For the sake of reference, we’re providing sales figures for the Lexus RX below. The vehicle is now offered in both two- and three-row versions, the latter of which competes in the same general space as the aforementioned three-row models. Since Lexus does not break out sales of the two-row RX from the three-row RXL, not all RX sales can be applied to the premium three-row CUV segment. Instead, a more apt comparison would be to compare RX family sales to combined sales of the Cadillac XT5, Cadillac XT6, and Buick Enclave.

Doing so shows that the Lexus RX family accounted for 26,530 deliveries during the quarter while GM’s three entries saw a cumulative 20,177 sales.

The premium three-row crossover segment grew eight percent to 45,017 units in Q3 2022, meaning Enclave sales underperformed the segment average.

The GM Authority Take

Buick Enclave sales performance during the third quarter of 2022 placed the model solidly in third place in its segment while knocking on second’s door. Furthermore, combined sales of GM’s two entries, the Buick Enclave and Cadillac XT6, placed the automaker squarely at the top.

Production interruptions in the past at the GM Lansing Delta Township plant in Michigan have impacted Enclave inventory and some issues remain such as certain 2023 Buick Enclave units being built without underhood insulators due to material shortages. Regardless, sales of the Enclave have been consistent for the past year, with the premium full-size crossover continuing to offer a solid value proposition for buyers.

In fact, the 2018 Buick Enclave was named, along with its platform mate, the 2020 Chevy Traverse, as one of the best certified pre-owned three-row crossovers available for under $30,000 by Kelley Blue Book. Additionally, Consumer Reports recognized the 2021 Buick Enclave as one of the best luxury SUVs to buy right now. However, the publication just two months later dropped the 2022 Buick Enclave from its list of recommended vehicles due to reported reliability issues.

The refreshed 2022 Buick Enclave introduced new features and options to the nameplate such as sharper exterior styling, slight revisions to the interior, additional safety tech, and exclusive equipment for the Avenir trim level, among other changes and updates. Also, the 2022 model dropped the base Preferred trim level, with the Essence now being the entry-level trim.

The 2023 Buick Enclave arrives as the sixth model year of the second-generation crossover with minimal changes. As a reminder, the Enclave rides on the GM C1 platform and offers just one powerplant option, namely the naturally aspirated 3.6L V6 LFY gasoline. Peak output is rated at 310 horsepower at 6,600 rpm and 266 pound-feet of torque at 2,800 rpm, all of which is directed through the GM nine-speed automatic transmission as standard. Front-wheel drive is also standard and all-wheel drive is optional.

Production of the 2023 Buick Enclave kicked off at the GM Lansing Delta Township plant on June 11th, 2022.

2025 Buick Electra EV crossover prototype

GM, along with the auto industry at large, is continuing to work on supply chain issues and related production interruptions in order boost sales for the Enclave and the rest of its lineup, while introducing new and updated models. That includes Buick’s plans to launch its first electric vehicle in 2024 and go full EV by 2030. We expect the EV model rollout to begin with the recently-leaked Electra E5 EV followed by an upcoming compact model.

All future Buick electric vehicles will like carry names like “Electra E1” through “Electra E9,” as GM recently filed to trademark. There is no word yet from Buick on plans for an all-electric replacement for the Enclave, its largest crossover, but the premium brand is just getting started in the EV space, so stay tuned.

  1. Chevrolet Malibu sales for YTD is close to the total of the top three SUV’s on the list above. Tell me again why they say sedans are terrible sellers? Now just imagine if GM/Chevrolet actually advertised the Malibu! With a little advertising and promotion, I bet the Malibu would outsell the entire list.

    1. Dan B – sometimes your comments are well thought out and others are simply ridiculous. This is one of those ridiculous comments.

Forget about quantity of units. Look at profit per unit! While we don’t know what type of profitability the Malibu generates per unit, it’s no where close to what those premium/luxury CUVs generate in profit for their manufactures. Heck, those CUVs probably generate 10-20 times more profit per unit than a Malibu. Not too difficult to understand why the Malibu doesn’t get as much attention as the CUVs you compare it to.

      1. GMC Fan: You are correct about the profits being higher on those SUV’s, but not all of them. What’s more, you are not taking into account the lost sales and repeat/referral sales that are lost. In other words, you are looking at it correctly, but in a very short-sighted way. GM is missing the boat on this (and Ford even more) when they give a big middle finger to sedan buyers.

If they build a great product (which I think you and I both feel they do), then getting someone into a Spark or Cruze or Malibu or CT4 or CT5 or Regal or Verano……………………………..gives GM a much higher probability of getting that same customer into another vehicle (sedan, SUV or truck) down the road. There’s also the referral aspect too. How do you think Toyota sells so many vehicles? We all know it’s not because they are so much better. It’s because Toyota got people into their vehicles years ago and have kept them there no matter what. After all, the profit in a 4Runner is probably 3x that of a Corolla, correct?

GM is missing the boat in a huge way here and you know that.

      2. Profit means nothing if vehicles don’t sell.

        1. Exactly. If you are saying what I think you are, and if things are going the way I see them going, then all those huge trucks/SUV’s and the more expensive CUV’s will be sitting. There’s a good chance (not 100%, but a good chance) that GM and Ford will be crying because they have little to sell in a market like that. Meantime, Toyota, Honda, Kia, Hyundai and Nissan will be banking once again because of this. Shame on GM and Ford.

  2. They are terrible retail sellers. 79,799 Malibu vs. 325,565 Equinox/Traverse/Blazer/Trailblazer sales. Most of those Malibu sales were probably to fleets trying to replenish their rentals in the wake of the past couple of years.

    1. Arcee: Tell me again why you think they are terrible retail sellers. They don’t advertise it. They don’t promote it. And where are you getting your breakdown of “retail” sales vs what? Yet they promote the living heck out of the CUV/SUV’s. And this is the result?

And how did you jump from this article and list above that I referenced to a completely different set of SUV’s? I fully understand that the Malibu doesn’t “compete” in this segment (above). That’s not my point. The point is that they have sales numbers of a car that many don’t even know exists, that isn’t promoted, that isn’t advertised and it’s still selling as well as the TOP THREE SUV’s above combined.

      Explain that.

  3. With production interruptions and material shortages, GM should be surprised and pleased with the Buick Enclave’s good sales.
