For the sake of reference, we’re providing sales figures for the Lexus RX below. The vehicle is now offered in both two- and three-row versions, the latter of which competes in the same general space as the aforementioned three-row models. Since Lexus does not break out sales of the two-row RX from the three-row RXL, not all RX sales can be applied to the premium three-row CUV segment. Instead, a more apt comparison would be to compare RX family sales to combined sales of the Cadillac XT5, Cadillac XT6, and Buick Enclave.

Doing so shows that the Lexus RX family accounted for 26,974 deliveries during the quarter while GM’s three entries saw a cumulative 20,125 sales.

The premium three-row crossover segment contracted 31 percent to 48,268 units in Q2 2022, meaning Enclave sales significantly underperformed the segment average.

The GM Authority Take

Buick Enclave sales performance during the second quarter of 2022 places the model in third place in its segment, slipping a spot year-over-year. But there was additional movement at the top as Volvo’s entry moved ahead of Acura’s. However, the good news is that combined sales of GM’s two entries, the Buick Enclave and Cadillac XT6, places the automaker squarely at the top by over 3K deliveries.

Less than satisfactory sales of the Tri-Shield brand’s premium full-size crossover has been the direct result of a lack of inventory stemming from production interruptions at the GM Lansing Delta Township plant in Michigan where the Enclave is assembled. This, in turn, is due to various supply related factors, including but not limited to the ongoing global semiconductor microchip shortage.

Specifically, the plant was idled for several weeks in 2021 because GM was diverting chips to more lucrative vehicle lines, such as full-size trucks and SUVs. Luckily, Enclave production finally restarted the week of October 4th, 2021. However, that wasn’t fast enough to fill dealer inventories to optimal levels for a more successful showing. In addition, a few new production issues stemming from the microchip shortage have recently cropped up to impact several Buick models. Narrowing those issues down to the 2022 Buick Enclave, GM finally resolved the unavailability of heated rear seat at the end of February, only to then face constraints leading to models being built without ventilated seat blower motors in April.

To address this head-on GM recently announced that it will have its own family of microchips locked in by 2025, a move that is expected to offset future chip-related production delays.

For the 2022 model year, the Buick Enclave received a refresh that brought about changes to the exterior and interior, plus additional safety tech and exclusive equipment for the range-topping Avenir trim level. On the outside, the refreshed 2022 Buick Enclave features updated front and rear fascias for a more modern appearance. However, Consumer Reports dropped the 2022 Buick Enclave from its list of recommended vehicles due to reported reliability issues. This was less than two months after the publication recognized the 2021 Buick Enclave as one of the best luxury SUVs to buy right now.

As with so many of GM’s other models across its various brands, The General’s resolve to allay production issues stemming from supply chain constraints will be key to strengthening sales. That includes those of the Enclave as the vehicle continues to enjoy high levels of interest and demand. The automaker producing its own chips in the future is a step in the right direction.

  1. Good job, Buick – given the lack of inventory. Automotive News reports that the Enclave will be “redesigned” for 2024. I imagine it will get the “new face” of Buick and the new logo.
