM leads them all with the Tahoe, Yukon and Escalade, check the stats.
Corvettes would be so much better if only Chevy built a good dump truck.
I’ve got a Z51 in Amplify Orange scheduled to be built the week of 4/18! I went on the wait list on June 23, 2021.
OMG, can you imagine how their sales would be if they could actually run a full production line?
Supply should match with demand equally. It is a good problem to have with Corvette currently since many people are waiting to order one, not necessarily for the buyer of course. If supply outweighs the demand, you will see incentives and discounts on America’s favorite sports car and no one will favor the C8 any longer if people grow tired of the C8. So, for right now the sales volume is where it is at for the time being with people paying at and above MSRP.
Here is an automobile that GM can very easily get another $10,000 MSRP, and sell all that they can produce. GM will squeeze every dollar out of their trucks buyers and allow the purchasers of these Corvettes to get away with paying a much lower price
Shush.
I have been driving my C8 for a year now. Every minute and every mile brings a smile .
The base model was already doing a number on this market when the z06 started killing the top performance holdouts. Porsche is the only remaining relevant competitor but if it doesn’t up its game, the hybrid and Zora will make it look like Audi or Nissan.
Without question, the C8 is a winner.
Can someone explain what the point of sales comparisons are when all of these cars sell what they can make. I could not buy any of these cars without a very long wait. Sales of all of these cars are simply limited by production.
Exactly. NONE of these sales comparisons mentions MSRP or production volume. It’s like comparing sales of $90K double wide mobile homes vs $3 million mansions. Not saying the Corvette isn’t worth the money but unless you consider all factors you can’t compare Vette sales to others in this segment
Not exactly true. Production over time adjusts to match sales. The 718 dropped 50% from last year, so there is plenty of capacity if it hasn’t already been cut back. Factories are very interested in sales numbers.
The point of comparisons for consumers is to see which cars are popular, partly to see if what you want might be better/worse than something else but also to see whether it will even be around next year. If you are interested in aftermarket parts there will be more available for more popular cars. If you want something no one else has you might be happy your car has a miniscule market share.
