The GM Authority Take

After registering noteworthy increases during the months of March and April, during the peak of the COVID-19 outbreak, Chevrolet Korea sales decreased significantly in May. The bowtie brand lost momentum last month in South Korea due to lower unit availability of the all-new Chevrolet Trailblazer, the primary vehicle responsible for the consecutive increases during the aforementioned two months. GM Korea was forced to reduce local crossover production to just seven days in May due to certain logistical problems caused by the pandemic.

These production drawbacks further limited the amount of the new Trailblazer destined for the South Korean domestic market, since the priority of the output of the GM Bupyeong plant is to supply the North American market. This situation caused the sales of the new crossover model to fall 46 percent from the 1,757 units delivered in April to 956 units delivered in May, leaving the growing demand for the vehicle in the Asian country unsatisfied.

In contrast, the Chevrolet Colorado and Chevrolet Traverse continued to improve their sales performance in South Korea throughout May. Sales of the mid-size pickup increased 21.3 percent over the month of April, while the full-size crossover increased 41.4 percent. This chain of events brought combined sales of imported Chevrolet models in the country – Bolt EV, Camaro, Colorado, Equinox and Traverse – to more than 1,000 units for the eighth consecutive month, representing about 15 percent of Chevy’s cumulative sales volume in South Korea.
