2022 Mercedes-AMG SL Debuts, Rivals C8 Corvette

Mercedes-Benz has unveiled the new 2022 Mercedes-AMG SL roadster, the seventh generation for the performance luxury drop-top. When it goes on sale next year, the 2022 Mercedes-AMG SL will go up against the Chevy Corvette C8.

The heart of the new 2022 Mercedes-AMG SL is an AMG-built biturbo 4.0L V8. The ‘eight will be available in two power levels at launch, with base SL 55 models producing 469 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque, sending the roadster to 60 mph in 3.8 seconds. The new SL will also be offered with 577 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque in the SL 63 trim, dropping the 0-to-60 mph time to 3.5 seconds. A nine-speed automatic transmission handles the cog swaps.

Under the skin is a new lightweight aluminum composite structure with enhanced torsional rigidity. The 2022 Mercedes-AMG SL will also introduce all-wheel drive for the first time, while also offering AMG Active Ride Control suspension with active anti-roll stabilization, rear axle steering, and optional AMG high-performance ceramic brakes.

The exterior styling of the 2022 Mercedes-AMG SL continues the nameplate’s traditional features, such as an extended hoodline, short overhangs, and cab-back proportions in the profile. The roof incorporates a soft top for reduced weight compared to a convertible hard top configuration. The soft top takes 15 seconds to open or close, and can be operated at speeds up to 37 mph.

Up front is an AMG-specific radiator treatment, plus LED headlights. LED taillights are used in back. The exterior design is now more streamlined, with a Cd of 0.31, while customers can opt into the AMG Aerodynamics package for greater handling at speed. Wheel sizing ranges between 20 and 21 inches in diameter.

The cabin space features a 2+2 seating arrangement, as well as standard AMG sports seats with Merc’s Airscarf neck heater comfort feature. AMG Performance seats are optional.

The 2022 Mercedes-AMG SL will go on sale next summer. Pricing is estimated to start at roughly $100,000.

  1. The SL is a magnificent car as always but gm has no competition for it. The Corvette is a wholly different product. Cadillac tried to compete with the SL with their Allante’ and XLR but both had significant shortcomings and failed in the marketplace. Can’t we just say here that Mercedes is launching a new SL without trying to claim there’s some gm rival when everybody knows there isn’t. There’s always a headline like “Honda launches new Odyssey van, rival to the Chevrolet Express” and truthfully the gm product is often not even close to being on par with the product being launched.

    1. On looks alone the Mercedes Benz wins it’s not trying to be something it’s not hopefully Cadillac will try a 3rd time and get it right, it’s the only American competition the imports have Lincoln don’t build Luxury Automobiles any more

  3. The new Mercedes AMG SL is an E-Class 2 + 2 Coupe with AMG GT front and Porsche 911 rear which is sold at a high price.

My outlook is that Cadillac will soon build a high-quality opponent for this AMG SL, but already as a BEV with 4WD. The Cadillac Blackwing models are the reference for the next Cadillac BEV Sport Cabrio. When it comes to marketing, GM and Cadillac should keep in mind that the customer decides which product he wants and not the marketing and finance department.
Order to GM: The Next Cadillac XLR BEV successor would have been decided and development should start on November 1st, 2021. SoP should be done by MJ2025.

    1. Give up on the two time loser Cadillac motor division. They can’t get Cadillac right let alone try to compete with a competent manufacturer.

  4. If cost didn’t matter I would still go with my C8, the C8 still looks so much better.
Compare service and maintenance cost with a Mercedes to GM Corvettes.

  7. Mercedes has lost its way. Torn between aping Porsche and BMW, their styling embodies the worst of both. It actually looks svelter than a current 911 which says more about how whale-like and ungainly the Porsche has become than how successful current Mercedes styling is.

There is nothing here that a C8 owner could covet and the C8’s a lot cheaper and more distinctive to boot.

  8. Mercedes repair/maintenance costs are extremely high and you sure as heck can’t work on their cars – period! Looks wise, It really hasn’t changed much .

  9. I’ve owned several Vettes as well as SL’s. They shouldn’t be compared. The new mid engine C8 is a reliable sports car with many new features not available on the Mercedes. It’s a faster sports car and the SL is more of a touring car. My Sl’s were very expensive to maintain unlike the Chevy. Also my convertible C8 is a hardtop which I prefer over the rag top and it only cost $82k with a lot of options. I’ve driven it for a year without a single problem.

  10. LOL… any Mercedes mechanics on this forum? My friend has been for 17 years and my uncle does side work at his house for Mercedes, Volkswagen, and Porsche for 25 years. More Volkswagen since they break when they hit a rough road. What he says since he works on them… What both have in common, never own one unless you can afford the high $$$$$$ maintenance. Excluding the interior, the typical replaceable items wear just as fast as a Chevy Impala but cost 2-4 times as higher. They wear just like any other car if daily driven and used as the grocery getter. They make sooo much money on the side or at the dealers. If an issue comes up and it’s suspect, replace it and continue to replace so there are no issues, regardless of cost, after all, you bought a Mercedes or Porsche, buyers expect it. One hidden issue regarding Mercedes, the seals or gaskets like to leak and that is a money maker for a mechanic.

As for a comparison, two totally different machines and two totally different purposes. Mercedes is NOT coming after the Corvette or going after the SL.

I don’t see why folks are getting wrapped around the Euro axle…lol

  11. MORE THAN ONE OF MY FRIENDS HAVE OWNED MERCEDES, BUT NOT ANYMORE.
THEY SAID THEIR HAPPIEST DAYS WERE THE DAY THEY BOUGHT IT, AND THE DAY THEY SOLD IT.

    THE C8 Z51 WILL DO 0 TO 60 IN 2.8 SECONDS.
    CADILLAC CT5 -V BLACKWING 0 TO 60 IN 3.7 SECONDS, WITH 10 SPEED AUTO.

    THIS IS A DUMB COMPARISON

  12. What is the point having second row seats? By the looks of the car, they are useless in this new SL.

Read some piece of the SL from one of the sources that the market had aging buyers and they had to make it more appealing for one of the reasons for being AMG only. This car should look great as a two seater only but now it is trying to be a 911 with rear useless, small seats.

Also, the C8 will easily whoops this car’s ass so no comparison. Back then, I would not consider the Corvette from previous generations as luxury sport which the C8 is currently now more so with its refinement, sophistication & technology.

  13. Just to be clear, this isn’t a mercedes gt amg replacement, this is another coupe. This sl coupe is made to compete with cars like the bmw 8 series, while the current gt amg is ment to compete with high performance cars like the Porsche 911. This isn’t a replacement for a amg gt and the c8 corvette is not a direct competitor to the sl coupe.
