The GM Authority Take

After suffering a drastic 42.5 percent sales drop in the first quarter of 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Buick China sales saw a healthy increase during the second quarter of the year. In fact, the positive Q2 result represents the first increase in Buick sales in China in the last two years. The last gain posted by the Tri Shield brand was the 9 percent increase recorded in the first quarter of 2018. In this way, Buick has put an end to eight consecutive quarters of sales contraction in its primary market.

Buick managed to achieve its noteworthy Q2 2020 performance as a result of various factors, including the restart in production across various Chinese plants, launching refreshed versions of its popular sedans, and revamping the GL8 family – comprised of the 25S Classic, ES and Avenir range.

Although model-specific sales figures are not available, we know that the best-selling Buick models on the Chinese market are the Excelle GT sedan and the GL8 full-size MPV line.

In addition, the brand expects to continue its sales momentum in the third quarter of 2020 thanks to the launch of the new Buick Velite 7 EV and the all-new Buick Envision S.

  1. The entry of Cadillac into China harmed Buick making it appear less luxurious and more a VW rival. Glad to see numbers have increased but GM must be careful in keeping each brand unique and to do so by presenting Buick as a different less ostentatious expression of luxury on par with Audi. All Avenir, and maybe simply the entire Buick line should either be AWD or share RWD platforms with Cadillac depending of which option does better with focus groups.

Such a move would also aid Chevrolet which has an uncertain market position with poor growth not worthy of being a VW rival. Bojaun should be GM’s Chinese Plymouth but that space will belong to Chevy is change does not happen. A sexy, smart and people sized Impala to replace Malibj XL would be a great start plus offering any GMC Humvee SUV as a Chevy Humve.
