GM Canada sales decreased 35.5 percent to 50,074 units during the second quarter of 2020, impacted by the outbreak of the COVID-19 virus. Sales declined at all four of the company’s brands, including Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, and GMC.
GM Canada Sales Notes – Q2 2020
While the industry experienced significant declines due to the coronavirus pandemic, GM Canada full-size pickup truck sales remained resilient, retail sales showed some early signs of recovery, and the company gained market share during the second quarter.
“We are working hard to emerge from the unprecedented negative impacts of COVID-19 on the Canadian marketplace, and GM Canada is starting to see recovery in retail sales,” said Sandor Piszar, vice president, sales, service and marketing, GM Canada. “Our dealers across the country have quickly adapted to using new enhanced cleaning protocols for vehicle shopping and delivery through the launch of our “CLEAN” dealership initiative, and with our strong lineup of vehicles, we’re ready to build success in the second half of 2020,” he added.
Despite the current pandemic, the company’s most recent crossover launches continued their momentum in the second quarter. Since the Chevrolet Blazer launched in January of 2019, sales have been steadily increasing. Additionally, the all-new Chevrolet Trailblazer and Buick Encore GX have been performing well in a highly-competitive segment.
Next to launch will be GM’s portfolio of full-size SUVs, including the overhauled 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe, 2021 Suburban, 2021 GMC Yukon and Yukon XL, and 2021 Cadillac Escalade, which will be available with enhanced Super Cruise.

When GM Corporation virtually closed down Oshawa Assembly Plant ,it indicated to too many Canadians that Our $10B loan in 2008-9 to save GM From bankruptcy meant nothing to Head Office in Detroit ,these figure are indicative of backlash and Covid-19 toward the lack of loyalty to this award winning plant and that you should attempt to build where you sell ,the on shore and imports are eating GM’s lunch in Canada just as predicted and there is no turn around strategy to gain buyer support other than ongoing rebates that every company is offering with poor sales !

If Canadian buyers really cared about Oshawa Assembly, they would have bought more Impalas instead of Camrys.
Wait- Toyota and Honda actually have very large assembly facilities in Ontario and they advertise and model change frequently to get buyer excitement more than poor old Impala sitting on the dealer lots along side almost new twin size Malibu’s at a better price ,but even they will be gone soon along with the Regal – GM SUV’s, CUV’s or EV’s aren’t the answer to all buyer needs here or the US while other manufacturers are committed to a full range of salable vehicles !
What gives? I have one and it’s a fine product.
These numbers aren’t pretty, but some context helps. Virtually every other company was down 40+ percent in the same quarter in Canada and GM gained significant market share.
I will always believe you remove Canadian Manufacturing from Canada in 1964 to 2019 you are getting rid of buyers who have family buyers too. Then you remove the Federal Regestration of the Canadian Corporation in 2019 to signify it is now American Owned. The thought you do not build them here employing buyers of your product, you do not see the big picture.
