The GM Authority Take

Chevrolet Brazil sales decreased significantly during June – the third full month that the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted the Brazilian market. In fact, last month’s decline becomes the fourth consecutive decline in Chevrolet sales in the. The last time Chevy saw sales grow in the Brazilian market was in February, when it saw a 1 percent increase in sales. Even so, June shows a substantial recovery compared to the sales volume and rate of change posted in April (down 74 percent to 10,008 units) as well as in May (down 76 percent to 9,968 units).

Even more noteworthy is that, for the first time in five years, Chevrolet lost its best-seller position in Brazil. The Bow Tie brand was outsold by Volkswagen in June, when the German automaker showed a faster recovery than the rest of its rivals and sold 21,877 vehicles in the South American country. It should be noted that Chevrolet remains the best-selling auto brand for the first six months of the year.

Most Chevrolet models posted a negative sales performance in June on a year-over-year basis, including the brand’s perennial best-seller, the Chevrolet Onix. However, three vehicles – Camaro, Equinox, and Tracker – posted noteworthy sales growth last month.

2020 Chevrolet Equinox

The most impressive and significant increase is that of the new Tracker subcompact crossover, which almost quadrupled the sales figure posted in June 2019. Despite the excellent result, the 2021 Tracker was not Brazil’s best-selling utility this time around. Instead, it landed in third place, behind the Volkswagen T-Cross and the Jeep Renegade.

We posit that the market instability caused by the COVID-19 pandemic is causing these rather unusual results, and expect for Chevrolet to regain its best-selling position once the impact of the virus subsides.
