For the sake of presenting a more complete picture of the competitive landscape, we’re providing sales figures for the Lexus RX below. Though the RX slots into the luxury utility D-segment, competing with the Cadillac XT5, the vehicle is also offered as a three-row model called RXL, which competes with three-row luxury models mentioned above.

Since Lexus does not break out sales of the two-row RX from the three-row RXL, not all RX sales can be applied to the premium three-row CUV segment. A more appropriate comparison would be to bundle Cadillac XT5 and XT6 sales. We’ve also included the Lincoln Nautilus and Aviator, which are direct rivals to Cadillac’s two models, respectively, and added the GX to join the RX in this list.

Combining sales of the Cadillac XT5 and XT6 results in 12,273 units, which is less than half of RX sales alone. As such, Lexus dominates this comparative set, followed by Cadillac, and then Lincoln.

The luxury E utility segment grew 20 percent to 101,081 units in Q3 2022, meaning XT6 sales underperformed the segment average.

The GM Authority Take

Cadillac XT6 sales placed the luxury marque’s three-row crossover within about 700 units of mid-pack among 14 entries. Combining sales of the Cadillac XT6 and the Buick Enclave puts GM in third place and within about 900 units of second. While the BMW X5 continues to command the top spot, GM’s offerings together made a solid showing in the competitive large luxury three-row crossover segment.

On a related note, many regarded the Lincoln Aviator as a much better product than the Cadillac XT6 when both models launched in 2019, and consequently thought the Aviator would obliterate the XT6 in terms of not only product attributes but also sales volume. Yet, three years into both models’ lifespans, sales of the two remain neck-in-neck overall. During this quarter, the Aviator moved 5,746 units to the XT6’s 5,013, while a year ago it was 3,618 to 4,581, respectively.

In fact, it’s highly likely that XT6 sales continue to be affected by idled production at the GM Spring Hill plant in Tennessee for the better part of the 2021 calendar year due to supply constraints, including but not limited to the ongoing global semiconductor microchip shortage. Production of the XT6 resumed in full on December 6th, 2021. Production of the 2023 Cadillac XT6 began on June 10th, 2022.

The 2020 Cadillac XT6 was the first model year for the all-new, three-row luxury midsize crossover utility vehicle (CUV) from the automaker. Two years later, the 2022 Cadillac XT6 can now be ordered with GM’s Super Cruise semi-autonomous hands-free driving system. The 2022 XT6 also features more standard advanced safety features along with several other changes.

The 2023 Cadillac XT6 represents the fourth model year of the first-generation crossover, bringing only a few small updates and changes over the preceding 2022 model year, including several minor package-related changes.

As a reminder, the Cadillac XT6 crossover rides on the GM C1 platform and is offered with two engine options, starting with the turbocharged 2.0L I4 LSY gasoline engine, rated at 235 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. This engine is standard and only available on the base Luxury trim level. Meanwhile, the naturally aspirated 3.6L V6 LGX gasoline engine, rated at 310 horsepower and 271 pound-feet of torque, is standard on the higher end Premium Luxury and Sport trims. Output is routed through the GM nine-speed automatic transmission with front-wheel drive standard, and all-wheel drive available as an extra-cost option on Luxury and Premium Luxury, while being standard on Sport.

Keeping production humming is key to the XT6 not only beating the Aviator but placing more favorably against popular rivals that aren’t sitting still in the luxury E-segment utility segment. Combined with the Enclave, GM is making a run to the top.

  1. I know GM had those investor meetings, we now know the next XT5 will be exclusive to China what about the XT6? I’m seeing more and more XT6’s on the road, it really just needs a a new cockpit reminiscent of the Escalade and Lyriq and the updared 2024 XT4. A turbo option would also be a welcome addition. I can’t believe they don’t see its too soon to go all Electric right now. Their lineup should still be three ICE crossovers with the CT sedans, the Escalade and then the EV’s. Its amazing how hybrids were never an option.
