The GM Authority Take

Chevrolet Argentina sales – based on registration data – decreased dramatically in April, with the timeframe representing the first full month of the COVID-19 quarantine. While dealers in the South American country have been closed since March 19th, administrative record offices reopened on April 22nd. During the seven business days that followed, the offices have completed the registrations of vehicle sales prior to the lockdown as well as a few sales performed online. As such, the local market saw an 88 percent drop in vehicle registrations during the month, representing the lowest sales volume in the country in the last 60 years.

Despite the fact that the negative environment caused huge declines in all Bow Tie models offered in the Argentina market, the Chevrolet Onix remained the best-selling car in the country for the third consecutive month. Since the launch of the all-new, second-generation model, the Onix has increased in popularity in Argentina due to its excellent value proposition while consolidating the sales of its two body styles into a single nameplate. In contrast, the sedan variant of the first-generation Onix was sold as the Chevrolet Prisma, which was recently discontinued.
